Trish's Song

Description
This is something that I've been kicking around since 1987-88. It stared out as just me fiddling around on my bass, working on some more melodic bass parts when I struck on the opening riff. My best friend at the time Trish heard it and said she liked it and asked me that if I ever made it into a song, make it her song. So, over the years, I worked on doing just that.

It's a bit different in that it's a piece for two basses. The "bass" line has stayed pretty much the same over the years, but the melody "bass line" has changed over and over again. This is more like what I did originally. At least I think it is. That was 20 or so years ago, so I could be wrong. This is a shorter version of the tune, really just omitting some repeating parts that weren't really necessary. I actually recorded the tracks maybe a year or so ago and I quickly discovered that it's kind of hard to satisfactorily mix two bass lines, even when they're playing in different octaves. This mix ain't perfect, but it's as good as I'm going to get it.

As for the song, to me, it's a perfect musical representation of my friend. It's dark, moody and somewhat brooding, but it has a beauty and lightness about it. I haven't seen my friend on almost 20 years and she's never heard the completed work, but, maybe somehow, somewhere, she'll come across it one day and finally get to hear her song.

Double bass eh ;)
Gotta love a song with 2 basses. Nice harmonic stuff going on here Joseph. I remember seeing a trio once at a local jazz festival that was made up of three bass players - nothing else. I guess your band training comes out in the arrangement here.
Cool post.

Nice structure,
and some very cool Bass work Joseph. This has something that, as Jack said, is worth exploring. Very nice playing my friend. Normally don't think of a Bass as a lead instrument, but in this case it really works well.

Beautifully done my friend,

Ed
