Seafood Gumbo w/ AngelaHope

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
I am very excited to share my first collaboration with the marvelous vocalist/lyricist from LA: Angela Hope. I first heard her music the day before Valentine's Day when she posted her first song at MacJams. After a few tracks, I decided I'd like to contact her about working together. Thankfully, she said yes.

It might also be fun to compare this version to the all instrumental version: Seafood Gumbo Bop.*

"Seafood Gumbo" started as a classic sounding Count Basie inspired jazz-blues music bed. I sent her the music and within hours she had a rough draft of a song with lyrics so fabulous I thought we had a new standard on our hands. I hope you agree.

We will be collaborating on a series of jazz and funk tracks over the next months. I've already sent her 5 more tracks and can't wait to see what she adds to them. Certainly, her vocal-songwriting contributions transcend the rather mainstream groove I sent.

"Seafood Gumbo" is tasty! Again, a thousand thanks to Angela. I love working with you!

We will begin a collaborating team under the banner HOPE (under the CollabsBlab Challenge) to post some of the drafts that lead up to the final versions we'll post under our real names.

If you like this tracks, please check out all of Angela's stuff on MJ: Angela Hope and, if you'd like check out some other work I've done with jazz vocalist Woody Mankowski: Dreams III and A Promise.

Also, although my vocals cannot compare to either of them, please check out Crazy Story (w/ Thoddi) and Icarus II (w/ Texasfeel), if you haven't heard them yet.

*Please check out the finalized CD on CDBaby: The Muller's Wheel.

Here are all the draft/demo tracks from The Muller's Wheel on MJ:

Seafood Gumbo Bop
Oasis On The Rocks
Saddle Shoe Sally
Lost In The West Village
The Müller's Wheel
Windowshade
Fusion of Minds
Struttin' Up Bourbon

Lyrics
SEAFOOD GUMBO by ANGELA HOPE & TOBIN MUELLER

Seafood gumbo sure tastes good to me
Seafood gumbo sure taste good to me
Gonna fix a little cornbread for my man to eat

He loves me in the kitchen shaking my pots and pans
Loves me in the kitchen when I'm shaking my pots and pans
I'm crazy in love cause I got one helluva man

Soulfood lookin'
Good when it's cookin'
Fire down low
Gonna simmer real slow
Steaks on the griddle
Seasoned just a little
Not too spicy and straight down the middle
Gonna serve my man until I hear him holler for more

He's real good and sure does treat me nice
He's real good and sure does treat me nice
Tells me he loves me mornin', noon and night.

Love it!

Sounds like a digital recording from 1959!

You all belong at the top of this genre. Angela, you are awesome. These talented gentlemen are lucky to have a gal like you to make this an even greater song.

His Boy Sherman has a similar song, but with male vocals - also top of it's class. (LOL!)

Thanks for the download!

Stir up those spices... mmmm....
Oh this is hot! Tobin, great great jazzy bounce in this music, and great mix, everything is clean and leaves lots of room for the incomparable Angela to pour it on... (I almost wanted to hear a final piano chord/trill after her last word, though, it ended quite suddenly.)

Angela Angela... oh my this is beautiful. First off, the upbeat sweet message in the lyrics hit home here. Absolutely aDORE your allusive wordplay. Singing is gorgeously playful, love the little upturns, and the scat near the end was unexpectedly awesome. OK, enough glowing... must have been a bit too much cayenne in that brown sauce. Great work you two. I'll be back for seconds.

Drakonis

Thanks
Great comments. Cameron said the same thing about a final piano chord. I'm gonna have to think about that. Yes, I tried to leave lots of space. I also cut-and-pasted or simply removed a few words or phrases Angela sang that dubbed over my piano solo bars, trying to make it sound more like a duet, but other than those measures, my whole objective was to create spaces for her to sing. Thanks.

Live a the local jazz club...
Two extraordinary great talents making some good jazz music here.

Angela, you have something special for sure. Very fine jazz vocals. You seem to be a versatile singer that's able to make music within any genre.

Tobin, you are very professional in everything you touch. This time I think you have shown us a side of you where you dig into your vast repetoir of styles and just roll out just the perfect style piano, both sound and performance for this jazzy gumbo. I dig that piano solo.

Could you reveal the secret about the cool upright bass and the perfect drums? Are they for real, 'cause they sound it...? If it's a keyboard bass and drum loops, you sure did a fab job of putting it together, and making it sound so live. It sounds like a live recording from a jazz club.

There will be saxes in a few upcoming tracks, to be sure. I've played Seafood Gumbo to my favorite sax guy I collab with (Woody Mankowski) and he loves it and is on board to lay down some of his magic.

Thank you for suggesting using your talents as well. I will DEFINITELY keep you in mind to add to something in the future. I imagine this collab with last at least throughout this year, so you will probably hear from me in the coming months... Very kind of you to volunteer!

