Loveless & Dead

Description
This is a song about how splitting up can really mash up your head (especially when the other person moves on with seeming ease). i deliberately kept this one clean and simple; acoustic guitar, lead vocal and some harmony.

Lyrics
The deal is done, a new chapter’s begun
And we’re sitting outside in this pantechnicon
The neighbours wave and you say goodbye
But all I want to do is get out and cry
And turn the clocks right back to another time

And I always thought we were part of the same place
Flying through time, hands that turn on a clock-face
All good things seemed to be within range
But it just goes to show how people can change
And turn into all the things you never liked about your parents
Now isn’t that strange

And I followed you blindly into this idyll that you created in your head
And it all came back to remind me that everything about us was loveless and dead
Loveless and dead

You left town in search of some worthy career
But the lack of confidence meant that I stayed here
And the loneliness kept me constantly in touch.
But I always got the feeling you didn’t miss me that much
Empty mailbox, empty days, empty glass of soda and scotch

And I tried hard to put it all behind me
wipe the slate clean and move on with my life
And I sent cards but I knew you’d never come to find me
And when you didn’t, it cut like a knife

And what i did, it made no sense, had no reason or rhyme
And the scene comes back to haunt us both, time after time
And what I did, I did as someone out of his mind
So maybe "forgive and forget" is too much to hope for this time
Maybe too much this time

And I followed you blindly into this idyll that you created in your head
And it all came back to remind me that everything about us was loveless and dead
loveless and dead.
You’re flying....you’re flying....

Loveless & Dead
Nice song - well written. To me, a cross between John Mayer and Simon and Garfunkle, yet still unique. I was getting a bit of distortion through my speakers on a couple of points with your vocals - not sure if it is my system or yours. But very nice work - thanks.

I'll admit it. I had to look up idyll. Great guitar sound. A smooth percussive sound with a lot of definition. Are they old strings? Great lead vocal (although it does clip my speakers in a few places). I like the way you jump up the octave near the end. Your voice just blossoms. Nice harmonies. The oooo's are particularly nice. Great lyrics full of clear imagery and compelling inferences ("empty glass of soda and scotch"= what a drunk!). Man, you are the songwriter I aspire to be.

Your such a professional talent! Your vocals are just great. Guitar backup rock steady and just enough for backuping.

A sad song really. And btw, I know the feeling you talk about. It's plainly terrible.

typically great..
..stuff here. It really speaks to the strength of the writing that you manage to establish a setting, and sense of narrative development with such a minimal arrangement, it really makes each note matter. Although I'd like to hear your vocals with less chorus on them; at times the effect dampens the impact of the vocal line.

a man and his guitar
what more does one need to write a brilliant song. Glad that you kept it clean and simple. Excellent songwriting, mate. Such a very confident and solid performance. Not so sure about the phaser effect on the vocals, I'd like to hear them clean all the way, especially for this kind of song. Anyway, a delicatesse to cherish. Big bravo!

This is
so heartfelt; the sensitivity can really be felt in the song. The sadness is portrayed very well. I realy liked the harmonies at around 3:00 and I also like the aggresiveness and attack in the song towards the end. The song felt like it needed that build and you did it very well.

Your Amerglish is getting pretty good; I could understand pretty much every word. You know this is the song that makes people melt. But I'm not going to melt damnit!...

Still not melting...

Still not melting...

OK so I fricking melted!

Great song Julian!

A real
"life in a Northern Town" vibe in places - I loved that song! Fantastic production - beautifully clean acoustic and nicely recorded vocals (although too much reverb on the vox for my taste). Some voice you have there, and a great set of lyrics too. Apart from that reverb (a personal taste thing), I love this.

On a different note, I see in your bio that you stayed at Dion's place in SF - we're hoping to do the same one day.

