Description
Been talking every week with someone and they have yet to realise that my Japanese skills are not as good as they think.

Lyrics
You think I speak the language 'cos it's easy enough for me to say "what you doing at the weekend?" and "isn't it a lovely day?". And when you talk back to me, sounding like a machine gun, I no longer fear the time of that expectant look when you're done.
And I'm surprised you really can't see my inability. This isn't basic conversation - there's only one thing left for me.
I'll just smile and nod and say "hai".
No "mo ichido kudasai".
I've left it too long 'cos we've been chatting for over a year. I only understand five percent of what I hear. You rarely ask questions, I never know what to say - carefully reading context, I guess "erm...Tuesday?"
English in a foreign accent and you seemed to understand what I meant. All this time we've talked together - my answers have had no content.
I'll just smile and nod and say "hai".
..."Something, something, something..."
I'll just smile and nod and say "hai".

Language barriers made a supple theme for this romp. The production is excellent and supports the material. I heard the solo as Japanese as well.

Genius
Songs like this which in the face of it seem like throw away comedy numbers, hide a true songwriting talent. Yet again you make me laugh and think in the same song. As someone who shares his life with someone for whom English is a third language I found this funny and uplifting. Great music too, that guitar solo is a killer.

You on a roll or something?
This is so relevant to learning any laguage (although Japanese is probably a bit more difficult than French for us Brits!)

Great stuff!

ha,ha! how often this happens to me. yes sometimes when i'm the listener, but more often it's when i'm speaking. i try so hard, but i get lost in details and forget the major point i'm trying to make. great job ste! you found a unique topic for a song and gave it a tune so we can hum along!

Smile and Nod
What a funny and genuine song. Love the "outro" with the something, something vox. I have had this experience in many languages other than English...and sometimes in English as well.

Feel for you ..
.. I can relate to this big time. I went through the same thing with Swedish some years back.. thankfully my 5% is now perhaps 65% .. but recently I've discovered I only really know 1 dialect well.. so back to 5% .. I tend to just say "Eh?" alot ..lol. Excellent, witty tune. Tack!

Great tune -
I really like the free flow of the structure and phrasing - like a conversation - one sided perhaps. Also - your guitar has an excellent tone for this piece.

Steve,
Boy do I feel your pain. I have been in a foreign country for an extended period without real comprehension and getting to the place where your in that comfortable place where you can fake some kind of grunting assent to comprehension as a replacement for the abject fear you felt in the early days.. (LOL) this is a great song.
Bravo,
Stephen

Hi!
Japanese are remarkably tolerant of foreigners who don't say a lot in return. I was there a few years ago for work, and found myself in a restaurant where I didn't speak a word of their language (except "beer") and they no word of mine. Yet the waitress kept making polite small talk.

Anyway, cool song. Nice guitar work.

Another great piece
sweet little bit of tunage, with sadly desperately poignant and funny lyrics... I was in Japan twice, and enjoyed the 5% I understood, but realized the 95% I was missing. And the "Sumimasen, mo ichi do kudasai" (please say again) got old right away and I too was doing as you say in this song, just nodding along and hoping to catch little footholds. So familiar. With a little tweak to the lyrics, this could apply to the non-language communication barrier in many marriages I see too... Partly why your lyrics are so universal :-)
ttfn,
Drakonis

Nice
love songs about the inane. Probably because I just cant seem to do it very well. In fact, my next song is going to be about just that. Nice vox as always and that classic STE sound is there. Nice guitar riffing, really sounds great when it comes in.

Son has to do a Japanese speach as part of his GCSE I'm going to play him this as warning of what happens if you don't do your home work!! He's coming over on a school trip in the autumn, ( most expensive school trip in the world!) Love to see how he gets on and wether this song will apply. Cheers Mark

I can relate to this
Most of my students are Mexican. I think I'm often guilty of assuming greater understanding on their part. I love the line "my answers have had no content." That can happen in my classroom. And again the quirky british style is awesome.
