Lyrics
The Stranger
©2010 Joseph Gurner

I’m a stranger
In a familiar place
Among familiar faces
who don’t know my name

I walk among them
like a shadow of a man
Crying out
against the night

Don’t you remember when you see my smile
The times we spent together in the sun
Don’t you remember, when you hear my voice
The times we held on
to each other
in the pouring rain

Am I a spirit disappearing in the dead of night
Or a memory fading from your mind

I’m just a stranger (Just a stranger)
Just a stranger

I’m just a stranger
In a crowded room
Look right through me
Like I’m far away

I try to touch you
But you’re not there
The warmth has faded
From your smile

Don’t you remember those days long ago
When laughter echoed through our lives
Don’t you remember yesterday
When tears flowed
from joy and sorrow
like the pouring rain

Am I a spirit disappearing in the dead of night
Or a memory fading from your mind

I’m just a stranger (Just a stranger)
Just a stranger

Don’t you remember when you see my smile
The times we spent together in the sun
Don’t you remeber yesterday
When we held each other
though joy and sorrow
and got through the rain

Am I a spirit disappearing in the dead of night
Or a memory fading from your mind

I’m just a stranger (Just a stranger)
Just a stranger

nice
I like the melody, nice vocals.
the distorted guitar playing country-ish chords reminded me a bit of one of my favourite bands, dinosaur jr.
organ a nice touch too.
enjoyed!

Dinosaur Jr. Rocks!
They were played constantly on the campus radio station when I was in college, so it probably soaked in a bit. I've always liked the mix of a little bit of raw edge with some contrasting smoothness.

Thanks for taking the time to listen.

Strange, Stranger, Strangest...
It's been so long since I've done much musically I kind of went back to the basics. Lots of crunchy guitar and morose lyrics. Such a happy combination... But, whatever works. :)

Hey Joe!
I like this - NY meets REM ....ummmm "REMNY"? Great to hear you with a new song Joe.
Love the wall of guitars and the way you keep the wash happening with the B3.
Touching words.
Peace,
Neil

Climbing the wall
You can't really tell it, but there are eight different guitar parts all kind of mixed together in there, though not all at any one time. The organ would have been the ninth, but I switched it at the last minute.

The lyrics definitely speak to a mood which I have not been completely unfamiliar with as of late.

Thanks for listening Neil and thanks for being such a great part of MJ here for the past five years!

Hopefully more where this one came from. Loved the wash of guitars and that solid sounding B3. Bravo vocals Joe.

Great!
First, the opening guitar slicks just caught me right away, such great (yet raw) melody! The song as a whole is a dream, the break "...I am a spirit..." is very refreshing. The keys/organ fits so well in. Nice drums arrangement as well. Love the back-up vocal towards the end, and think you could have used them all through. But, the guitar(s) man, wow! :) It's a little long, but it sounds live, like I am among an audience. And, when you have the audience with you, just keep playin'!
