After hours lounge
Chill squared - the synth bed relaxes every muscle and the muted trumpet and other leads keep my attention so I don't fall asleep. Lots of room here to just revel in the soundscape - no where to go, no where to be.

Nice tune Vic,

Doug

Very cool piece. Instantly atmospheric and cinematic. Love that skanking guitar-sounding
piano among many other cool sounds and textures.
Nice build at the end.

this is nice....
Vic, you got a real cool & sultry sound going here. The little accompaniment things in this song are so great, offering textured support to your synth and lead elements, which I really like.

Nonesuch is much.

Logic
For some reason the software list is not showing up. Yes, Logic. The trumpet is a soundfont, the epiano has tons of effects on it, the synths are all Zebra; bass is ACE.

Thanks for the compliments.

Thanks, for the RE
I've to invest a new MAC so I can go back to Logic, but right now my budget is too tight.
One's again very very nice tune, sounds great in my stereo receiver 5*100 Watts.

man this is laid back
It is perfect mood music. I like the production too. You dont list the instrument you use but I assume its all keys. Fantastic solo at 2:30. The whole thing is a well consieved and executed song.

Vic's comment style
Vic, I'll try to follow your comment style, trying to give a constructive critic with the good and not so good things I hear. Keep in mind that overall I like it, but I'm being a little bit picky (well, you know your style better than me ;-)

Nice mesh of sounds in the background driven by the electric piano chords. The detuned strings are the best part: original, droning, setting a don't care too much laid back tone. Nice touches of loud chords here and there holds my attention. Some voice samples too. Cool stuff.
1:38 chord: surprising & adds right amount of tension after the long relaxing "verses" up to that point.
2:30 chord: nice downward tension in the solo chord progression here: jazzy. I dig the synth solo, but the synth is a little bit too loud in the mix I think.
Steps (or something like that) @ 3:34: nice touch although they sound a little bit dull, somewhat like the old BBC sound effects recordings. I don't know it was EQ'ed on purpose.

Nice trumpet considering it's a sound font, but it's too much of it for me in the whole song. Perhaps the same melody with other instruments could generate some variation.

Nice chord progression at the end.

Thanks
for the detailed listen. I agree that the trumpet gets to be a bit much after a while. I haven't decided what to do about that. The synth solo definitely needs to be pushed back a little.

The sound bits are from old movies, so they don't sound bright to begin with, and then I've pushed them further back by EQ'ing down the highs and putting a healthy dose of reverb on them. It's deliberate, an attempt to make them almost subliminal.

drakonis said 2784 days ago (February 5th, 2010)
intriguing... but...
I must admit that the EQ on the muted trumpet makes it too biting, accentuating its sawtooth quality which is a little unpleasant... perhaps moving it back in the mix and giving it more ambient reverb would help (or moving it WAY back with extra echoey reverb.) Also, perhaps it sounds better on regular speakers, as opposed to these headphones. The rest of the music, the writing, the synths & drums & mix, are really good in my ears. I like the almost Portishead sound here.

Drakonis

richard13 said 2784 days ago (February 5th, 2010)
Well, I like it.
It is, as others have observed, chill and laid back. I think the trumpet sounds a little sultry-in-the-small-hours but may be too forward (sounds fine on my speakers). Overall, it's a nice post but a couple of the little "accompaniments" as Dadai called them are too loud/jarring/disturbing to the general downtempo feel. FWIW
I did download a copy though, so thank you.

Yes.... their is some....
Very nice things going on here, some cracking in synth
that's in the bridge....
And yes the trumpet hurts a bit in headphones, a deeper
placement in the mix with a little verb on it would work well....

Other the that really good emotion provoking stuff.....

Who's in the picture?
:-)

Nice, laid-back tune, good background music. I found my attention drifting away when I tried to concentrate on the piece, though. Much better to just "let it happen" in the background.

The trumpet was a bit overexposed, but the soundfont itself is fairly authentic. Perhaps put it further back in the mix and add some reverb, might make it a bit less "in your face".

Nice "chill".

Old Skool Cool
You work magic my friend, a delicate track like this could easily end up with a weak foundation or thin. However the bass and drums are simple but very effective. All those little tidbits in the background keep the ear alert. But that chord progression is awesome!!!

Just Chillin...
Awesome track Vic. Very cool.. sounds like something Miles Davis might have wanted to be a part of. Probably mostly to replace the muted trumpet (joke?) I am sorry Vic but it is a bit overbearing on the piece. I was hoping for a bit more note wise as well. It begged to go explore the key in some parts but it didn't (Hence the Miles Davis reference) I respect you immensely as a musician and songwriter and you always help me with my songs with honest critiques so I wanted to do the same for you. Thanks for a great piece Vic.
Peace

Nice work Vic but I'd echo previous comments about the trumpet and agree with you the synth is a little to upfront.

A lot of other little sounds in there (sounds a bit like paper rustling??)that made me listen very closely.

Cheers

Very cool
I like the chill vibe. The sounds arent too biting in my speakers but headphones may be a different story. I like the overall jazzy vibe of this piece. Sounds like andy may be throwing some sax on this song, that would sound killer. That way you could take some of the trumpet out if you chose to. I personally dont mind the trumpet but some real sax would be a nice touch. Enjoyed it. Well done tune.
