Description
For my daughter Christie...
I originally posted this song in the summer of 2004 here at MacJams. It is the first song I ever wrote (in 2001). I sang it to Christie on her wedding day. The old version, which can be listened to HERE, had percussion, bass, keyboards, and some vocal harmonies. This version is just my voice and guitar, as it was that night back in December 2001. It was Christie and her sister Carrie who gave me GarageBand in 2004.

The song/video is a compilation of that night with photo remembrances as well as some shots of me singing the song to Christie...

Lyrics
I remember, as Daddies often do
It was bed time. You were only two.
You said,
"Put my animals on my bed
Line the bears up straight
Daddy put them near my head
I can hardly wait", and...

CHORUS
Sometimes I get to wondering
If through the years you've known
How much I love you girl
And tonight how I love you so.

I remember your struggles and your joys
As you grew up, and left behind your toys.
Your eyes they sparkled
Sometimes they teared
So soon a woman
How fast the years, and...

CHORUS

Now new memories, they begin tonight
At this moment you start a brand new life
Someone new will tuck you in
Line the bears up straight
Laugh with you and cry with you
You can hardly wait, and...

CHORUS

Unadorned is nice!
Your vocals shine through in this simpler version. Watching the video while listening made it come alive. Thank you for sharing this with us, Jack. Lovely tribute to a lovely daughter.

the good stuff
man i hope i have the guts to sing to my daughter on her wedding day. i like the 70's ballad style, and the i like the lyrics, sentimental but honest and best of all straightforward.

have the guts...

Yeah, I had to drum up the courage to pull this off. I had sung a song the previous year to my oldest daughter when she got married. It wasn't an original song (although I rewrote some of the lyrics to express some of my heart to her). I tend to be a sentimentalist... especially when it comes to my family.
Thanks tempie.

Thanks for chiming in with the nice comments, Mcboy...

Voice
Your singing sounds straight out of one of the classier movies of the 60s and 70s. It's almost like Mancini wrote a song for you to sing. (Except that obviously this one is extremely personal for you.) Good stuff.

DAD tuning
tuned right to my heart. OK, I will admit in public, this teared me up. Jack, what a beautifully written piece of music, conveys perfectly a father's love and hopes for his daughter. Exquisite lyrics, elegant singing and guitar work, and a well-thought-out photo montage to accompany it. Cheers to a wonderful father and daughter and future.

Drak-
sentimental old dragon... I'm just like you. I start tearing up on these things and movies like "It's A Wonderful LIfe" even after seeing it 20 times.

Thanks for the great comments... very appreciated by me.

I experience...
...some of that "bear tyranny" too... The right bears having to be in the right place...

Wonder all you like, Jack, but there's question in MY mind...
Dadai.2 said 2781 days ago (February 8th, 2010)
Don't get me started....

Ed, you're the only one here that I would expect to get the "line the bears up straight" line. Time for a walk on the beach with you somewhere in the Boston area...

Christie does know. My "wonderings" are simply my self-doubts, my battles... or as my dear wife likes to say, "my demons." With much limitation, I live, walk and move, hopefully, slowly forward.

Thanks.

One of the most touching things I've heard in a long time. Completely wonderul. And so great to see the film, to be able to get a glimpse of your life. From here in Sweden, California is so far away. It's like a fairytale, but still so real. Thanks a lot Jack for sharing! Downloaded.

I like this version so much more than the first version, I remember it then, and i just listened to it now, and it's heart felt but this version just has much more intimacy and less distraction. The slower tempo helps to. nice job - wonderful song!

thanks for stopping in a listening to this remake. I agree with your observations; pretty much what I was hoping for when I decided to redo it with just guitar and vox. Glad to know the song works for you. Best to you.

Indeed. To have children and play such a role as parent in their lives, over so many years... an honor and a joy (not without a few speed bumps along the way, though). Thanks, Gaylen.

Wonderful
The slideshow was nice to see and as you sang it in the wedding it was a perfect companion to your song here. She must have been very proud of you, and I bet I would have struggled with keeping my tears and feelings inside if I was to do something like that... And I guess many of the guest had to dry a tear or two watching and listening to this. Thanks for sharing such a fine memory and moment with us. And it's a beautiful song!

Jack you are such a balladeer
This is a lovely song, to be sure. Sung straight from the heart with such touching emotional expression and authenticity. Crisp, clean, and honest. I, like Eduard, am totally teared up by this, and find the video all the more moving.

This is a lovely tribute to your daughter and a reminder to all fathers of the magic of their children - at any age.

Many thanks, and be well!
