Never So Lonely (Rebsie vocal)

Description
I originally posted this song with the title "A Day In Her Life" in March of 2008 as a demo with me singing, and a few weeks later with Rebsie singing. This submission is a new mix of Rebsie's version. It isn't without some nits, yet I think it an improvement over the previous version (unfortunately no longer at MJ). My wife thinks this is my best song... meant to be sung by a female vocalist... in this case, wonderfully by Rebsie.

Check out her music at Rebsie Fairholm

Lyrics
Originally in the Key of G; Rebsie version in the key of A

G Em
Rising each morning, a muffin and tea by the window
G Em
Gazing outside at clouds drifting by
Am C G
Replaying memories of what could have been
Am C G
Sure of herself, sitting there without him.
___________
G Em
Walking to work, she pauses alone at the corner
G Em
Never a doubt, she always knows what to think
Am C G
Now as she stands there no longer- can she say
Am C G
Regrets her companions, steps off the curb on her way.
___________
Chorus:
C G Em Am
Never so lonely as she was that night
C G Em Am
Never so lonely, never so right
C G Em Am
Never so lonely as she was that night
C Am G
Never so lonely that night.
____________
G Em
Back at the flat, she reaches to open her mailbox
G Em
Hoping to find the letter that's never there
Am C G
Telling herself no matter, it's OK
Am C G
She hurries inside, closing the door on the day.
____________
G Em
Dimming the lamp by her bed, awake in the darkness
G Em
Thoughts of the emptiness since he's been gone
Am C G
Wondering how it is she'll carry on
Am C G
Re-assuring herself, she did nothing wrong

Jack and Rebsie
Rebsie's vocals are perfect for this song, and the harmony is delicately exquisite. Jack, your guitar sounds fine, too. It's good to hear a remake of this song. Thanks for reposting this new version!

Her voice and harmonies....

do shine in this song. It was a bit of good fortune that she jump in on this. This mix is cleaner than the previous one, and with ChannelStrip to overall sound is better. This has been close to being finished for several months. I decided to go back to it, a few final tweaks and I thought... yep, post it.

Thanks R.

Like where you went,
like where you're going my friend. Rebsie is such a special talent when she does a song like this. The simple backtracks work, but I think it needs a Bass to drive the bottom end a little more.

I could be wrong, but ....

If I come up with something I'll send it to you.

if you come up with something you like. I really don't like faking bass on my keyboard, so most times I don't thought I know it would be good to have some. Like all my (our) songs, there's always another-better take to be had. Thanks Ed. I'm sure if Reb drops in she'll appreciate your comments.

Great!
Rebsie's voice is a perfect fit. Her Brit accent is most appropriate. Takes me back to Petula Clark and those British boy bands. Wonderful guitar playing, Jack. I don't know how you do it.

Lyrical articulation is back! What a wonderful landscape of sentiment. Pure soloing, luscious choruses. Wow and wow again.

I wonder what this would sound like with uke and tuba?

Lovely song Jack & Rebsie
And Rebsie's vocals are the right touch here. A true singer-songwriter piece, one I could imagine people singing along with at a coffee house concert. Touching story, made all the deeper by the production here.

Thanks folks,

Has a touch of 'She's Leaving Home', along with 'Eleanor Rigby' and 'Her Morning Elegance' and a bunch of songs about being lonely or betwixt and between....

Dadai.2 said 2788 days ago (February 1st, 2010)
She's Leaving Home...

was in mind when I was writing this one. I hadn't thought of Eleanor Rigby, but you're right-it's in the same vein... I'm not familiar with Her Morning Elegance. Who is that by?

Moving on and saying thanks.

This is much more than my ears expected.
Great (I really mean great, at times it is used to freely here) guitar playing, the two guitars blend flawlessly. The vocals speak (or should I say sing?) for themselves, Wonderful!

Beguiling combination
This is extremely pleasing on the ears; resonant guitar playing accompanies Rebsie's always lovely voice.

The sound-quality of this mix shifts slightly just after Rebsie's first line ending with "window" -- all of a sudden the soundscape seems to open up, when the guitar sound comes more into my left earphone. The mix felt more balanced from that point on.

It does seem, however, that Rebsie's voice is more "immediate" in this mix, with the guitar in a different sound-field, further away. I wonder if there's a way to integrate these different tracks a bit more?

I don't want to sound like I'm nit-picking, as the performances are excellent here, and the overall effect is satisfying. Your guitar playing and Rebsie's voice come across very well in this recording.

Very nice listen!

Beguiling combo...
Thanks Cameron for your thoughtful comments. The "sound-shift" of the guitar in the beginning was a purposeful choice, maybe not the best way to begin. The idea being a lone guitar to one side, then voice in the middle, finally the full sound, completing the movement. I wasn't sure about it, still not...

Reb recorded this very close to mic for an intimate vocal. I don't know if the guitars need to be as up front, as it might crowd that "lonely" space of Reb's singing, so I kept the guitar further back with a little more reverb. Don't know... I'm certainly no recording engineer... or recording artist... or (Hey I just work here...).

As I wrote in the song info above, this offering is not without nits... so your thoughts are taken as constructive feedback. Thanks. And I am glad you liked this one Cameron.

cheers...

Yay Rebsie & Jack
I do indeed like your writing and performance here a lot, Jack... really poignant music, which is perfect for Rebsie, who does indeed sing this so well. I found the hard panned-to-right guitar a little distracting in the beginning (with headphones)... perhaps not panning it so far might help... but that's a very minor technical/subjective issue. Overall, this is gorgeous.

Hi
Great to hear the meeting of two mj:ers who are both so familiar by now. Listening to this beautiful piece, you can so well hear the Dadai-personality residing within composition and melody. And so well, of course, we hear the Rebsie vocal-personality - both at the same time. An interesting experience to make .. a quiet adventure for an ol macjammer.

A really wonderful song friends. I can so well understand why your wife like it Jack.
