Description
A simple song about vacuity originally meant for Tricks Upon Travellers.

Music by numbers works for me
No bleeding hearts impassioned pleas
Don't want your hate and anger, can't take your pain
Don't give me empty mantras , no harsh refrain

Music by numbers does me good
It's fine when words work by the book
Don't want your pained polemic, political prose
No ideas academic, I've no need for those

Music by numbers that's the way
I want to hear it every day
Give me those big productions, all polished up bright
No quirky introductions, they don't sound right

No dogs, no dreads, no drink, no drugs
No thoughts, no threats, no thanks, no thugs
No rights no wrongs no rants no raves
And that's just fine

No trance and trip hop trash and soul
No heavy hip hop rock n roll
No boring boy bands being bland
And that's just fine

No clever classic club cliches
No war no wasted words no way
No priest no power pop no pay
And that's just fine

wow Dick, this is really amazing! the opening does not give away what the song becomes, and the sheer energy that comes in is irresistable. love the guitar riffs and your vocals doing these extremely cool lyrics are fabulous. almost a celtic dance in there (or maybe i'm hallucinating). COOL!

Celtic is right
The guitar riff should have been a fiddle part but we never managed to get the song rehearsed and I didn't want to waste it!

Thanks for the listen and comments Karen. Much appreciated :-)

The lyrics were built up over some time!

Dick!
Dick!
I was reading the lyrics prior to listening and I thought "This is going to be heavy going!" The wonderful surprise was your music is so infectious and spirited while at the same time keeping the strength and the feeling of the lyrics intact. Loved the whole thing--starting with your sliding and gliding vocals through the instrumental work here itself. Wow--this was REALLY great, by gum!!

Thanks again Dick!

Heavy going? Moi?
I know what you mean, they do look a bit heavy!

I appreciate the comments Michael as I always liked the original idea and I'm pleased it's been well received.

Holy S--t Dick
this is awesome. The lyrics looked like a downer, until you got to them and you really brought them to life with you vocal. The intro gives nothing away as to where you going to go, right up to the time it takes off and becomes an irresistible listen.

Outstanding bit of work Mate

this was
awesome. Such a live track. Your vocals have pretty incredible panache to them. Reminds me of zooropa/popmart era U2...the sneering vocals, the lolling, thunderous riffs...I like this very much, oh yes.

Rockin'
As per usual! I never expect anything less than Baroque ready :) Phrasing can be so tricky on songs like these but I think it is handled very well here and turns out quite melodic. Very nice guitar slaying in the house here, and fav line? "No priest no power pop no pay". Love it.

Yep
That bass is smooooth. How are you recording that?
The song is very cool. Combination of creative guitar work and that indie rock vocal.
Just noticed how great the drums are. Has an indie pop type busy rhythm to it.
Super solo and the vocal "no"section really works
DWL said 2520 days ago (September 28th, 2010)
Bass was a simple DI
Drums are a bit of a cheat as they are only 2 or 3 loops I found but they worked for me in this context.

Vacuity
Splendid! Something I can relate to!

Love this. But a nit for me (rare, this) is that the reverb/delay on the vox is overcooked.

Good to hear some more TUT.

Blistering guitar as usual. (Unusual, but it has a real hint of Pat Travers about it.)

Nicely done

I can definitely imagine TUT doing this and it sounding amazing live. I think you have captured a wonderful sound here. The production is so alive and vibrant. Love the separation you have managed to achieve. Guitar is nothing short of fantastic. Stunning vocal - I actually like the 'overcooked' reverb... a lot.

Punk stepdancing
I dug the intro. The pop melody over a noisy experimental bed reminded me of a Bowie tune, but I could pin it down. The reverb (inside a box?) was kind of too roomy, in my ears. But the weird jerky flow and They Might Be Giants lyrics list was cool. Not to be a pain, but I thought the singer failed to deliver the circular breathing rhythmic list with a subtlety and expressiveness that could have compelled me to hear (and see) each of those phrases. The track sounds like a demo awaiting a more specific, compelling version to come. Still, I dug it.

Punk stepdancing
an interesting image.

I like the TMBG comparison as although they certainly weren't in my mind when I wrote this I am a big fan of their quirky style.

Always a problem with reverb. I like it but others don't.

I have to pass on the circular breathing as I have enough trouble singing as it is :)

Thanks for the considered comments Tobin.

Memorable, catchy, powerful.
Dick, this is a great tune with memorable vocal as well as musical details to get the tailfeathers shaking. Super in-you-face sound, loud but very clear vs. squeezed. and I give you credit for that great, big arms-width pan on the guitars. (A plausible strategy for those who have nothing in their parts to hide.) Very catchy lead hook with great harmonics; equally adept left-side lead sounds like it came up from the sewers.

Fulla 'tude
A couple months later, I'm almost ready to come out of exile. A re-listen yields benefits; I obviously hear the fiddle part custom made for Mark (Tricks Upon Travelers). And a big concert-hall sound. Lyrics: VERY interesting... you rail against depth and dreads (and lots more), and stay consistent with two-dimensional lyrics -- beating the point into us -- but you failed to make it fully consistent in one way: You did NOT "phone this one in," rather you give us a performance full of 'tude.

Belting it out
(Bud - thanks for the warning at 2:30!)

Very cool intro - it's a nice dramatic build up to the unexpected guitar work. Excellent riffs and guitar tones. I like the direction you took it because it could've gone a million other ways. Your singing is good, but the vocal effect makes it sound like it's in bit of a hollow space that doesn't quite match the space the rest of the band is rocking in. I didn't have headphones on so that might not be the case in a perfect listening environment. Just wanted to point it out.
