Lo...A Rose?

Some biblical historians place the first Christmas at some time in the Spring of the year. Maybe that's why the song "Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming" flew through my head this afternoon. In any event, the song I am posting uses the traditional text translated by Theodore Baker in 1894 from a German poem written in the 16th century. New music for SATB choir singing a cappella just came to me, so I am posting that here. So, I am NOT "Willie, the Operatic Whale" (old Disney classic for those of you old enough to remember!...Check this out: (Willie, the Singing Whale PART I)
(Willie, the Singing Whale PART II)
), though I do have a digital choir at my disposal. THEY are the singers here, but only of mono-syllables. If you are interested in seeing the score, please visit my website (http://www.paulpage.org) and click on Music You Can Download/Choral Music...and follow down to the song in alphabetical fashion. There's a pdf of it there that you might like to look at while you are listening. ... Hope you enjoy this quiet number even though it may be somewhat out of season. (Oh, the rose above is from my garden about two weeks ago.)

Lo, how a Rose e’er blooming from tender stem hath sprung,
of Jesse’s lineage coming, as men of old have sung.
It came, a flow’ret bright, amid the cold of winter,
when half-spent was the night.

Isaiah ’twas foretold it, the Rose I have in mind;
With Mary we behold it, the virgin mother kind.
To show God’s love aright, she bore to men a Savior,
when half-spent was the night.

Hi Paul......
This is beautiful. With a real choir it would be spectacular, in the setting of an orchestral piece. I can hear both the choir and the orchestra practising now for its first performance!!

All the best.

Take care.

This is gorgeous
Tranquil, thoughtful, sensitive, dynamic. The choice to keep this as a choir only piece was brilliant. While I listened I was back in the pew next to Mom on Sunday surrounded by stained glass.

Lovely, Paul
Very lovely, but that's what you do; spread musical love. Thank you. And now I find out you're a gardener too! I won't have roses in my garden for another couple of months.

your use of the choir is as refined as your piano playing. Always a pleasure stopping by your place.

Wonderful timing in your inspiration
This piece is enigmatic, in that this is both restful and inspiring at the same time. I came to this from listening to the work of Eric Whitacre and I continue to be in choral heaven this morning. Thank you Paul for the gift of vocal tones to make Spring fully come alive for me today.

I was worried....
...just a little about how the digital choir would come across, but there was no need...

This is really beautiful, Paul. Some of it feels lush and some of it feels austere. I don't know how you manage that, but there it is.
