Description
San Carlo Bay was my first up load to MacJams. Like most new artist I found an array of wonderful musicians and wanted to be a part of it. I was new to Garageband, but found it quick to build a project. As my GB skills improved I noticed many problems with the mix. The recording was in the red, causing distortion and clipping, the percussion was muddy, the organ and guitar parts were clashing. Over the following months I started making correction and rerecording the percussion and bass tracks but never finished. While looking around MacJams I saw a comment about MacJams Reunion 2010, San Carlo Bay fit the theme, so I spent most of January finishing the tracks. Last year for MJRF 2009 I posted a track I wrote for my grandson call "For My Little Somebody" the response was great. MJRF allowed artist I never knew to hear my music, many still comment today.

The original tune was not called San Carlo Bay, it was written while watching my grandson playing with the cousins. They pulled open a drawer and were making rhythms with bowls, measuring cups, and spoons. But what caught my attention is the cadences of their speech (ages 1,2,3 at the time). Da-da-da-da, da-da-da-da, da-da you will hear the same rhythm in the melody line. After it evolved I called it San Carlo Bay, a play on the name Carlos Santana. The lead guitars are MIDI, I had the MIDI guitar in my hands while watching the children play, and never got around to changing. San Carlo Bay is a combination of MIDI, acoustic, and electric instruments. Many years ago I played professionally, if I still did today the tracks here would be of a different caliber. Today the music I write and perform are for the entertainment of listeners friends, and family. I hope you will enjoy!

can totally here the carlos connection. Although hard to get a decent guitar tone out of midi I thought this worked well. Love the progression. Tasty organ sound.

MIDI
The problem is no so much the tone, your are actually hear real guitars, the problem is the attack. You do not get the sound of the pick on the string or the release of the finger sliding down the frets (glissando). You will hear a series of small notes instead.

Wow Steve
This is excellent my friend. I've never heard the original, but this one is great. I know what you're talking about when you said,
"Many years ago I played professionally, if I still did today the tracks here would be of a different caliber"

I'm in the same situation, and it is sometimes very frustrating to not be able to play what you used to play all the time.

But as I said San Carlo Bay is very well done my friend and I'm glad you made it you Reunion Festival entry.

Born and raised in Southern California, so my music reflects the East Los Angeles culture. The Hamond B3 sound is a GB patch I tweaked.

your lines are way more interesting than Santana's! and I LOVE Santana.

I heard this post a couple of days ago and now again. I couldn't believe that's not a real guitar when starting to read the comments! Incredible expression you get from a midi instrument. The percussion ending is also awesome.
It feels warm inside when listening to it, specially in the winter of Chicago. Thanks man for the music, and I apologize for my chronic commenting procrastination. Glad you left a note on my side ;-)

Thanks for your kind comments.
Many are not aware that the majority of MIDI guitars are just a regular guitar with a controller attached to convert the audio to a MIDI format.
What is difficult is to create a convincing patch that emulates the real instrument you are attempting to capture.
The other problem is the attack and release, You just can't capture the sound of the pick hitting the string. If you slide your finger up or down the frets you get a series of notes instead of a glissando sound.
That warm sound you hear? That is the Southern California influence.
Todays high 60f, tonights low 38f.
I'm not rubbing it in . . .

is no problem for me: in general, I'd like to hear more of it!
There's a certain Steely Dan vibe here that I like a lot. Reading over the other comments, I can say that a lot of great times are made of 'stuff' ;-)

I WAS ready for a full-on blowout after that timbale run at the end, though.... Quite a ride nevertheless! Thanks!
