particledots v/s ic42 (8 chords)

Description
ParticleDots and ic42 are a pair of personalities prone to experimentation. A collaborative idea was recently concocted between these two, and they chose to impose some wildly unusual and unpredictable rules on each other for composition.

After the initial background discussion about how to proceed the context for the basic rules was established - particledots insisted that a 'system' be applied (and maybe re-applied many times in different ways) to whatever work was to be done, ic42 requested that particledots provide 8 chords for him to mutate. Then the work began.

Step 1: In order to begin, particledots requested that ic42 choose 4 random songs from ParticleDots' published works. ParticleDots also chose 4 random songs from ic42's published works.

The songs are:

1. http://macjams.com/song/46489
2. http://macjams.com/song/56689
3. http://macjams.com/song/43972
4. http://macjams.com/song/31700
5. http://macjams.com/song/62482
6. http://macjams.com/song/62296
7. http://macjams.com/song/60711
8. http://macjams.com/song/58853

Step 2: Load these 8 songs into the ParticleDots Accelerator creating a 29 minute wav file. This wav file was randomly divided creating 8 different position markers on the timeline. At these marker points, one bar of music was extracted and reverse-engineered the providing one chord from each audio slice. Particledots then painstakingly figured out in meticulous detail how to play each chord on the keyboard and sent the resulting midi file onto ic42.

Step 3: Shake the 8 chords in a Klein bottle until they arrange themselves into an unusual chord progression - again a totally random process. The final progression is: D, A, Fmin, C, Dmin, C, Bbmin, Bmin

Step 4: These 8 chords were then inserted into the icy machine to crystallize the progression into a bass-line with harmonies and a quirky mechanical melody.

Step 5: Inject some human intervention to manually massage machine-made rough spots in the generated notation. Save as a MIDI file and send back to particledots.

Step 6: Will it blend? Put the audio sequence and the MIDI sequence into the ParticleDotinator, and set the controls for the heart of the sum. A couple of test mixes ensued and were swapped back and forth between the two collaborators

Step 7: Extra surprise ingredient added. ic42 whistled and played the native american flute, and sent the recording to add to the blend. Amazingly, when ic42 whistles, he sounds like a theremin. With the new ingredients added - the whole thing was mixed and baked to experimental perfection

Step 8: ic42 created some artwork for the joyous collaboration. The google search for "ic42" retrieved an image of a book (http://www.haom.net/company.asp?id=305992). The google search for "bryn" retrieved a college image (http://www.brynmawr.edu/). These two images were merged via the ic pixelometron with artistic intent.

The result is 2 artists creating a 4/4 piece of music from 8 chords at 80 BPM. We hope this 8-step experiment excites your synapses as much as it has our own.

There is something demonically alluring about this piece of music, don't you think?

While the process may have been wildly experimental, the end result is pleasingly melodic.

Demonically Alluring
Those are some really interesting chords/chord progressions! Unexpected and disarming. I don't know anybody who can sound like a theramin when they whistle--truly a unique and inimitable skill! Pretty cool. I love that theramin sound.

when they whistle
i agree, that is quite a skill

i wonder if leon theremin was a whistler too?

This is one of my favorite rides
I've been on in a long time. Can't believe just how dynamic - melodic and darn right exciting the whole thing gets as it moves along. There is real magic at work here - as well as two seriously twisted individuals. What a pleasure - thanks guys.

seriously twisted
the random chord sequence that was generated has seriuosly twisted quality about it. i was worried in the early stages that this just might not work. i am glad that both ic42 and me allowed ourselves to surrender to the process

right then bryn and eduard...
first off i try to keep up with both of your thought processes ... i really do. i want to truly understand just what the hell you are telling me about how you are doing what you are doing..... at the end of the day tho all can be done is listen with jaw on floor. so let me just say ..."groovy tune guys!" ... (i feel so inadequate.) Wild track.

particledots said 2572 days ago (September 8th, 2010)
truly understand
cheers jack - hope your jaw is ok

to be honest its the end result that ultimately matters...however the process part was obviously integral and i hope we didnt make it sound scary from the write up, because it wasnt - its was dynamic and very great fun

the thing that i cant get over is that this piece woould not exist without the 8 randomly chosen pieces and if the random marker had dropped somewhere else after the choices had been made, it would sound totally different again

quite amazing all around i think

Just from reading your breakdown on how this was created sounds exhausting. Very creative indeed, awesome mix-match of great tunes cleverly mashed into ear candy of the third kind!

2 labs, infinite possibilities
Unfortunately there is limited time on this hurtling orb. So many things we can do, that are great learning experiences. I learned a great deal doing this, and I believe that each time we worked on the next step of this and sent it back, we each (sender and recipient) emitted a maniacal chuckle. How can the experimental mixture of cold technology and warm artistry be so enjoyable? It is. Thank you Bryn, we should do this again! However, we must wait for the tesla coil and the MIDIfire to cool off here, that was quite an experiment... my lab is still too hot to go into. 0x0

maniacal chuckles
thats right...when i first got the chord sequence and it sounded like wowwwww...then when i learned to play the chords at 80 bpm and then sent them to you it was like wowwwwwwwwwwwAAA...then when started sending your innocently crazed stuff back to me it was like....wowowowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwo

then it all came together pretty quickly and it was like wow...how cool is this

god bless the technology....(by the way i heard on NPR today that they are turning of the large hadron collider because it is costing too much in electricty to run...something like $25 million per yr...)

actually it wasnt lots of work at all but a lot of thinking took place prior to the actual recording, moving stuff around and sticking it back together....
if this was work, its some of the most enjoyable work i have ever done....cant really speak for icy, but i have a feeling he feels the same way

Very brave and matematicaly detailed experiment. I do not know whether there is something demonically alluring but the piece sounds definitely otherwordly and somehow pleasant in its unique way. Great job!

Love the way this was put together by throwing a randomness element. Lovely track that does indeed excite the synapases. Very cool track.

Experimental music is any music that challenges the commonly accepted notions of what music is. There is an overlap with avant-garde music. John Cage was a pioneer in experimental music and defined and gave credibility to the form. As with other edge