Wow, you two....
...lovely swing to this, and I love the lyrics and vocal.... Plainly I have to go and check out Angela's MacJams catalog...

I'm impressed with the bass and drums--I KNEW the piano would be good, but it could've had its goodness resting on something pedestrian, and this really bops along....

This song really wants to be a standard....

Pairing
Thanks. Regarding the ending, I originally had it end with the bass, and Angela's final phrase was over the preceding line. But I cut and pasted her last line to sit at the ending, mainly because I was reminded of a few of Ella's tunes that she ends this way, and it seemed to sound better in my ears. I like the idea of Angela being the last thing we think of. A few other tracks will end with piano chords, so this, hopefully, will work in context as a variation with the others.

Damn straight on that one! Ella Fitzgerald and Nancy Wilson, that's what I heard in her voice. Smooth, without unnecessary embellishments, just totally in sync, perfectly in tune and filled with the joy of the music. Plus, she writes lyrics, on top of all that! I'm in heaven dreaming up stuff for her to do next...

It doesn't get...
...any better than this! The next CD is waiting to be pressed! Such smooth and secure singing backed by piano, bass, drums that are always in the right place at the right time...and kept subtly in the background with a few pop-outs when appropriate. Professional all the way, but in a relaxed, ain't-this-cool-and-we're-havin'-fun sort of way.

The next CD
Wouldn't that be great? I'm hoping we can eventually compile 10-12 songs. I have 7 possible tracks so far. She's definitely inspiring me to lay down so classic progressions. Unlike nearly every other project I've done in my career, I'm trying to stick to mainstream stylings in a genre, to slot this in with a clear categorical identity, not just to take advantage of this aspect of Angela's voice, but to simply be entertaining music. It's been great fun. But we have no timeline or goal, so far, other than creating good tracks. Thanks for your comments.

I love cooking songs
I've always had several ideas of composing songs after recipes, well, that's a different story...
This is very cool, and in regards to a recent discussion, Tobin, you would just love it in New Orleans. The song: very laid back, and somewhat "lazy", poetic arrangement, the "crazy" bass and drums, works well with the main keys of the piano and of course with Angela's very impressive voice. I always though that songs about cooking made them a bit surrealistic, and no difference here (this may be a personal observation of course). I can't really give any advice, this is not my kind of music and it sounds pro. I can only like or dislike, this I like a lot!

Actually
I felt on third listening, that the bass (possible also the drums), could be lifted forward in some section of the song. It's a really cool arrangement between the two, but it gets a little lost in the back... Of course, this is very personal, just a reflection, an idea...
Check out my latest song called Rune XV
TobinMueller said 2646 days ago (July 21st, 2010)
Mixing the bass
Mixing bass is the hardest thing. It responds so differently depending on playback volume and what speakers are being used. I often feel bad for bass players. Like playing piano in a pit orchestra... the sound can overwhelm. That's why I love mixing myself, cuz I can appreciate performance nuances even if I decide to eventually mix them too low for others to enjoy as much. A tough call. Actually, I think her vocals are too loud overall and maybe bringing her down will help the bass...

This is excellent....great music, great lyric selection...the timing and phrasing of the words is perfect.......I think it is great, but agree with others on some kind of final chord thing...maybe a count basie type of blues/chromatic closing lick??

Love it. Love it. Angela, I've loved your stuff but never heard you scat like this, nor play with quite this crisp a band backing you up. So good.

Tobin, Angela, you've both read some over-the-top positive comments from me. Together, doing such hot jazz, it's al too much. And while the performances and recording are stunningly clean, I humbly request that you go out and do some live stuff -- if you ever get the same chance, geography & time allowing. I would love to hear the sweat. All the best to you, Tobin, Angela, too.

Thanks for the DL... on third listen, I find compelled to salute the keyes, bass and drums individually... al are so in the pocket here.

Thanks. I love stuffing stuff in my pockets. Cargo pants are a great invention, no? Wish I could wear them at gigs, but I've never seen anyone do that at a club... Maybe it'll be my new signature look!

Oh yeah, got it down here. Hasn't been this much class on a stage since the last time Ella Fitzergerald stood up.

Class
Thanks. Yes, the whole early Ella feel, mainstream yet classily hip. Thanks for the rare visit!

Lambert Hendricks and Ross
Is what I remember when writing this waaay back in February. It was inspired by their song called "Down Home Cooking." One of my favorite singers is Annie Ross. Tobin hang tight. I got you on the next song in a week or so. Peace!

Tobin and Angela
Yowza!!! This is sooooo good. Tasty, tasty lyrics, wonderful Tobin jazz magic and brilliant vocals from Angela -- oh man, woman, that is just so gorgeous. Had to d/l this one and put it in my "jazz women" folder on iTunes. I feel like I owe you both a buck.
