The Alternative Ending with Jiguma and others

Description
Well, here we go, this was started before Christmas last year but for various reasons just didn't work out as I wanted and was reworked several times and now I'm fed up with playing with it anymore!

It's the first song in the Celebrity Torture song cycle. Lyrics & melody by Graeme Hobbs.

A huge debt of thanks here to everyone who contributed to this. I asked for more than one retake and they were all incredibly patient and also threw some great ideas in. I did lose hope that I would ever finish this but the ideas and support I got from the other guys really helped to push this through.

In reality this is a bit of a car crash of styles. Graeme had said he thought a Mexican or Spaghetti western might work with the cinematic theme. I duly set about watching Robert Rodrigues' Mexico trilogy (a good excuse if nothing else) and listening to his music. He seemed to be throwing all sorts into the mix so I just went at this with my normal scattergun approach and hoped that something would appear at the other end and thanks to my collaborators from here, and the Zoom Home Recording Forum, (http://zoomforum.us/) it did :-)

So, in alphabetical order

Tim de Ferrars (Macferret) - France – although Tim didn't play on this he gave me some excellent ideas on the arrangement of the linking section - http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=629959

Nigel Hardy - UK - keyboards (brass, accordion, hammond, strings and harp) - I can't emphasize enough how much Nigel contributed to this. http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=888286

Neil Porter (Jiguma) – Australia - wonderfully solid bass http://www.macjams.com/artist/jiguma

James Ryce – Toronto - vocals to die for - http://www.jamesryce.com/

Mike Wich – New York - guitar solo (asked at the last minute and delivered :) ) http://www.soundclick.com/bands/default.cfm?bandID=299442

Me – arrangement, £10 nylon strung guitar from a 2nd hand shop, Strat, mandolin, handclaps, other bits and pieces

Drums – I was really struggling with drums for this as it was very difficult to find 3/4 or 6/8 rock drums and I ended up buying a set of loops from these guys and I think it was worth the money! http://www.smartloops.com/products/multitracks/

The Alternative Ending © 2009 Graeme Hobbs/Dick Langford

The opening shot, will the critics be kind
The end and between is what stays in the mind
Did you touch someone's heart, did you move someone's soul?
The thing that's most precious is hardest to find

It's your birthday and Christmas all rolled into one
A continuous loop of your favourite song
It's the first time you kissed her, the last time you cried
It's the reason we live and be willing to die

It's the special edition, the directors cut
The alternative ending and all of that stuff
It's just nickel'n'dimes and shillings'n'pence
And try as you might it just doesn't make sense

The subtitles and dubbing were all out of sync
And the drama, if any, was pure kitchen sink
Not like a Hitchcock and one of his best
Not exactly like Cary in North by North West

It's the 5th of November, the 4th of July
It's happy new year and mom's apple pie
As the images fade and the violins swell
The good guys to heaven, the bad guys to hell

It's the special edition, the directors cut
The alternative ending and all of that stuff
It's just nickel'n'dimes and shillings'n'pence
And try as you might it just doesn't make sense

There'll be no remake made of your life

Awesome, all of you
But first among you is Dick. I'm glad you didn't let the earlier frustration and disappointment keep you from finishing this Dick, it's wonderful.

To Tim, Nigel, Neil, James, and Mike, thank you for helping with the song, your contributions sound excellent.
But mainly thanks for helping to keep Dick on track.

Wonderful Collaboration, all of you.

Amazing!!
Dick,
This was always going to be an amazing track, and I'm really glad to have been a part of it. Everyone plays fantastically well on this, and the overall concept (which was a little beyond me at first I have to admit) works really well. I have to say that the production on this final version is really, really good. It has so much life and energy, and the mix works perfectly - it's really good to hear the bass mixed so well, both acoustically and beat-wise.
Brilliant job Dick!
Thanks again for asking me to play along - always interested in helping out on your tunes.

The original concept
was also a bit beyond me if truth be known but we got there in the end.