Cheers from Oz,
Neil

title
The title sounded like a manic street preachers song so I thought I was going to hear a rant about culture, alienation, boredom and despair :-)
No chance.
Anyway, a lovely song to start this sunny monday morning.
I think it's quite brave to do something so stripped down.
All my quite songs I end up chucking the kitchen sink in and possibly spoiling it.
Great playing and singing..though there is a slight bit of 'clipping' in the middle...and all of us were thinking it was their stereos.
Good harmonies too.
BTW, you seem to have isolated that high pitched sound that was on some of your previous recordings.
Anyway, enjoyed
cheers

What'a pantechnicon?
For that matter, what's with people using all these fancy words in their songs lately? Makes me think I should listen with a dictionary, or have Google Translate transform the lyrics to "Fourth Grade Level."

Your voice and playing are unstrained and heartfelt in this song.

Personally, I like the vocal effects here and there. The "dead" on "loveless and dead" that turns into "ooos" is really effective to this humble listener.

The harmonies on the "empties" also hit just right. And "forgive and forget..."

Overall, you've created a lovely mood here, if quite a sad one. For some reason, the soulless pop lover in me craves more repetition in the structure and melody. But that's probably why I don't know words like "pantechnicon" either.

I think there is a fine line between simplicity and minimalism - I'd say this is complex but minimal and yet you manage to make it sound like its quite a simple tune to play though is actually quite difficult to pull off.Dripping with emotion, and warmth of heart.Very well done.I'm no stranger to split-ups too - I left Brighton cos of a split and went cycling along the south coast for 4 months with just an accordian - just to try and clear my head of it all.Got a bit dangerous at times.
Theres a lil bit of crackling on the mic her and there but nothing to worry about - lovely harmonies. Thanks,

Rich

Top notch composer/performer
Only nit I'd have is that the engineering needs some oversight. On this song I heard some distortion and clipping here and there. The last song there was a high pitched tone that gated in and out.

Really quite a remarkable talent Julian.

heartfelt
Great tune of an experience that many have experienced at some time in our life. When your in the middle of it all, just seems like there's no relief and the kind words from friends assuring us that time will heal all, ring empty.

Down the road we are stronger and wiser from the experience and we learn, that our best friend is our self. We have to turn inwards and give ourselves a hug.

Just love your voice and the honesty in which your lyrics, come from the heart. A very reflective song, which could give many a listener, a soothing salve for the wounded heart. Nice.

Beautiful song Julian. Your voice is awsome. The lyrics are so touching and heartfelt. I love the arrangement with just acoustic guitar and some harmony.

man oh man,
it was a week ago or something that I tried commenting and faving this tune but MJs wasn't letting me for some reason. Anyway, finally I made it back and just like leftover stew, it's even better a few days later. This tune hit me on so many levels both musically and emotionally. I love the tightness of your vocals. Great tune. Great performance. Great harmonies. You're great! Don't know if anyone else mentioned it (I admit I didn't read all 5000 comments) but you have a hight frequency thing going on, more noticeable in the right channel. But that is neither here nor there with a tune as good as this. Sorry about the split but thanks for the song!

Comparing this to the later remix...
I never heard this before, just the the remix, which I love. I notice a strong chorus effect on the lead and some of the background vocals here that -- knowing Brian Delaney -- aren't in the remix... but I gotta go re-listen. It's a great song in any mix iteration, really just amazing.

glad i popped by..
this is amazing, the sound of the guitar strum is perfectly balanced between warmth, tonality and the plucking of the strings. Something i find so hard to do. It's all about the vocals on this one though. Like a cross between Alexi murdoch and James Tayor, but with it's own edgy thing going on, you nail it.
Really, pleased to have downloaded and fav'd this, it's extremely relatable yet well thought out and un-cliched (is that a word?!) in it's approach. Thanks,

mz

Howdy. I actually came to tell you of a coincidence that just happened. I was watching Still Crazy looking out for a friend (Matthew Finney who played young Brian) and got two for the price of one, Mr. Goldblatt!

And so I typed Hackneybloke and stumbled across this lovely song. Grim subject, great music. Not surprising someone voted it their number one song of, er, last year.

Hope to see you soon

all the best
