Light of Bethlehem (w/ mawigze and Roxylee) MJR2010

Description
This song is significant to me because it was my first collaboration with Roxylee. There were things about it on the original post that bothered me... The mando overpowered the guitar(played by Maureen) and there were some other tweaks that I never noticed the song needing.

This what I wrote about the first post:
One night I walked out onto my back porch here in the Dallas area. I can remember the nights as a boy under the West Texas sky where the horizon was nearly 360 degrees and the stars ablaze and many constellations visible. Then as well as now I was feeling a strong presence of the Lord in my life. The words blurted out into my little postage stamp of a backyard...' I've not seen the stars since I don't know when.' My love for Celtic music and all things Irish, a melody flooded my heart and I sat down with God and wrote this song.

There are references to ideas in the Bible that also worked into the song. The Star, of course, announcing the birth of The Messiah. Following and trusting and His provision of a new life and a new way to look at eternity. Without turning this into a Bible Study, other references include, John 1:9, Revelation 3:20 and Psalm 8:3.

I want to thank Roxylee and my wife for this collaboration. After hearing and seeing Roxanne's level of unapologetic faith I felt compelled to approach her on adding in her vocal talent. My wife, Maureen wrote a great deal of this song as to it's rhythm and timing thru the acoustic guitar. I played mando, sang lead and played the recorder.

I went back and forth on the naming of the song. Should I name it Star of Bethlehem or Light of Bethlehem? I finally settled on "Light" because one could debate astronomically upon scientific calculations of an actual star. Either way, I know it takes faith but I feel that it's true...

Seek peace and pursue it.

Lyrics
Light of Bethlehem ©
words and music by Andy Wigzell

I’ve not seen the stars since I don’t know when,
But I still sense the light of Bethlehem.
It’s Jesus I’am talkin’ about It’s Jesus you know.
If you’re followin’ Him You’ll know where to go – Oh…
You’ll know where to go.

You’ll know how to live and you’ll know how to die.
You’ll know how to give and you’ll know how to cry.
You’ll see life a way you’ve never before.
You’ll know when He knocks, you’ll open the door- Oh…
You’ll open the door.

I’ve seen His great love and His word thru the years
And seen His wise answers of many a prayers.
Seen lives that have changed and many have healed
And the promise of God that no man can steal- No
That no man can steal.

I’ve often wondered what life it would be
Had there not been a cross up on Calvary
I know it takes Faith but I feel that it’s true
That Jesus the Lord died for me and for you-
That Jesus the Lord died for me and for you.

When I consider the works of His hands.
The moon and the stars – His oceans His lands
I feel a bit small but I know I’am His own.
When you go with the Lord ya ne’er go it alone- NO….
Ne’er go it alone.

Truth is I was kind of expecting to do a bit of lyric bashing here, but I can't accuse these lyrics of being cliche, over-simplistic, or dishonest. Although I completely disagree with the religious message, I cannot criticize the way the message is presented here. Outstanding song with brilliantly inspired performances. I love the vocal harmonies. Beautiful guitar tone.

thanks DL
appreciate the non-bashing of the lyrics. It's not so much a religious message but more one of relationship. If we could sit down with a beer and a good cigar I could tell you my story and the things I've seen and those things that have been revealed to me. Really appreciate your comments- they are like gold for a song given freely.

Great revision Andy - a fine tune like this
deserves a second chance. Everything sits really well in this mix and the message is clear - as it should be.

Thanks! Maureen brought it to my attention that the guitar was not very pronounced. I had to admit that it was because I was a bit too close to the mando part.... ha, live and learn.

where to start?
Maureen's voice and guitar work are rock-solid here, and add a warmth that is hard to explain, but calming. Roxylee's distinctive voice just rises up and sprinkles starlight across this piece, beautiful. Andy, your singing is great here, as is the whistle and mando playing, sheesh, one talented dude! Great piece of music too. The places where you pan the voices to the far left/right was a little funky in headphones, but the only critique I can find. Overall, chicken soup for the soul. Excellent collaboration!

talent-fest!
andy, is there any musical thing you CAN'T do? i've somehow missed along the way that you have a solo-quality voice, but you certainly do. combined with maureen and roxy, these harmonies are terrific. great "live" feel, love the mando/guitar/recorder combo - congrats to all!

Yes,
I can't seem to get into a collaboration with a certain pianist around these parts. Thanks for the comment. We did do this song a lot live back in the music ministry days. I am most appreciative that Roxylee agreed to do this song in the first place. It was and is very encouraging...

Truly enjoyed this Andy
Very inspirational, and I like the way the vocals were panned. For this song, it gave it celebratory feel, like you walked into a room and were surrounded by people dancing an singing. Kudos to all. Thanks for posting.

I loved working with the harmonies on this one - specifically the sensitivity that Roxylee brings to the table. Recording with my wife and her on acoustic guitar made this one special for me!

Great musical testimony
I love personal musical testimonies. Thanks for sharing Andy. He is an awesome Savior. I'm looking forward to listening to some of your saxophone recordings. I also own a vintage sax that belonged to my Dad (Martin tenor, early 40's) which I recently had restored. I love the mellow tone of the older vintage horns. Thanks for welcoming me to Macjams.
