Description
Rabbits gone wrong!

"Chocolate Rabbits" was the first-ever song I posted to MacJams back in April 2006. The tune and I actually go all the way back to 1984 when I recorded the first version with a Radio Shack synthesizer on a cheapo cassette deck. Since then it's evolved into several different versions - all keeping with a tradition of incorporating a fragment or two of that original analog recording into the mix somewhere. In this mix they appear as the disconnected, spacey spoken bits around 4:20.

I don't know why I like this song so much - by now it's become kind of a signature tune for me. As strange as it is, I've always imagined it as a great vehicle to let a band just kick out for twenty minutes of bizarro instrumentation solos. I usually layer on bank upon bank of synthesizers soaring over the deep, dark and solid rhythm riding that simple, signature bass line that, really, is what the song's all about, but a guitarist could probably just roar away with this as well.

By the way, no guitars were used in this version - everything was wrung out of GarageBand. The guitars are Big Electric Lead twisted into knots until it screamed.

Big, big thanks to the organizers who put the MacJams Reunion together. This party's a blast. I'm going to find the bar and get twizzled.

Lyrics
Chocolate Rabbits

Chocolate Rabbits
They turn me on
I feel sad
When they are gone

And chocolate rabbits
Sailing out to sea
I feel sad when they are gone
Because they are not with me

Chocolate rabbits
They shock and awe
Here them on the radio
And legislating law

Chocolate rabbits
In your home town today
Don't let the government
Take your rabbits away

Chocolate rabbits
(They turn me on)
Chocolate rabbits
(They turn me on)
Chocolate Rabbits
(I feel sad when they are gone)

That
jammy section at 4:00 is a gas: I really enjoyed the drums. And you'll get no dissing of midi from me, I'm a big fan of Big Electric Lead.....

wow
this song is wild, can't believe what a great miami vice guitar sound you got from GB. i really loved at 4:25 when it was just that held note and the flanger; was totally taken by surprise when the drum solo came in. awesome.

Most excellent dude
with a twist of eightiness still resounding thru' it, and I like this sparse soloey bit with the 'gtr'and drums having a 'chat' with each other. I think it's a big fun track and has obviously matured well for being laid down for such a lot of years .

Cheers . Jarvoid

So much synthy goodness!
This is one of those great SOLID chocolate rabbits, not one of those hollow ones that collapse once you bit the ears off. A really great wash of sound. Very cool tune. Glad you revived it for the reunion fest. Enjoyed it.

Rabbits without Barriers :-)
cocoa rodentia, not something to be eaten lightly. there is something about the musical curves and bends that are so wrong they are just so deliciously right... the music is wacky and really compelling, i understand your fascination with this. of course, I worry that for the 2012 MJRF and your exponential talent, this will become an 80% dark chocolate 50 foot rabbit, and then who will save us?

A most worthy cover of the live version
Gets better with every hearing. It's amazing what you can do with the BG guitars. Clearly I'm not trying hard enough in the rock department. So much in this one to love between the synth and guitar leads. And that solo at 4:43 - I think the drummer is an octopus. I was waiting to hear if the band would start smashing their instruments at the end. I think they were having too much fun playing.

Thanks Rik,
Take care,
Doug

Man this is great Rik
So glad you posted this song again. As much as I like this version, I'd still love to here the "Fake Live" version you had posted on the old account.

That version is the reason I do the fake live sets I do for these festivals, and the Grand Ole Opry one I did in 2008.

But alls fair in love and music, and I think you did a fantastic job on this redo. What a hoot man and some really great work to boot.

Love it, it's going on the iPod.

I want my Chocolate Rabbits
So tired of The Man taking my Chocolate Rabbits away from me. Nice reunion entry. This is cool and so glad that there are no real instruments used. I can tell you spent a lot of time on this... Kudos... like that analog - would love a 20 minute space jam on this...

Love that thumpin bass line, and the drum fills. Nice job wringing those guitars out of GB. I can see those gigantic chocolate rabbits lumbering down the street like the Stay-Puft marshmallow man in "Ghostbusters"

Who ate Rocher rabbit?
Impressive bending of Big Electric Lead here Rik .. not sure about some of the effects on the drums .. and I'd perhaps bring that rolling B52's esque bass up. Supremely unhinged. Glad to hear the re-work.

Big sound
Great tune, especially with the 70s sounding synths.

The mix is decidedly not 70s. It sounds high tech and pretty spiffy.

Cracking stuff
Loved the vibe to this! It's great to revisit stuff. Has a 1985 feel to it in places. And as for those lyrics... It's time those damn rabbits got their comeuppance!
