WARNING: THIS IS A SAD LOVE SONG. It may bum you out, so don't say I didn't warn you. ... Some time ago, I got hooked on the TV series EVERWOOD that was popular maybe five or six years ago. Yes, I know: it's sappy and a major soap opera. (Like YOU'VE never been sucked into one of these stories!) Nevertheless, I got into the story and the complications surrounding all the relationships. You will GET this song particularly if you've seen the show. I wrote it as somewhat of a summary. You will also GET this song if you've ever found yourself in a relationship that didn't work out because the timing of it wasn't right. Anyway, that's what I was thinking about while working over the lyrics and music. If you feel like crying a little, just go ahead. And then rejoice because you had any experience at all! Better to have loved and... (The song runs 5 minutes. I hope you make it all the way.)

Every time I think of you,
I just don’t understand.
We just seemed so right together,
Like it was always planned.
Then it faded like a dream:
We suddenly disappeared, my friend.
And I wonder if you and I
Will ever be one again.

I wonder if we’ll ever see
A way that’s free and clear,
Or if we’ll wind up all alone
Drowning in our tears.
It is so confusing
To be always wond’ring what I should do;
Always wishing that we were one;
Wishing I was with you.

Our timing’s been crazy.
That’s clear now to me.
It seems like we’ve never been really free.

Can’t you feel the things I’m feeling now?

Never have I felt this way.
I may not ever again.
But who know if it all we’ll have:
These feelings we can’t mend.
It’s so sad to see you go.
So lost and alone I feel right now.
Maybe when I’m alone again
I’ll find some peace…somehow.

Our timing’s been crazy.
That’s clear now to me.
It seems like we’ve never been really free.

Can’t you feel the things I’m feeling now?

Beautiful. Great vocals, melody, and piano playing is wonderful. This is full of emotion. I haven't seen the show, but I definitely GET this song. And yes, better to have loved... :) Thanks for sharing this; I very much enjoyed listening, and reflecting.

I think your voice works splendidly
for you in this almost musical-like song. I could hear this as a number on stage in a musical. Your voice seems to really suit this style. Nice work on this one. May be the best your voice has sounded to date!

One day
I'll find something not to like in your music.

Not today though.

I think this is my favourite of your "songs". Excellent lyrics and melody with that element of melancholia running through it.

Lovely changes and deserves to be on a wider stage.

A convincing vocal as well by the way!

There's so much good stuff going on here
like the roiling clarinets under the second verse. Great match of music - emotion and lyrics. I've said this before - but again you rival Sondheim in your management of story and arrangement.

It's like a gasp for air after slipping from the hand who would have saved you from drowning... was it the timing or perhaps the grip...

Amazing emotion.

love that climb at 2:30 with the woodwinds and your voice, into the soft pause. lovely having the oboe lead back into the song. this is beautiful Paul. you have a beautiful blend and balance of instruments. the bass supports things nicely, while the piano fills out the song. the touches of woodwinds and high strings are perfectly placed and never overtake the song, but help form the dynamic structure and emotional flow. really excellent work.

Not only...
... a great pianist, but a fantastic singer/songwriter.

I'm at joy whenever I listen to something from you, but this got me quite emotional... a very moving song indeed! Kudos.

Unrequited love
You say it all so well, Paul. I haven't watched that show, but can relate to the feelings. Your playing and singing is, as always, wonderfully expressive. I really like the timing in the phrasing.

oh paul .... this is just incredible. i don't know how it's possible that a pianist as exceptional as you are would ALSO have this fabulous voice! what an achingly beautiful, and beautifully put together song. good grief. this is gorgeous paul - thanks for the PM!
