We Were Heroes

Description
This song is set in a not so distant future, where political correctness and government
control has led to a small civil war. The uprising is put down and the reconditioned
citizens are pacified with all manner of comforts and convieniences, as long as they
follow the rules. A soldier lements the old days, saying " But we were heroes" while
watching a neighbor get beaten for a civil crime.

I had more lyrics for this one, but I've been working on it for weeks and frankly I'm
fried! There are some decent aspects to this song, but it has a few problems, and I
doubt I'll do much more with it. I had big plans to do a sort of rock opera with it,
but I'm not as excited about that anymore, sigh. Oh well.

Lyrics
I saw the thought police
coming down the street
I knew exactly what they were looking for
in 2021
they came for our guns
and so began the second civil war

two years on
the battle is done
we returned into our 'mother's loving arms
she was warm
and reasureing
all the promises
were alureing
as they were transmitted
we felt no harm
chorus
We were Heroes!
We fought against it when no one else would
We Were Heroes!
We gave our blood because we understood
that We were Heroes!

We were the Heroes...

I saw the green police
had my neighbor on his knees
looks like he forgot to recycle again
his own daughter turned him in
and as they corrected him
she said "oh Daddy, why cant you understand?"

chorus

for listening, I wanted to say a lot more in this, but when I realized it was already running over 6 mins I decided to keep it where it was. As for choosing sides, I'm always on the side of the good guys! Evil will triumph when good men do nothing.

We Were Heroes
This is great, it could have been a track off Freak Out by the Mothers. It has that haunting quality about it that much of the very very late sixties productions had.

Awesome Robby! A long wait that definitely paid off. Your production skills are great. Your vocals are really good in this one. Of course your guitar skills are fantastic. I'm going to have to listen to this again when I get home from work later. Excellent!

cool compliment, thanks. The future can indeed be very diferent from the one so many of us believe in, it aint always a big bowl of yummy ice cream and cookies. History is littered with the ruins of once great societies, we are not immune.

WOW
You put a lot of work into this one I can tell. Very large arrangement, lots of great harmonies. Right on the money. The only thing on the vocals I would suggest is not pronouncing the consonants at the end of lines for your backup vocals. Makes them much easier to sync that way. Very well done vocals though. Cool subject matter for a song too. Enjoyed it.

Thanks
Charles, You are always very helpfull with your input, I am always looking for ways to improve my vocals and that is a good tip. I can hear what you mean about pronouncing and breath pops etc. My new mission in my songs is to make the vocals better, It is an area I have problems with for sure, not to mention Volume and clarity in my mixes have been issues as well, but overall the process is really more fun than the product, huh?
Thanks for the input!

Heroes
I like long songs, as long as they're not beating on a dead horse. You pulled this off. The steady drive of it sits well, and it remains interesting throughout. The change at 2:05 was wonderful --- my favorite part, I think. Compliments to you for all the hard work, an interesting subject, good singing and playing, and for having the guts to go with a longer piece. Heroic. THX1138 is a classic. Good choice.

Great
job capturing the feel of a protest song. The Big Brother is watching theme stems from "1984." We have given up a lot of liberties but it never got as bad as that. Enjoyed the chorus very much.
It has a stage sound. I can see why it would fit a rock opera. You still can do that. You just need more songs to continue the story. Thank you.

Great
compliments from a great MJ'er,thanks Char. The term politicaly correct is directly from the Communists. How benign it sounds when used today, but it came from a far darker purpose in the past. I'm not really a conspiracy nut or anything, but I am not a blind loyalist to the Progressives nor the Neo-Cons, I'm just a patriot who smells trouble in the wind.
Thanks again!

Heroes
This does sound like a rock opera could come out of this. Very impressive... Did you burn yourself out trying to complete this too soon? It will wait for you to become inspired again. Just take some space and time from it. From my first listen I wanted to hear more lyrics.

Too soon
indeed, I worked on it off and on for weeks, mostly because I was unable to find enough time to stay with it. In the end , had I just been able to dedicate a whole weekend in the beginning, I would have finished quicker. It's hard to come and go from something with this many tracks, you lose your place and the flow isnt consistant.
I felt like I was rushing, and yet, went slowly, bad combo. I lost steam.
Thanks Connie for listening

Indeed :o)
Robby, I was replying to your description comments you posted. I think you have a good song here and you just sound so frustrated. It's just my opinion that "off and on for weeks" is "too soon" in a major endeavor such as a rock opera (which I thought this song has good potential to be)...that was meant to be a compliment. I was offering you encouragement.

