Description
Dick says:

If ever we picked the wrong time for a collab ;-) ….... Mark and I have both been absolutely rammed with work over the past few months and neither of us really had time for this. I'd do bits every now and again whenever I had a few spare moments so the song was put together like a jigsaw designed by committee.

I spent a week on the Normandy coast this summer and visited the beaches and some of the cemeteries, particularly the American Military cemetery (my picture above). What got to me most of all was the ages of the dead. Young kids, probably never even got to fire at the enemy. The only thing you can say in its favour is that at least they knew what they were fighting for. The “enemy” is no longer so easily identifiable.........

I had the original idea, Mark came up with the main riff (that I then did to death ;-) ) . I threw some lyrics at Mark and he came back with some more and some great ideas for development of the song. It was great to work with Mark but it's real pity that neither of us had time to really explore what we could have done, but given the circumstances I'm pleased we did as much as we could. Hopefully we'll find time in the future to work on something else and be a bit more focused. At least we had some great Skype conversations :-)

Alan Gentle (who wrote the lyrics for Big Dog) helped me out on the verses I wrote. I told my old mate Graham Hodges (who wrote the words for Top Man) about the project and he threw in a Shakespearian reference to endless winter and then came up with some words as well.

Mark played lead guitar and put some extra vocals in there as well.

The whole thing needs a good polish but neither of us have the time to do it so here it is warts and all :-)

Lyrics: Alan Gentle, Grahame Hodges, Mark and me

Mark says (and he's too modest)

I have long respected Dick's musical abilities. When the chance came to work with him I was like "alright!!!" but then life came along and decided to make things difficult... Dick did the heavy lifting on this tune. We talked initially on skype about where we wanted to go. I was thinking some kind of surf tune but Dick told me about how much the war graveyards affected him during a recent vacation and he convinced me that "summer" didn't mean "sun and surf". Dick's music always has a message and the lyrics he began to pound out certainly tell a story. We bounced them back and forth a bit. I laid down a rough guitar track and he took it from there and laid out the entire song based on that track and his lyrics. Dick brought in a ton of dynamics and additions to the tune... A few days ago he sent me his rough draft and said add whatever I felt. Well dang... the thing was almost done... So I did some backup vocals, a little guitar but really Dick is the artist here everyone!

Dick thanks for working with me! I hope to do it again real soon! Hopefully life for both of us will calm down.

Summer's Lease

Summer of 1944
A Norman beach, forbidding shore
Run from the guns and run some more
At least they knew what they were fighting for

A young man died
Never fired his gun
A mother cried
at what they'd done
How could they take away her son
At least she knew what they were fighting for

Longest winter, longest ever
Grey skies mean it's summer never
Grey dawn grey seas floating waiting
Winter's cold light summer hating

Summer's here but winter's staying
Spring is gone, autumn's delaying
Summer's lease is all too short
Winter's nothing to report

They'll sell a bullet with your name
They're saving you a cross
They can take the profit
And you can take the loss

Jungle wars, new ways to fight
Hidden traps and bamboo spikes
Orange throws a deadly light
And no one knew what they were fighting for

A crowded train, the 8:01
standing room the seats have gone
Easy meat for rucksack bombs
They think they know what they're fighting for

Kudos
for the different angle on the summer theme.
You did that riff to death but it's so good it deserves a song to be built around it.
Very cool groove that had me hooked as soon as the 2nd verse kicked in. The keys section is a nice change but the guitars are killer. When the solo sneaks in it sounds so rich.
Great song and you wouldn't know you struggled for time.
Oh and excellent idea to end on
DWL said 2497 days ago (August 24th, 2010)
Thanks Ted
Summer in Normandy in 1944 was not pleasant place to be so it was good to take a different view.

The song was all a bit of a mish mash really so I'm pleased it worked out as well as it did.

I love that riff and the guitars sound wonderful, some great lyrics and the vocals are superb Dick, great singing. I like the breaks in there with the keys and a great rhythm to this song.
Great lead guitar Mark and I really love this, great stuff! D/L

Summer's Lease with Mark Holbrook
Such a cool Big Country vibe (I loved that band). Great riff. I love how it went all British invasion in the middle. There's also a cool Pink Floyd The Wall vibe. Who would have expected a D Day song as part of the Summer Collabs? But man oh man does it work.

Now there's something I never thought of. Bugger it I could really have pushed that!

Pink Floyd wasn't conscious but after I did it I realised where I'd got it from...

Nice to be different

Kind of summer of love meets the error of terrorism. Great song with a different take of summer vs winter. Loved the solos...know what you mean about life intruding...I too was despairing finishing...but glad you guys got this pulled together and posted.

Love the ...
ending... beginning and middle too! T totally and surprising direction that you have taken this collaborative challenge.. It makes it stand on it's own. Very wonderful matchup of collaborators and very cool that Allan and Grahame were interested and participated. I saw this post earlier today and was all giddy that I was to get firsties, but I guess you pulled it and reposted later.

Very rich...
...collaboration, I used to listen to REM''s "Beachball" endlessly and this reminded me of that somehow, in a very good way. I also think the lyrics are very well crafted (I'll need some of that committee to help me out!); "Jungle wars, new ways to fight. Hidden traps and bamboo spikes." Graceful writing, thanks for the share guys. Nice job.

Wow
Best of the breed as far as I'm concerned.

Love the music, but the lyrics and vocals sells the song. And what a song it is. I sometimes wonder if anyone remembers the boys who died at Normandy, and "What they were fighting for". I thank you for this wonderful tribute to them, Both of you.

Fantastic song you two, I love it.

