Sound levels?
Does anyone have good advice on sound levels? I max it out after only adding 2-3 tracks. Even then, I always have to crank the volume on my ipod to hear my music compared to normal songs. They just never seem to be loud enough.

Ahhh... another ErinFix
Hey, what's this with "I don't know what I'm doing"... so is this with your new MIDI setup and you playing the real keyboard then? Holy cow, this is cool! Very inventive synth madness and cool melody, ominous backing, nice echoes on the piano.

As for sound levels, that is a science in itself... but two quick tips would be:
1-Try to get the level of each individual track up moderately high (almost into the yellow), just focus on one at a time at first.
2-If you are using Garageband, the master level meters lie, well, they are very conservative... when it is hitting the red, that's just about loud enough and OK to have happen. Also, there's a preference on newer versions of GB I think to do some "Normalizing" or auto-gain-control for you... I suggest turning that off, it just messes with you.

Hope that helps. Also, if you have ANY questions like this, feel free to post them in the forums. Firstly, people with more knowledge than myself will answer you. Secondly, people will be curious and go listen to your music. And you get your question answered. :-)

Very cool music here.

Drakonis

Thanks!
I'll check out the forums. I ended up using the computer keyboard for this one again. Hopefully it will get a little more intricate when I get around to using that new cable! You have been very kind - thanks!

Has a feeling of some of Tangerine Dream's later stuff. Love the sfx. Very creative Erin. As to sound levels I can only suggest the same as Drakonis. Try not to go into the red. As you add more tracks you will need to lower the volume of the existing ones because you have more sound when you first start recording the temptation is to make tracks louder to in order to hear them instead of the complete opposite. But if you are ever thinking of buying some mastering software then you should keep all your sounds substantially away from the red and let the mastering bring out your levels. Having them too high lead to major compression (heat) of the sound when mastering which isn't really the ambient style.

Please keep the music coming!

No, you don`t suck!!
It`s really interesting, enjoyed it.
Hehe, funny sounds, like in an arcade game or something like that.
Maybe George Lukas will call you... :o)
I think you have to be careful with the level of the deeper bass sounds. In some parts they are a tad too high in my ears. But on other stereos it might be ok.
I think it would be fine to hear another instrument in this composition. Maybe a soloing one?? Try it!! :o)

sound levels
Thanks everyone! I need to read up on sound levels, etc. I’m surprised how different a song can sound between my computer at home, my iPod in the car and my work computer.

This is important to learn
You will find that this is one of the techniques many of us do before posting a song... playing it on the stereo, car, iPod headphones, etc... to get the levels pretty even everywhere. It is tricky to do, but gets easier with practice. Many little things to learn, but they are fun to learn. Welcome to a whole new place, and as we in the software engineering industry warn people who are about to learn a whole bunch of stuff... "try not to drink from the firehose." Take a little at a time. :-)

A winner. As to sound levels, you probably need to master the song after you mix it. There are lots of ways to do this, but the simplest procedure is to turn the volume way up to check the mix. If it sounds balanced at top volume its probably ok. Next go to the master output and judiciously apply EQ. You will want to see what frequency bands rise above the others and try to trim them down a bit. Anything that has a valley, raise it, but not more than 3dB or it will distort. Next, apply some compression, if you feel it necessary to bring the dynamic range together, and finally gain. With the gain you want to get the peak at about 0 dB. It you still get occasional clipping then apply a limiter. You just need to be careful with all of this that you do not make everything in your song one volume.

This is a bit Greek to me, but I will dive into it with my next song. My husband is pretty good at sound stuff so I'm sure he will help me. BTW, I listened to "Rocky Road" and thought it was very good! You have a nice genuine quality to your voice.

Amazingly
catchy ... I really like that piano coming together with the base rhythm after 1:10 ... regarding guitars - really nasty :) but it seems that the peace and serenity of the piano people pervades and reigns over. Uncredible what a business wife, mum can do. Congratulations!

Hi SMG......
Seems like I'm late to this particular party. It reminded me a little bit of Yanni but that's OK with me.

I enjoy what you do with these pieces. You need to keep this up and don't try to change your techniques too much at any one time. Be bold and experiment with things. Your arrangements stand out, to me, as they are.

Take care.

Paul

Terrific
I really liked the groove and the structure of this. Just my humble opinion, if there could be a chance to record (or collaborate) using an actual guitar I have the impression that the result could be very nice to hear and very expressive too. Just a detail, but nonetheless, it's great music.

Soundtrack tone poem
I enjoyed the piano section, especially in the middle. The synth-guitar section reminded me of video game soundtracks. When it cooled out again, after the 3:00 mark, I lost the thread and intensity, the lead began to feel random and the bass needed to envelope me more (in my ears, anyway).

I almost always begin a song by turning down tracks and turning up my computer output speakers, so that I have a bunch of headroom in the mix to work with. If you don't do it right away, you may need to go back and re-balance a bunch of tracks, which is difficult if you've used graphic volume changes. Once a song is all in, I turn up the master to near max. After bouncing it to disk (mixing it down), I compress and limit the track using Peak (or Audacity) to further give it punch. If you have any more questions, feel free to drop me a note.

Thanks for joining.

Ok I submit
to the electric guitar overlords... Lady you are blowin my mind here... I couldn't even think of doing anything this good...

Your levels are level! No tilt senses or seen but then again I'm laying on the floor listening to this work of art or dominance!

Outstanding... trust me mixing is the hardest part. I used to think it was saying goodbye but I'm very wrong on that... You did well!

I like
when the music is telling a story, and that's what you are doing here, for sure. My favorite music style is ambient/synth/piano, but sometimes I need some "overdrive", and that's when the electric distorted guitars kick in... You've combined these nicely in this single track with great creativity. Congratulations and thanks for sharing.

yo
cool stuff, I like the vibe when that guitar and piano are seperated in each channel ( piano more prominent on the R and guitar on the left ). it gives the impression that they are ready to face off and duel from opposing fronts. the guitars charging from the left channel, and the piano keys from the right. now what would be cool is if you took this story idea to the next level and when that break hits and it sounds like everything is centered bring the piano back with the centered guitar, it would be like they are clashing and sparring.
example:
intro = sizing eachother up on the fronts
middle = the struggle bewtween the 2.
outro = back to seperated or even have them both die off in a fade.

just a thought, but cool stuff!

The piano-people get the last laugh
This song is (as intended ...) a wonderful contrast in opposites:   very-clean piano playing, alternating with positively-bubbly space funk in a way that leaves you on the edge of your headphones, wondering, “what in the heck is gonna happen next?”   But then it does, and it all actually fits very-well together.
