VINYL With Roxylee, Davisamerica, Ziti, Awigze, Jiguma

Description
Another one of those songs where you just want to pick up and fly away. But since we don't have wings, all we can do is find the tallest object and start climbing. This is a song about a pretty wretched community, but that's the kind of place blues are brewed. Some talented folk got together for this one. Roxy (Roxylee) sings a woeful harmony. Jack (Davisamerica) rips out a plaintive organ and drums. Fran (Ziti) plays a searing lead guitar. Andy's (Awigze) sax cries in this. It wouldn't be blue without that sax. Neil (Jiguma) came in and covered us all with a warm, but driving bass that pushed us up that mountainside. Hope you enjoy this old scratchy record. All graciously donated their tears for this one, so kick back and feel our pain. Peace. Terry

Oh yeah, Mr. Jack was the master mixer here. This was crafted on his wood burning tape recorder.

Lyrics
Bottomland Blues

I’m gonna climb up to a mountain top
And I’m leavin’ the blues behind
Just help yourself to my things if you want
I just need a little peace of mind

I’m gonna climb up where the skies are clear
The Devil can keep his lousy town
Gonna push right through those mean ol’ clouds
And I ain’t ever comin’ back down

It rained pretty hard, and the river rose up
It took out the turnips, and it took out the beans
The fence washed out, and the hog nearly drowned
And my house took to floatin’ downstream

But a man don’t complain in the bottomland towns
Don’t you ever hang a sorrowful head
If they think you’re weak you be stoned in the street
And they won’t let up till you’re dead

Whoa whoa whoa whoa
I just need a place to hide
Whoa whoa whoa whoa
Gonna climb right up that mountainside

You ain’t got a prayer in the bottomland towns
If you do, then you sure better yell
I don’t know if the Lord can hear you down there
You’re practically sittin’ on Hell

But I’m getting’ on out of this muddy ol’ bog
The mountain, she calls to me
She says “Come up here boy. Get away from that town
That ain’t how a life should be”

Whoa whoa whoa whoa
I just need a place to hide
Whoa whoa whoa whoa
Gonna climb right up that mountainside

Wow
Holy cow Terry, you guys did a hell of a job on this one.

Talk about the Who's Who of MJ, this one darn near has it all. Great, great lyrics, sung with a lot of feeling, and then you add Roxy 's wonderful, heart felt harmonies. And the band just keep on going on, with Ziti, Andy, Neil, and you all playing some killer lick.

Awesome song my friend, all of you. I love it.

oh yeah....

... and then some. This effing outrageous :-0 !

This is dripping with old classic blues ear sounds.... Gosh, everything is just a perfect groove. Terry... great vox, Roxy perfect harmony back ups... not an easy thing to do on a song like this. Andy... sax... right one a per usual! Ziti, you're scourching that fret board. An anchoring the dang thing is Neil on bass. Someone on organ... kudos.

cheers all,
D

A pleasure
to be invited to play on this Jack, Terry and co. Wonderful performances all round and a nice mix Jack.

I did a lot of collaborations with rtcooper (hope to do some more too), and what I loved about those - being a huuuge fan of The Band - was the feeling of somehow being re-connected to the "americana" side of the music of my younger days. Now that sort of music is not that easy to get involved in from way down here in Oz, but this tune (and the other songs I've done with Jack and Terry) gives me another avenue to play this style. I know it's blues, but the americana shines through in Terry's vocals and the lyrical content, and the terrific playing.

Thanks again everyone!
Neil

Sounds as
if "the band" were playing together for years. Just got to hang your head and sing whoa, whoa along with you. Vocals by Terry and Roxy are like honey. Fran and Neil are shoulder to shoulder scratching at the soul, while Andy and Jack grab what's left of the heart strings and pluck away. Successfully left me in a heap on the floor. Pretty powerful.

There is a house, in Texas, they call the house of Macjams blues
There's absolutely NOTHING not to love about this, really gets under your skin... let me just sink into this and revel in the music, roll in it until I'm covered in blues, mmmm.

What a stunning gathering of talent... excellent blues song and lyrics, luscious singing by T&R, superb musicianship on that sax, organ, bass, and lead lix.

You guys
ROCK. Your talents are immense, and I'm honored to get to sing the harmony. Jack, I had no idea you had to mix on a dinosaur machine. Next time I'll only send you my final tracks and spare you all that agony! The organ and drums are just right for the song. You're a genius. Terry, you're a superb lyricist and vocalist. It's a gift to be able to sing with you. Andy, the sax notes wail perfectly and plaintively. Fran;s guitar playing is killer superb. Neil's bass is, as always, seamless and perfect. Thank you all for letting me sing with you.

Hey, Roxy.
It's always great to sing with you. Really love what you did for this song. As for Jack's vintage recording equipment, I may have exaggerated that a bit. It wasn't actually a wood burning tape recorder. It was one of the newer ones that use kerosene. He succeeded in creating that scratchy old LP sound anyway. Looking forward to our next one Roxy. Peace. Terry

feelin your pain
Well, ok, I gotta say that I got this tune early on (pre-Ziti) and I noodled around with no place to rest... I just knew what Terry told me... I don't want blues, I want crying. Well. ok so I putzed around a bit and sent in the track, thinking that my part was over. Then along came another version with Fran's over the top newly and truly inspired guitar offering. Man, was I embarrassed. So, I asked Terry and Jack for another go at it. This is what great musicians do for good musicians... pulls them along and make them try to do better. One of these days, Z, we're gonna play live together. But until then, this is what we get. This song is unimaginable without Neil's rock steady part, keeping the boards nailed down and of course without Roxanne's soulfulness this song would float away. I never have figured out how Terry writes such amazing songs. If I had an ounce of that ability I would amaze myself. Jack's cat herding, drums and organ is sweet. What a crew! What a song. I am a blessed man for getting to putz around with such greatness.

......or as good without you Andy. Yeah, the taking two steps backward was my fault. Poor coordination. We know better now. What you did here is great, and I love that unison thing you and Fran do. I can feel my legs getting tight trudging up that mountainside there at the end. Looking forward to our next one. Terry

Headphones .....
I think. This band has been on the "virtual" road before and they are pure joy to listen to. Mark...the mix is "hot" and several reasons why...none being the result of the performances.... will just say frequences in one track certainly do affect other tracks .... but at the end of they day the "LP" feel of the master was pretty interesting and we made a call. I have Fran's guitar seared into my brain...and quiet happily I must say. I think his work here is stellar. Andy weaves magic .... and does it everytime. You can always give Andy anything and he will always amaze you. Roxy...well she is THE LADY of soulful blues. An angel with bluesy grit... Neil.... Mr. Porter always lays it down on bass ... working on a project with Neil is a 2fer ...great performance plus some of the best "technical" ears I know. And then there is Terry.... my brother we have been friends longer than either of us probably want to admit. We met because of music and from that first practice session I saw a very wise soul and extremely talented writer and performer. I still stand amazed.
So all I am very pleased to have been part of this session ...oh yes I am. Folks.... ya done good.

terry - i am SO a fan of your vocal style.
stellar embellishments from Fran, and Andy's horn is so handsome.
the break is wonderful - excellent teaming of guitar and sax.
Roxy's voice is creamy smooth - i wanted a little harmony with her at 1:17. maybe next time? jack - great job on the whacks n smacks, and keys were plaintive, indeed. neil - you're the glue, mister brother. your deep bass grounds this but good. killer kollaboration!
