Description
Last year I went back and re-made my first upload to MJ - and here's a complete revision of my second song posted 7/4/2006 as When Is? http://macjams.com/song/22294
In the process of re-recording the song it took some pretty significant left turns and resulted in a new tune that bore little resemblance to the old. I tried working with the original lyrics without happiness - so I sent the tune to Steve (echoroom) for a new life. As usual he delivered in spades. He sent at least seven vocal tracks for me to work with - leads, harmonies, choruses etc. and left it up to me to do this mix.
Steve says: The lyric was inspired by the work of Terry Bradley, an Irish artist whose current work is concentrated on paintings on men, depicting characters based on Ireland’s hardworking docker industry and the Sailortown area around Belfast which saw it’s heyday over 100 years ago and culminated with the building of the White Star’s magnificent Titanic.

Many thanks to Steve for his work here - he has such an amazing gift. And thanks to Jiguma for hosting the festivities.

Lyrics
Sailortown

This town that built the ships that carried you home
These hands that banged the nails and carried the stone
Taught you to punch and pray (x2)

Women kiss goodnight; tomorrow will spit you out
City of Iron
Lion in the heart of man; chaperone the lamb
City of Iron

White Star line

Women are where you drown, sirens of Sailortown
City of Iron
Men like a broken nose, mother of pearl and rose
City of Iron

White Star line

This town that built the ships that shattered the ice
These hands that banged the nails and brokered the tides
This town that teaches you the life of the night
Taught you to pinch and pray (x2)

Back to rock 'n' roll...
Bud,
You're in your element here. This is a really solid performance and mix with a ton of vitality and inventive leads sprinkled throughout. I very much like the "off pitch" bends that lurk in the background... Oh...too short, man. I could easily stand another 2 minutes of this song playing itself out. Well, nevertheless, it is cool as it is. ... Wish I'd had a lyric sheet because I couldn't catch all the words. (That's always my problem, though.) Congratulations to you and Steve on a really nice collaboration. I enjoyed it very much indeed.
(P.S. and now I know what you really look like. Nice photo!)

Might get a lyric sheet - we'll see
You mention "off pitch" bends - I never think about them as off - I guess I just like the dissonance or tension - but I hear what you mean. Thanks for dropping by. BTW - it's my aim to keep all songs under three minutes unless there's a darn good reason for them to be longer.

Powerful
Bass & drums drive this thing full throttle ahead, but then there're those layers of synths that don't sound cluttered at all. I don't know how you do it. Then that guitar that carefully doesn't care much what's going around, with those bends and crazy off scale notes.
Steve's vocals flawless as always.
Top stuff.

You're right about the flawless vocals
the man's a genius. As for the lack of clutter: it didn't sound like this a week ago. Then I finally decided to try what I've read about here and isolate frequencies by instrument or track. So I went through each track and determined the dominant frequency at work and rolled off the others until I had all frequencies playing but by different "voices". It's a really neat trick that only took me 4 years to try. I guess I got lucky intuitively at times in the past - but the scientific method actually works.

Solid rocker here guys
Full sounding mix, and I'm always a sucker for the filtered effects on lead vocals. The drums sound great, synths and guitars all pull their weight totally. The chorus reminds me a bit of Jethro Tull.

It sounds like working on this was great fun and full of surprises.

Cool!

it's fun to play with some filters and delineate sections. He's a champ for never complaining too. Your middle eastern tune is too much - really great.

A Pleasure
Thanks for inviting me to work on this with you, Bud. I always love your work, it's the sort of songs I'd want to write if I could play guitar. It's always a challenge to work on a strong that's structured, but this was great - very strong throughout. Funny, I've had a real dry spell lyrically, but this really flowed easily (I've e-mailed them to you today).
Interesting for me to hear how the song developed as you mixed it - I think that's one of your unsung talents.

Anytime, anywhere for you!

Steve - the pleasure was all mine
To think that I dropped this on you while you were out of town and you wrote the lyrics on the plane home and delivered the vocals pronto (the next day?). I was concerned about how tightly structured the song was when I gave it to you - but you really laid into it beautifully. Thanks again. As for the mix - I really learned a lot on this one - using tips I've picked up around here over time.

A working man's anthem
City of Iron. Great redo Kevin. Steve does have a wonderful way of bringing life to the problem children on our hard drives. The drums are really well executed. I have so little patience for programming. Cool effected guitars. Awesome track.

So it gets built up backward....
...from pre-existing tracks, and it ends up sounding totally inevitable...

I love the rhythm here, and I love the tone(s) in the guitar(s).... I like the thickness in the lead line.... Helps the psychedelic phrasing sound more modern....

I love that clanging rhythm guitar in the right channel....

And then that set of Steve vocals, both the performances and the recording/performance, takes it right over the top.

Exceptional collaboration, guys...

good mix
You indeed have a lot of elements to work with here, and it fits together pretty nicely. Maybe the band could be slightly louder; the emphasis is a bit much on the vocals for my taste. That's always a dilemma: when is the vocal intelligible and when is it overpowering?

On the whole this is very good. Good ingredients, good mix.

Love the ripping rhythm guitar to start things off, that boomy bass sliding up and down to notes is cool too. Cool lyrics "punch and pray" is a great contrast. Drums are great here too. A loop? Huge sounding mix to pull it all together, all the more impressive b/c you're using GB.
