Description
This is something I wrote a few years ago,. This is an instrumental version of the song. Gaylen is working on a version with vocals that I hope to post soon. Scofugate did an amazing job with the drums. This is mostly instrumental but I gave a nod to the Beatles "Revolution" and used the "All Right" line in the end. Always loved that tune and its many variations.

I used two guitars on this. The first is new to me. It is a nylon string midi guitar played through a Roland GR-20. I blended both the nylon and synth outputs using a couple synth patches.

The second is my PRS custom-24 played through a Marshall JMP-1 preamp directly into my sound board.

Again, Scott did a fantastic job with the drums. I can't thank him enough.

Not sure how to classify this. Seems mosly funk to me, but some techno, hard rock and jazz thrown in for a little genres bending.

With vocals
The lyrics and vocal tracks that Gaylen sent me are excellent. I am doing some restructuring of the sound bed so that they fit better. I think you'll like the result. I sent Gaylen a sample this morning. I'm amazed at how different it sounds from the instrumental.

Does it hurt...
being that funky? This is so damned good... But maybe a bit of a harder snare would be good?

Hurts so good.
The nature of funk. I took your advice and beefed up the snare in the vocal version. I should have something to upload this weekend. Thanks.

Grooovy
We all have some amount of funk in us. Mine has to sometimes find a way out. Gaylen's performance is inspired. I can't wait to share it.

i hear
some classical guitar influences on those upward scales. very interesting...not exactly funk, but whatever it is, i really enjoy it. Should be killer with vocals.

Classical guitar
Thanks. The classical guitar is a Godin Nylon Synth guitar. I just got it recently and love the sound of it. You're right.. Hard to call it a traditional funk sound, but I love playing this new guitar and couldn't resist using it.

Scott
The drums really gave this tune the energy it needed. This is the first tune I've done with Scott. I'd love to work with him again. I love what he did with this.

Revolution 57 [instrumental w/ Scofugate]
Nice genre bending piece. I don't know what you'd call it, but good writing, arranging, and producing don't really need to be labeled.

Labels
Labels are always difficult for me. It is rare that I sit down and say to myself "I'm going to write a traditional jazz tune". It is probably my progressive roots. I always try to blend influences, mix time signatures, etc. Labels just seem to get in the way.

I thought jazz before funk. Funky jazz? Either way, glad I clicked the play button. Nice clean production.

Rev 57
I must have missed 10 through 56, but that's just fine. 57 is more than enough to bring me up to speed. It may be funkified jazz, but It's definitely got the trademark TS musical style. Major production. Sounds fantastic on the headphones. Yeah!

PRS custom
That bass is WAY cool. I like the smoothness of the sounds, the key change, the chordal shifting mid way thru. The spanish acoustic (left side) has a great tone. (Can the sustain on it be turned up a bit?) I like the crunching half synth nature of the doubled voices. Yes, the guitar used entering at 2:36 will work great on the tune we are formulating, but it needs to be a lot drier and less roomy.

I do think, overall, there is too much reverb going on all around, except the perc track which is just right. And in several phrases the lead is rushed a tad, especially in the beginning.

Dug the whole vibe. Cool track. Looking forward to collabing again!

Revolution Next
Ah, I detect some a familiar flavor...
Nicely done, the smooth chromatics lift the listener, the second solo's phrasing recalled Steve Hillage off the "L". Haven't heard that kinda stuff in a long time.
Keep um coming Steve.

Nifty sounds
I'm looking forward to hearing what Gaylen does vocally with this - should be amazing.
Very cool bass. I agree with src's comment about the snare - needs a bit more depth/volume/something.
Excellent bed though ..... excellent.

Neil
