Description
My first collaboration with the amazing JS Tolar. More from him can be found at http://alonetone.com/jstolar. We're currently bouncing the possibility of producing a full CD together. :-)

The chorus is adapted from "O Death Rock Me Asleep", written by Anne Boleyn from the Tower of London. When he sent me this wonderful haunting music, I was reading Joanna Denny's beautiful biography of Anne, and it all seemed to make sense.

"Toll on, thou passing bell-
Ring out my doleful knell" (Anne Boleyn, 1536)

Lyrics
you cut the shape of a heart
with a knife so dirty
it would shame my sister if she knew
funny my skin is still tender
despite your cruelty
but then it was meant for you
do you walk on the water
and hot coals too
burn your bridges along with your witches
do you believe the preacher's song
cut my wrists on this crown of thorns
while I wait for you to decide what is true
toll on toll on
you passing bell (so long so long)
ring out ring out
my doleful knell (so long so long)
you're not in league with the devil
his grace is good
burns his books like any good hypocrite should
we live by the preacher's sword
cut my wrists on this bed of thorns
while I wait for you to decide what to do
toll on toll on
you passing bell (so long so long)
ring out ring out
my passing tell

Toll on, toll on... take your toll
As always, you choose your music with a discriminating ear, JS Tolar did a super job here... and your lyrics are great... the "crowning" achievement here is your choice of notes on the "Toll on, Toll on.." chorus, that just made me melt, I actually ached for that to come around again in the song! Yummy!

I must note a critique in the mix, though... it sounds a little tinny (higher midrange seems a little loud), especially when the guitar work roars in at 2:44 (which is very cool), but it sounds a little grating.

Overall, yet another chillingly beautiful collaboration, well done Tess!

Drakonis

I was going to say this has a Kate Bush vibe... but can't say that because it has more of a sister_savage vamp. Love the mood and feel to this. everything captured secure. Is that a planet you are holding?

A++++++
Outstanding! I love the lyrics. While they paint a vivid portrait of a frightening past, they are also very relevant to the modern world. The dreamy drifting vocal performance made me think of Kate Bush with Peter Gabriel. And the guitar solo just flat out rocked!

I would of made the guitars tone a little heavier,,and cut a few K off the voice,,, but overall great tune

The work on vocals is really professional, really nice reverb mix. I reaally love the sounds at the first half of it from the start with the bells to the erhu? with slight guitar picking. Agree with Edward about the g. solo ... a little too loud over the rest, I would maybe also choose some drive sound that is a bit smoother but that is a personal opinion. Anyway I like the feel (Portishead pops in my mind) and again bravo for the vocals!

Cool lyrics. They played for keeps back then. the melody and vocs evoke the sadness and anger well, and are a perfect fit to the tracks. Good complementary sound choices, great wah'ed guitar solo. My only nit would be when the guitar first cuts in it seems a little loud.

The vocal really
carries this song away. Kind of Amy Lee meets Enya. Very pro sounding. I like the subtle voice you have contrasting with passages where you are belting it out. Nice work

Lyrics and subject
are very well suited to this atmospheric and intriguing track! My work speakers (and ears) are bad enough that I don't really perceive the frequency deficiencies of which drakonis speaks. The spaciousness and yet comparative iciness of the synth timbres makes me think (in a good way) of old Peter Gabriel or the like. And vox are character-appropriate yet pretty. Great collaboration, great work!

Fab
Don't want to draw parallels or make comparisons like others have

I love the first half of the song but not too keen on that harsh guitar tone half way through and thereafter. I think its way to loud in the mix and distracts from the fantastic sound you have achieved elsewhere.

In regards to that - I love the depth and space you have created with the other instruments, effects and reverbs

Really a beautiful song (except for that guitar)

Very well done. Your haunting and mystical vocals are a perfect fit with JS Tolar's music. And, I am in the middle of watching "The Tudors" - just finished watching season 2, which is all about Anne Boleyn and her doomed marriage to King Henry VIII, so your lyrics strike a certain familiar tone with me. I really enjoyed listening to this - thanks!

So good. Started off so beautiful but then the guitars kicked in and took it to another level completely for me. The contrasting parts compliment each other brilliantly.

Lovely song and performance/s
Tess, you do this so well - great vocals. The "toll on" chorus melody is sublime. I'd probably drop the guitar solo a few db and give it a little less treble. From a totally personal taste viewpoint (no criticism intended), I'd prefer more straight drum sounds - there's a hint of overdrive on the drums which doesn't sit well with me. I guess I'm a bit of a purist :) What you've done here though is marry the old and the new in a very effective way. Portishead, Dead Can Dance etc come to mind as influences, but very much your own thing.
Excellent!
Neil

personal traits are made so clear with your
sharp analogies - and I like your tone quality put forth and displayed in this piece - your awareness - philosophy here - apparently - of minimal word usage is effective in getting things across . . . & so like ? = * yes *

Top notch quality song, hints of "All About Eve" and Kate Bush and a singer I came across called Ann Marie Helder who plays solo and with a band called Panic Room...seen live. Worth checking out. Cheers Mark

Atmosphere
Cool emotive song. All the parts fit so well and work to enhance the whole. Guitar solo is probably a bit loud and in my estimation a bit long too before rejoining the rest of the song for the finale. Reminds me of something that would be in one of "The Crow" movies or maybe some kind of vampire flick. The ponderous lyrics are well matched to the music. NIce!