We Were Heroes
I am excited about it! Sure, like you said your fried (I been there) but you have something here that's above and beyond the average song.
I think maybe you were too ambitious is some ways. Maybe if you keep the essence of it and pare it down a bit it would work better for you. Maybe try to say the same story in 4 mins.
But all n all some great playing and singing. Good job!

Over ambitious
are my two middle names, lol! I always do that though jibes, and sometimes I get so far ahead of myself that I lose sight, ya know?
You are so right, but all my Favorite music is this kind of big sounding production stuff, like Peter Gabriel, Floyd,The Who, and I
start out with a simple guitar tune and it grows into these multi track cliping mushes of sound sometimes, and when I can't figure out how to correct things, I end up walking away from it. Grrr!
Dont get me wrong though, I know a lot of this is decent, and I do love it.Too fun to dwell on it for too long.
Thanks Jibes!

We Were Heroes
Exceptional guitar work and vocals. Feels 80's to me. Great production, you are getting a huge sound here. I think artists in general are like canaries in a coal mine, spotting the harbingers of social change. Your scenario is not entirely far-fetched.

The thought police
You've got quite a bunch of talents! This is a scary but realizable vision of a not-too-distant future...with a powerful 80s-tinged arena-rock kind of arrangement. The massed vocals work really work well here. Guitar heroics have been well praised above, but deservedly... At times I almost got a U2 vibe out of the use of analog-type synth sounds.

Frontwards
guitars only for me, never was a big fan of that effect made popular by Hendrix, just seems kind of gimmicky to me. Not that I dont enjoy other guitar gimmicks, but that one always sounded goofy.
Thanks for the compliments, The Who reference is proudly accepted, I cant hide that influenc in my playing, even when I try to, lol.
Thanks a lot for listening!

future
Very lush instrumentation, very moving story line and beautiful arrangement. My only (small) quibble is that the drums seem to be pushed way back in the mix, so it misses a bit in the ability to create that driving mood via it's tempo. Great guitar tone and really well executed harmonies and backing vocals. Certainly rock opera fodder as you suggest. Don't give up on it, this thing has legs. Thanks for the cool track.

Lush
thanks Phil, as a huge fan of your stuff, I shall take your advice and see if I can bump up the drums a tad. I was going for strong vox on this one because in the past my vocal tracks were too far in back, and I have been having some issues with things clipping, and I cant figure out where I went wrong to cause it. The main thing maybe is that I still dont have any monitors, I mix in my headphones. I really want some, but money is tight.
Thanks so much for listening Phil, I was hoping you would hear this one, I value your input.
Peace

Tasty sound palette!
You've got a lot of interesting things going on in this tune. My attention was immediately captured by the opening trumpet echo fanfares.

Then the sound-bed expands with the other instruments and the vocals. I particularly like the way you handled the mix on the vox, with close harmonies and a bit of reverb.

The prose almost sounds like science fiction but the message you convey is rather scary, and could happen.

My only suggestions is that the instrumental break could be shortened a tad. I'd also like to hear the trumpet theme reintroduced into the song at intervals in the background; it sort of set the mood and I was a little disappointed that it happened only at the beginning.

Well, I *AM* a brass player after all! ;-)

Nice tune.

Yes
the influences are many indeed. Aside from the word "Heroes" I'm not sure I hear any likeness at all to that song, but I will take your word that you do. I thank you for calling it great work, I did put many hours into it, too many. I think I over produced it, which is a habit of mine, It got away from me a bit.

We Were Heroes
I like this song - very well put together. You have a real feel for creating a strong compositional structure. I hear Moody Blues, and oddly enough Simon and Garfunkel (mainly in your vocals) influences. I fear your lyrics may be a prophecy of things yet to come in this country.

Technically speaking, I think your mix needs a bit of tweaking. To my ears, the low end is lacking, and some parts, expecially percussion, at time seem a bit hot - I hear some distortion with things like cymbal crashes. But honestly a great musical effort - I enjoyed listening, so thanks for sharing!

Epic
Love the epic sound to this, great mix of instrumentation and some lovely guitar work throughout. My only crit would be that the double vox on the verse seem to stumble a little to get through all the words. The chorus is great rousing stuff. Get down that arena now for some lighter waving
