Never Been So Lost

Description
This is one of the most recent songs I've worked on, but I'm in the middle of a move and am unable to record the guitar solo for a while. Guitar and vocal are triple-tracked. Drums are loops. The changing tempos were a major pain to program.

Lyrics
All of the sudden
Boy becomes a man
Nobody warned him
He doesn't have a plan
Getting a late start
With school and career
Worthless in his heart
He wastes another year
Last good thing vanished
True love he betrays
He has but one wish
That he could find his way

I've never been so lost
Won't someone show me the way
Never been so lost
Somebody teach me to pray
Seems all my hope is lost
Living day after day
I've never been so lost
I've got to find my own way

No sense of direction
Unsure what is true
Disappointing introspection
Losing old values
Lover he pushed away
Now alone and confused
There's nothing left to say
But she's gone and feeling used
He wants to repent
Healing restoration
But feels impotent
For any transformation

(repeat chorus)

Young man doesn't know where he's going
Unsure of whatever he's believing
Longing in his heart for a love that's true
He writes this stupid song because he's missing you

Off to a promising start
I assume you're gonna add leads - and maybe bass?
Time changes must have been a bear.

Hey Bud!
Thanks for being the first to comment upon my return. Yeah I still need to finish it. I'm preparing to move, and all of my stuff is temporarily in storage. So I can't record at the moment. I'm going to add leads. I've got them worked out, I just need to record them (after spending a couple of days getting my chops back up to speed). One of my friends was going to play bass, but we haven't had time to get together. And yes, the time changes were horrible to program. It was more than 2 years before I was experienced enough with Garage Band to pull off.

Cool
heavy guitar work. Tell me about programming drums and tempo changes. I feel your pain man! Cool song.

Drum changes.
Glad you like the song. The guitar is so heavy because I recorded 5 guitar tracks in unison, then determined the three best takes for each few measures and put them all together. To do the drums I basically had to program them in separate files for the two tempos, drag them both into a third file, and punch in fills manually.

Heavy!
Bit of slayer influence @ 30seconds in? Very nice.
And early Hetfield/Metallica sounds in their too.

Metal
Yeah Metallica and Slayer are influences of mine, but they are not the direct influences on this song. The riff right after the intro started as a Toni Iommi lick that I made heavier by changing it from Aeolian to Locrian and then extended. The percussive verse riff is inspired by Megadeth's "Train of Consequences".

Like it!
Beginning is dark, Black Sabbath influenced. Like the crunchy guitar parts. Will definitely have to collab! Great changes, and great use of empty space. Here a bit of James Hetfield in your voice. Great job!

Sab
Black Sabbath is definitely one of my major influences. Part of my inspiration for this song was to take Sabbath and make it heavier. I'm pleased that you would like to collaborate with me. What would you play?

Thanks
Glad you can appreciate the vox. I wasn't entirely sure what melody I was going to sing, so I recorded several takes. A lot of the takes were nearly identical, so it worked well for layering.

wow.
this has a great early 80's metal feel to it. when the wave of metal from england came to the states in the tail end of the 70's, it changed the way american metal was played from then on. melody and harmony gave way to driving rhythms and crushing beats. vocalists were either sopranos or moody thrashers, and the lyrics were alwayys about the outside of mainstream, just the way disinfranchised youth loved it.
this has both an early metallica/anthrax vibe, with a punk lyrical quality reminding me of the ramones. great tune. thanks for letting us hear it
