Lyrics
dreams hold us together, waking splits us apart
once we were light as a feather, now we’re heavy of heart
don’t give me answers, won’t give me no time
too many second chances, too much wasted time

love lasting forever, love aimless and blind
one more empty endeavour, one more life to unwind
don’t know what this is, can’t make any sense
too many broken kisses, too little recompense

I’m a room in your hotel life. call in soon at your hotel life

you’re looking for another door that opens
on a new world you’ve never seen
but in the race to cut and chase
you miss the places that are lying in between
you say you’re sorry but absolution’s all you desire
when evening comes around there’s someone that you’ve found
who’s waiting to put their hands into your fire

dreams held us together, waking split us apart
you drifted off like a feather, into some other heart
gave me no answers, you spared me no time
I give you second chances, I get wasted time

I’m a room in your hotel life, call in soon at your hotel life
I’m a room in your hotel life, single room in your single life

HOTEL LIFE W/Awigze
I hit download first. Then I hit play. I knew I would want it on my iPod. I'm digging the Sade type groove and jazzy chord vamp out from. Nice acoustic lead in the intro. You know I think you're rather under appreciated around here as a guitarist. We all think of Julian as a singer/songwriter. But your guitar playing is solid.

As always, great vocal and lyrics. Nice falsetto in the chorus. Nice harmony in the bridge.

As always stellar production and mix. And nice touch bringing Andy along. He captures the vibe of this perfectly.

sultry
clean - as in "From the Beginning" by emerson lake and palmer - from their "Trilogy L.P. . . similar mood - yes -
good smooth vocals to match - these are two refreshing velvet sax solos in the middle and at the end - sultry - long but never boring . . . pure woody vocals - with the sweet guitar solo too at the beginning - and right-on falsetto - reflecting an undisturbed situation - parallel vocals harmonies are tight - unexpected treat with different new chords strumming along at the four minute mark . . ' liking it all . . .

Quite brilliant
Quality just oozes out of this.

Your vocals are, as always, exceptional and the lyrics simply a cut above above the ordinary.

Why aren't you more famous?

The clarity and timbre of your voice make me envious and the touches and production you put into this are flawless. Holy #($&*#&@! Andy's sax solo is indeed haunting and just the right touch here. a 7 minute song?
I swear it seemed too short, that in itself is an amazing feat, julian, dude, you got skills my friend, every time I hear a new post from you it makes me want to raise my game, very inspiring to hear such a talented hardworking singer/songwriter/musician at the top of their game.
The lyrics are stellar, vocals perfect, harmonies incredible, by far the best I've heard here, your guitar playing is spot on, even getting Andy to lay down that sax was brilliant!. Perfect percussion! Your choice of structure with that long signature julian bridge, is genius.
And I understand where my good friend Charles is coming from but knowing you I bet you even intentionally left the listener wanting more of that chorus hook, absolutely brilliant! This and your last 2 posts are 3 of my very favorite songs on planet Earth! Well done mate! :-)

room service
Very smooth and mellow.
I like the way you 'split' the percussion up rather than have a straight forward drum beat going through.
You seem to be getting more confident in your songwriting and pushing into new areas...not saying your previous stuff is rubbish..this just feels like you have a better idea what it is you want to do, what to write and how to put it all down.
The sax is great by the way
And vocals very good too
cheers

Great song, Julian. Excellent vocal performance and I really like the sophistication of your lyrics. Andy's sax is soulful, and is just right in this piece. There is nothing that needs fixin - if I were producing this I would probably create more buildup starting in the second verse, and leading up to your bridge - but that is my style - yours is to create spacious beauty that is wonderful all on its own - your songs don't need all the bells and whistles to sound great. In other words, you choose quality over quantity - a special gift indeed. Much enjoyed - thanks!

You do this folk/jazz/pop genre so damned well. Fab vocal performance. So many different colors, nuances.

Such smart, musical and satisfying songwriting, too. Love the gear shift to bridge and then soulful/sultry return to verse.

When you get a record deal and record this with a bigger budget, you might think of adding another color on 2nd verse--Hammond B3, bowed bass, etc.

Totally pro recording, too. Are you still working at home?

Vocal is wonderful!
You have a vocal quality that is so comfortable and so clear. I just thoroughly enjoyed listening to your performance. The instrumental backing is so restrained, too, and so the lyrics are able to come through perfectly. There's always a tendency to over-produce/over-orchestrate and you have resisted it bravely. The results are a beautifully-fashioned song with poignant lyrics and a polished, comfortable arrangement and performance. So nice.

Ok Julian
You are getting terrific guitar tone. What is your gear list if I might be so bold?