Your bass was the thing that held this madness together and it wouldn't worked nearly as well without that solid foundation.

Thanks again Neil!

Ambitious & Impressive
At first I didn't get it. But after a couple listens I realized there's a Kinks at their most progressive about this. The vocal is very Ray Davies. And how much truly cool stuff in 3/4 time every gets posted. The production and mix are outstanding allowing the listener to hear each individual sound. Love the guitar solo. Rather Brian Mayish! And it's a rare artist that can make an accordion sound cool. Did I mention the songwriting is top notch. The ending shows this would hold up with one acoustic guitar and a vocal. But I'm glad you went all out.

DWL said 2689 days ago (April 12th, 2010)
Too ambitious by half
at least that's what I thought. I never thought of the Kinks but I guess it could be although I don't know what our Canadian singer would make of the Ray Davies comparison!

The guitar and the accordian are down to my partners in crime and I'm jolly pleased I left it to them. I think the ending could have been guitar and vox as well. Ah well, next time maybe

Thanks for the thoughtful comments. Much appreciated.

impressive
what an excellent production. very big in scope and delivery and pretty well blew my mind.
everyone did a remarkable job, obviously not a easy task to pull this off, but Dick you pulled it off in aces.

so if this is the alternative ending, what happened to the original ending? :-)

Graeme is a lyrical genius in my view. He's written so many good songs that I'm humbled by his output over the years.

This was a struggle to get right but my partners on this not only did what I asked them to do but imbued each contribution with their own style which is exactly what I wanted.

It's very much a group effort that I couldn't have done without them.

Now wait for the big dance number to finish ;-)

perseverance
Good job you stuck with this cos it all worked out brilliantly.
Amazing to think that all these people pulled together from different parts of the world to make this.
Good investment with the drum loops cos they work really well and allow the song to build up and take it down again.
Really great stuff.
Cheers

The drums were worthwhile
Thanks Brendan. The drums were one of the main stumbling blocks as GB doesn't have any 3/4 or 6/8 loops worth using in a rock song. If I had the money I'd buy the set but it's a significant amount!

I love the idea of getting all these different people across the world working together. It's a fantastic acheivement.

Thanks for the listen and comments.

Ah I know this one...
Wonderfully original and expansive, the production values carry this one beautifully. The song seems familiar, I think, it recalls Harry Neilsson to my ears.
The gentle wry wit and sense of relaxed pacing add to the amusement, just when I thought there was a sharp wisdom at the end- a pithy bromide, nicely done!

I hate this song because...
This song made me stand up, throw my chair over and dance like my feet were on fire. My girlfriend peeked into the room and thought I was on crack. I told her I was listening to this brilliant song I discovered on Macjams

She broke up with me shortly there after :(

A few hours later she called me and told me she too had discovered the song and that she had made a mistake... we got back together and now we both dance to this song :)

Global punch
Some songs come together in a snap - others have to incubate and then get endlessly tweaked to get done ... and even then uncertainty can linger.

It seems somehow fitting that a song called "Alternative Endings" has had to go through multiple takes : )

I love this song's sprawl. It's messy - yet unified, not unlike a modern metropolis.

It is a perfect example why I keep coming back to Macjams - to access a variety of amazing expressions by creative artists from around the world. In this case, there are musicians from here, there and everywhere in one place.

It really packs a global punch!

Yeh!!!
What an opening: Mexican Holiday a la Herb Alpert. Haven't heard that sound in a while...And than your wonderful waltz of a vocal tune. Wow! This is superb. I do love those ringing trumpets and the cool drum line that breaks out in a tiny roll now and again. .. Dick, you are a master of story writing in music and never fail to entertain in a theatrical sense. And pulling all the elements of this collaboration together is just a remarkable feat that I can only stand in awe of. .. At 3:30 the male/female harmony is wonderful...and then to fade. What a great track, great song, great arrangement, great mix, great collaboration. Bravo to all!
