Stone/Southern Boy

Description
This is another remake of an older song, this time one I've recorded and posted before, but my original files were lost in The Great Firewire Drive Crash of '06. It's actually two songs, one very short one smooshed together with a longer one. The whole thing comes in at about six and a half minutes.

Both songs were written at a time when I had just moved back home after being away almost 20 years. So many songs from that time kind of tied my sense of self and sense of place together. I've wanted to redo this one for a while, but just never really had the patience to sit down and do it. I've been working on this one a couple of months - a little bit here, a little bit there - until I finally just made myself sit down and do it the past few days.

The first tune, Stone, is pretty much the same as I did it back then. I dropped some of the vocal harmonies to give it a little more impact when I do use them. Southern Boy, on the other hand, is quite different. I sped it up quite a bit and changed it up some structurally. The lyrics are, more or less, the same, but I think I dropped a repeat of the chorus as well.

If you want to do the whole compare/contrast thing, the original can be found here.

This is my third tune to post in less than two weeks, which I usually don't do, but with the holidays coming up, I'm kind of clearing my slate so this may be the last tune I do for a little while...

... or then again, it may not be... Who knows...

Anyhoo, I hope you enjoy.

Stone

Sometimes I feel like I am
made of stone
But then the winter comes
and the cold winds blow
and the cracks
begin to show

Some times I feel like I am
flesh and bone
and my eyes see the world
for the very first time....

Southern Boy
©2005 Joseph Gurner

There is a place not far form here
I feel the Earth is part of me
wind and water take the world away
and I dance beneath the trees

There’s a feeling inside of me
like every thing is new and pure
The sky fades from blue to black
the stars never seemed so bright

I’m just a southern boy in the great big world
and sometimes I lose my way
But when I see the sky and feel the wind
I know where I belong

I’m just a southern boy in the great big world
and sometimes I lose my way
But when I see the sky and I feel the wind
I know where I belong

There is a time not long from now
where past and future meet
I stand forever as my feet take root
I reach my arms into the sky

I’m just a southern boy in the great big world
and sometimes I lose my way
But when I see the sky and feel the wind
I know where I belong

I’m just a southern boy in the great big world
and sometimes I lose my way
But when I see the sky and feel the wind
I know where I belong

I’m just a southern boy in the great big world
and sometimes I lose my way
But when I see the sky and feel the wind
I know where I belong

There’s a place not far from here
where I live forever
and time stands still
and everything feels new....

Love the lyrics on these combined songs
Some terrific guitar solos in this and the rest of the back tracks seemed to fit it perfectly.

Great bit of work here Joe, I love the subject and the feeling this leaves in me. I also love the job you did on the harmony parts, outstanding my friend

A TWO-FER
the two songs really compliment each other nicely. so nice that i just get carried away in the music. would of fit perfectly on N. Young's Zuma album.... if you were N. Young that is.

Denial mode
Some people here at MJ have postulated that I keep NY tied up in the basement and bring him out from time to time to work on a tune, but that's just silly....

*ahem*

dreamy, contemplative
a grand ballad, the two parts do fit together perfectly. Perhaps a little less rhythm guitar in the main verse, then add to it in the chorus to add more textural difference between sections. Overall, a very nice writing and performance.

Nice vocs/harmonies, and heartfelt lyrics. It is very reminiscent of Neil Young.

Sing a sad song
Good song, but that guitar smears the sound shut a bit. At some point I would replace it by a more open sound. Also maybe a bit more drum in the mix?

This really grows ..
.. you need to be patient with this one: I think your performance grows as the song progresses too. Only nits are (Vic mentioned one of them).. I know you generally favour the "chorused" distorted lead .. but I think for this the lead needs to be cleaner, more bite to be more expressive and less "washy" .. and a few of the very high notes came across a bit flat (intonation trouble?) to me. Vocals (especially the dubs) are very well done. Sad tune, but a good 'un. Thanks for re-visiting and sharing it Joseph.