I really really really like the authority in your vocals on this one. That is excellent. It is nice that you only use vibrato when necessary. I guess that must come with experience.

Andy's sax work is really clear and awesome in this.

Fantastic song and easily my favorite of yours.

Writing while listening first time

Realy cool instrumental intro .. wow that acoustic guitar is nice .. and here comes vocals .. oh yes, you still have that great voice! ... wow sax, that one is great!! .. sunds like second verse comes here .. would like the if backing instruments would raise in intensity just a bit here .. and wow that's great those high vocals, so smooth and nice (though still would like backing guitar to keep up with the intensity) and all the voices .. wow this is nice .. a bit of of CSN here .. wow this song is alltogether just great! highly professional .. just klicked download and three hearts ... only nitpick is that the backing guitar sounds a bit dead, looped isn't it?

Hotel limbo
Excellent clarity. Love the bright ac gtr sound, the light hand percussion groove. The unexpected lines on the sax gives the track a dreamy sound (not just the reverb, but the actually notes played); kudos to Andy. (During the middle of the piece, I wanted a recurrence of the sax, maybe during the backing vocal section, but when the sax returned for the outro I was satisfied.)

I definitely can relate to the sense of hotel limbo, the floating displaced feeling, not recalling what city, what neighborhood surrounds. Nice idea for a conceptual metaphor. (As you seem to write about loneliness a lot, this iteration is more compelling, the way it nips at the edges of dream, expectation, alienation, and desire for a new dimension to live a different life. All well done.

I thought the lead vocals were a smidgen too loud in the mix (listening on a laptop). And some of the backing vocals were a tad pitchy, but nothing objectionable.

Really good track. By far my fav of yours, as a song, arrangement and as a mix. The lyrics and audio conceptual correlation is superb. Really nice. Thanks for asking me to listen in. And thanks for sharing this fine piece.

Julian
Thanks loads for inviting me along for this great song. We discussed a time or two via email that this song has something special... something everyone can relate too, feel, identify with. And such is life to where I can relate to this as well... The way you express the angst in tone, timbre, feel and instruments surpasses the lyrics and balances each word to render out it's depth of meaning. My apologies for not being here for the debut, but I was blissfully off the grid in The Sacramento Mountains. However, the song was on my little ipod and rescued me more than once from the dullness of a 10 hour drive... one way

Not very often - just often enough to keep on visiting this site for more than 5 years now - these kind of brilliant gems pop up on MJ. So glad I didn't miss this particular one. Superb
A really excellent song that allows itself the time to breathe...or perhaps it's rather more of a sigh. It's really crucial that a song like this has the right lyrics to make it work. It's a sophisticated song and the "I'm a room in your hotel life" line works so well. A great arrangement and flawless performance. To paraphrase Dolly Parton...it takes a lot of work to sound this relaxed. An absolute pleasure listening to this song. Tom

Julian, that first lyric line crystalizes the mood the musical intro establishes and carries the "show." Again, your metaphoric vocal imagery is unique and your voice is all-pro. Lovely Moody Jazzy
It's all of these things.

A terrific intimate performance, made even better with Andy's sax work. Although I can certainly understand people hearing some elements of James Taylor and Jack Johnson in your personal style, I would say that my ears tell me you've found your own voice and are very comfortable in it.

Very nicely done, Julian and Andy.

p.s. --- So I see in your Artist Info that Dion turned you onto MJ. I just knew he wasn't all bad. lol He's a good man and a kind-hearted soul. ;)

late to the party here..
.. because this one took me a fair few listens to get into. The pacing and delivery is certainly a lot more relaxed and sedate than most of your stuff, but it works well. Especially in the "I'm a roooooooooom..." part. Harmonically I can hear a few echoes of Loveless & Dead in here, but the change in tone and attitude really sets it apart. Nice work!

Quality stuff
Great songwriting and vocals - I'd say 'as usual', but every successful effort like this is a solid achievement. I really like the guitars and sax solo as well. The sparse percussion works, and when you come out with your CD the drums I would record those live. Everything blends well here and enhances the mood. Makes a fairly long song seem very short!

Great song, great lyrics, top-notch vocals as expected, and Andy's sax adding a wonderful soulful flavour - what was not to like. No wonder so many MJ'ers have visited here. DL'ed! Take care, Peter

Great track Julian!
Lovely acoustic sound, terrific vocal and an all-round excellent song. Beautiful sax Andy. Glad I followed the link on James' version.
Better late than never I guess.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Just found this one
What a beautiful song. I get a Michael Franks sort of vibe to this one - relaxed, reflective, remarkable. Languid sax solo. Excellent writing and performance. Thanks for the download!
