After The Rain

Description
I have been working on a suite of pieces with the intent of celebrating some of the wonders of our amazing planet. “After The Rain” is based on a fairly simple piano etude I composed some years ago and that lent itself to a little embellishment. In searching for an appropriate photo or graphic to accompany this music, I had selected a number of generic nature scenes: sun-drenched landscape following rainfall, rainbows, rain water puddles on streets, dappled water drops listing in vibrant rose petals. THEN I found the photo (above) and the music suddenly seemed to all make sense. It is called, perhaps not coincidentally, “After The Rain.” It features Wendy Whelan and Jock Soto of the New York City Ballet. The photo is by Paul Kolnik (http://www.paulkolnik.com/home.html). Visit his site if you have a few minutes. He has done some amazing things. I hope you enjoy this new music.

Beautiful
I've always admired your piano work and here you give me even more things to admire.

This piece is very picturesque - I see my self standing on a green field, welcoming the morning sun through the cool, crisp summer air, with the smell of wet grass dancing in my nose.
Now, you're piece is far more beautiful than this description of mine, but you get my point :)

I absolutely love the opening piano/oboe (or is that an english horn?) line, as well as the flute line around the 2:20 mark.

However, I'm not really crazy about that rain sound at the beginning... it kinda sounds more like static than rain, which distracts a little bit in the very beginning.

But this is really beautiful work.

Paul...here we go again ....
.... first off I think you have captured the "wonders of our amazing planet" quiet majestically indeed. Can very easily see this as a backing to a visual ..... easily. It is very short but such a beauty. Many thanks for sharing this.

Refreshed
There's a lovely organic feeling to the timing throughout this piece. The string entry at 1:30 is uplifting, particularly with the accents from the trumpets. There's a beautiful open, delicate, and lush sensibility throughout, like all of life becoming more green and nourished with the soaking of the rain. You've clearly orchestrated and balanced the mix with great care and restraint.

One small nit amongst all of this glorious setting of the delights of your musical craftsmanship: the oboe at 1:07 cuts off a little abruptly for me. Other than that moment, this work is a slice of heaven.

Do you achieve your rubato through adjusting the timing in Logic, or do you adjust all the instruments to keep them in time with a lead instrument that you play, like the piano?

Many thanks Paul for another lovely gift,
Doug

Lovely piece.
The orchestration running under the piano part is really nice - not overwhelming. I love the flow. You are a master of this style, no doubt.

rain on the mind
i'm writing a rain piece right now too! this is beautiful. i was very much not expecting the crescendos but they are really moving, especially coming out of the serenity of the opening phrases. there were two things that felt out of place to me in the piece - the rain sounds were distracting to me and seemed to stop abruptly. Also, the trumpets at the big climax were very effective, but again felt out of place to me in the greater context of the song's feel. But overall, this is a gorgeous composition with a beautiful flow of emotion throughout. I can certainly imagine a dance to this.

Man...
... I love the sadness in your pieces. This is a 'beauty'-ful tune. My only nit is the sudden end of the rain sample in the beginning, a smoother fade out might have sounded better. Nonetheless, this is a masterpiece!