Maybe it's age or something but seeing those acres of white headstones where the dates of birth were in the middle 1930s was a real shock. You know how many young men on all sides (and the German cemeteries are no less moving) lost their lives but the sheer scale of the cemeteries was a sobering experience.

I know it wasn't very summer like but then again it wasn't summer like for those guys either.

A very different summer--and guys, you did an extremely fine job crafting and performing this song. The lyric's story, the music and performance (you did a fine job singing Dick--very impressive!), the production--all worth the extra wait. Congratulations to you all for this one!

I'm not sure where that came from. Just one of those ideas that sort of pop into your head.

I wish could work out how I got the guitar sound as I tweaked a set patch on the Boss GT8 and then forgot I'd done it and switched off the unit without noting what I'd done or saving the patch.

Thanks for the listen

Strangely enough, I was almost on the point of giving up as I wasn't happy at how it was turning out, it was too formulaic. That's a consequence of it being developed in dribs and drabs.

I'm pleased now I stuck with it and pushed poor old Mark to distraction in the process ;-)

Serious Summer
Such an interesting contrast to some of the other more light-hearted submission. But this still does it for me. Actually reminds me of an old British band called "Magnum" Lryics and over all epic nature of the music remind me of that group. There is some deep emotion and and I love such an extensive and complete sounding song. Very nice. Glad you guys were able to squeeze this in with your hectic schedules. Love the penny whistle ending, very appropriate.

Vietnam summers (or any time of year) could not have been much fun during the dark days of the 60s. Summer is many things but standing on those beaches in June 1944 was no holiday.

Summer's Lease
Like that riff, and that crunchy-delay-reverb tone. The bridge is a nice change of pace.
Cool lead breaks. Good message - the hate is a constant, but the justifications change.
Summers Lease is a Shakespearean reference as well from "Shall I Compare Thee To A Summers' Day"

Good 'un gents

Fair amount of DWL I hear in this- as an anti-war and thought provoking song it's marvelous, not quite my idea of a summer song (where's the sun & surf guys? lol ;o)). It's really nice arrangement with lots of excellent sub-sections, all the performances are very good (as you said perhaps some more polishing on the production but pfft. It got me thinking more xmas of the ilk of "pipes of peace" and "stop the cavalry".

Great song, - I like songs like this not only because it's a good song but it also reminds us of things we really shouldn't ever forget. I have also visited that part of Normandy. What a dreadful waste of life all because of one arsehole and a handful of simpletons. Great work Dick.

it's a shame you both didn't have the time to complete this to the level you wanted because it's a gem. excellent riff to start it all off. i would have found a preceding line each time to rhyme with 'fighting for'....but that's just me.
great mix and great lead guitar. at first i thought i was hearing a political message to something that reminded me of 'land down under'...which was all a bit incongruous....but i soon got over that. loved the pipe outro...very war poets. well done you two....and stop working too hard....i mean really.

Excellent collab!
A very UK sound here, especially in the "Summer's here but winter's staying" part. Performances and writing all excellent. I would probably have liked to hear a little more "sparkle" on the final mix - it seems just a tad flatter than I think you'd normally do Dick.
Overall a really satisfying listen though - no quibbles of any merit ;)

No, I was well out of my comfort zone on the singing and couldn't do much with my voice unfortunately (which was noted below) and the whole thing felt rather flat. As much to do with the fact I wasn't happy with the song overall anyway but it all turned out OK in the end!

Fabulous
Having been away from MJ for a while, I'm enjoying this in its own right, without thinking of it in terms of the theme, and think it's really terrific. I agree with the influences people have mentioned in the comments and think one of the more interesting things about the song is how it zooms around in time, in different sections. I would so dig hearing a version with the Big Country influence turned up, or just a Big Country-influenced song by you guys together. That would rule.

I agree with Neil that the mix is a little flat and I actually hear that most in the vocal track. This is one to put on your album, so definitely worth going back and tweaking a bit.

I like the way you tie the lyrics back to the present, reminds me of Sting's, 'Children's Crusade'.

but I wish I could do something about those vocals...

Originally my idea was to highlight important summer dates in various wars and show how the reasons for fighting became more blurred in modern times but I ended up with a dozen verses and had to cut it down somewhat.

I must think about that Big Country thing as I never heard that in there but it's something for the future.

Thanks for the detailed comments!

Psychedelic
War protest vibe going in full effect here. Very cool tune. I second the Pink Floyd comment (older Floyd though). Very Gilmouresque guitar tone and the british accent on the vocals top it off. Very catchy hook, love the trippy part with the keyboard after the chorus. It is a bit dull on the top end, but it sounds like he frequencies are there, just not maximized. Enjoyed this one!

Touch of 10cc
...at times, with a distinct touch of David Gilmour guitar lending a dark shadow to the landscape.

I particularly love the idea of framing summer in such an unusual, rarely-touched-on framework. The sweet, easy keyboards grow poignant and sad as the time moves forward... the soldiers who lived on to grow old, remembering their lost friends and watching the wars continue with new names, new flags... or perhaps no flags at all. And still the summers come and go.

Very brave song, and very well done.

Revisiting the Summer of 1944
I never commented on this song last summer, but I have the tune on my iPod.

First of all, I appreciate the unusual approach you took to a Summertime song. That's really outside thinking. It's really bold story telling and the music intensifies the story.

Another great work from the 2 4 Summer challenge!

Ironic, Isn't It?
How Human Nature can be so... Inhuman.

Nice work, Dick and Mark... this powerful song marches on with the deliberate cadence of all those lost souls who marched to their deaths... for what? Greed and power. ;)
