Lyrics
Mad Hatter
©2010 Neil Porter

I’ve been watching how you wear your skin
I’ve been checking out the state you’re in
I’ve been waiting ‘til you drop your guard
Looking out for the Queen of Hearts

Mad Hatter – Tea Party
Mad Hatter – Tea Party

I’ve been waiting for the coin to drop
I’ve been waiting for the fun to stop
I’ve been thinking there’s no end to this
Watch you swim in your ignorant bliss

Mad Hatter – Tea Party
Mad Hatter – Tea Party

“Rite me a sine” and show me the way
My Cheshire smile might give the game away

I’ve been watching as you drain your glass
I’ve been waiting for this phase to pass
Can’t believe that you can look so cool
Hanging out with all those tea party fools?

Mad Hatter – Tea Party
Mad Hatter – Tea Party

Hi Neil
I really like the tone of your Telecaster - so clean and crisp and FULL sounding. You employ some unusual chord changes in this tune - your harmonies sound nice and your lyrics are interesting. A very enjoyable song to listen to as I wind down this Monday evening.

Thanks for having a listen - I've been a bit distracted from MJ lately and am glad to be able to post something again. I love the Tele sounds I get in Logic, and am close to being able to replicate them live on my Vox VT30 amp, which has been a real effort, but worth it.
Cheers,
Neil

I'm with sig, great guitar tones that shine through the crystal clear mix. Love the shuffle feel. This has a nice live band feel.

Tea Party Fools
Is this hidden political satire? I love the Madder Hatter. I actually own a giant grey top hat in his honor. I dig the arrangement, the loose hoarse way it all swings. A throwback feel. Nice track, thanks for sharing.

Thanks for listening Tobin
I'd seen the new Alice film and was pondering a set of photos I'd seen about the Tea Party. I didn't think it was all that hidden ;) From the same team that brought you "Throw Your Shoes". This recording was done as a demo for the band, hence the roughness.
Glad you enjoyed it.

love it
A definite song for the times.

Great crisp tele-tones of your own, but something T-Petty-ish about the overall sound here.

Nice one.

Sassy indeed!
Neil, this is so cool. The pace and feel of song, the great sound on your guitar. And the the fun, somewhat cryptic lyrics make the whole thing a jazzy and somewhat funky song. And I'm beginning to think you have a secret crush on that girl... can't get her off of your mind! ;-)

Cool swing!
Very nice Neil. I love the little delays you have on some of the vocals - how'd you do that? Great mix, [as we'd expect] and the bass just rocks!

Cheers Dave
The delay is just a cut and paste into a second track - nothing clever at all ;) The bass is pretty loose, but it kind of makes up for the very straight kit track. Thanks for the listen.

Glad you enjoyed it. About time I posted something - band duties and a long term virus have kept me pretty well occupied I'm afraid.

The second code
I feel that the second code feature.
I think that this harmony forms the impression of the tune.

The composition of the guitar is also wonderful.

hats off to ya
i like the push and pull feel of the music in the lyric sections, adds a nice tension.

the chorus & bridge have a nice country/petty rock. i should also mention the tele riff lines (and have a great full bag of them) are excellent.

demented opening - love it

very Grateful in many ways

that occasional echo on the vocals on the third is captivating - in a very scrunch-your-toes-on-the-linoleum-and-swear-its-moving way

thank you sir

Hatters!
Clever Jab at us Righties Neil, haha! Very cool tune, really like guitar tones, very jazzy and clear, and I like the groovy vibe to the chords in this tune also. Yeah, too bad this movement has been Co-opted by the Neo-Con real "Mad Hatters",it might have turned out differently. Sigh...oh well. The Jaberwocky's days are numbered, 2012 is just around the corner! LOL!

Pro
Every new song of yours is proving your pro status more and more. This one is pretty straightforward and traditional, but your distinctive velvet voice gives it the absolute Jiguma touch, recognizable from the other side of the globe. And somehow, sometimes... I'd love to see you leaving that safe path for one moment.

Challenge taken Walt!
Glad you enjoyed the tune (despite the dreaded rhyming couplets!). You have put into words something that has been bugging me also of late - that I've been a little stuck on a simpler, rockier path recently It's all about having a live band who don't exactly fit with my softer, more off-beat side - your comment made me realise I've been writing for them rather than me lately. Mad Hatter is about 6 months old - your comment also made me realise how little new stuff I've written and recorded in the past 6 months. I'm hoping I can change that.
Cheers from Oz Walt, and thanks.

you take my comment the way it was meant, Neil. And you know how much I appreciate and value your honesty as well when it comes to my music (although for 'lurking upon my shoulder' reasons I could not react properly on my song page). Old music chaps grow with each other :-)

Tea time!
Nice loose feel on those guitars bro.

A fine bit of head-boppin'/toe-tapping tuneage; very much in the spirit of classic Grateful Dead. (At least, to MY ears!)

Excellent post Neil!

Plenty
of space in this song Neil and a nice ambling Jazzy feel to it with a touch of the zany and it all comes across great with your excellent musicianship and vocals.... would Sarah be a small person quite close to you and the inspiration behind the song? If so... it worked. Regards M

damned good for a one-man band, nice crisp sound production and a wacky character for the subject can't go wrong in my book.It is a cracker, which should be buttered lightly cheese added and consumed with some tea.........nice one Neil.

I had to take my glasses off....
...to focus on that face in the 'Alice' chair... Took me a dull witted moment, Neil....

It's good and inspiring when those who spot madness call it as they see it...

My only nitlets with this tune are what seem to be small hiccups in the groove, sometimes between bass and drums and sometimes keeping the vocals locked to the bass and drums....

I like the harmonized lines on the Telecaster....

Guitars rule!
Besides the fun "Alice meets today's crazy world" lyrics, the mix, the mood take me back to a certain place/time when guitars ruled the earth. (Love the harmonics between all your parts, down to the ending dual-lead. If you have this kind of loose groove in the studio, I can only imagine what you'd do in a live jam. This tune fits my guitar "Jones" like a glove. Thanks for the download, Neil.

Thanks for the very kind comment. There's a band version on our new CD to be released later in the week. Some of the "off kilter" was a little too off perhaps - see Ed's comment - but I've fixed glitches for the band version. I didn't mind the movie, but I can't stand the Party.
