Description
Another life ago, I was just another scuzzy dude in a band; my only worries were what kind of tubes were in my amp, when the next tour started, and where to find a good burrito. At some point I was growing weary of the life and wanted out. I had this girlfriend who was physically out of my league, and a little shallow. she was really just into the fact that my band was kind of popular (no judgments, we were both young). I told her I was thinking of quitting music and being a social worker or something and she freaked out. Was not into that idea at all. Long story short: we broke up, and I work with drug addicts and homeless people. She's still an actress (and still hot). I should've listened to my gut when I met the girl; would've saved us both a lot of heartache.

awhile back Bryn and I did a song the Big Blue Bear, and he took some of the tracks and manipulated them, as well as embellished them some more. I took what he did and added some vocals, synths and some other stuff. I was going for a "sampled" sound, but with realtime instruments.

Bryn: vox, monotron synth, bom-bom's, drums, other sound treatments (maybe Bryn will chime in and let us know what his process was).
Michael: vocals, ugly space violin, wobbley synth, synth-tar,
Melinda: inspiration for the lyrics

Lyrics
I should've known
not to listen to you
nothing that comes from your mouth is true

I should've known
not to follow you home
my union with you is
much worse than alone

it'll be
such a blessed relief
when you've packed all your things and
gone on your way
I should've known
I should've known
I should've known

I should've known
when I saw how you lived
the fundamental differences
in everything we do
should've known
that you're different than me
not really interesting
but definitely strange
should've known
not to follow you home
my union with you is
so much worse than alone

I should've known
I should've known
I should've known.....

someday I'd like to live on my own
someday I'd like to leave you alone
someday I'd like to live on my own
someday I'd like to just be alone

hmmm
just listened back to this and I'm not sold on the ending. should I have just faded out before the last vocal part (or just mute those lines)?

about the ending
I'd say, it would end fine just keeping on the synth on fading out. Just my opinion.

thanks
am thinking of either fading it out while it changes a bit instrumentally (without the final vocal lines), or leaving the vox and dropping most of the musical elements so the focus is the vocals. thanks for the kind words and the listen.

well
I think you accomplished exactly what you set out to do here, "sampled sound but with real time instruments" in a really cool way, love the backer and your vocals are spot on, very cool hook, great story, nice to see you post! Always know it's gonna be a treat! Thank you for sharing.

the groovy backing track is Bryns work (he also played some guitar on this), I merely sang and provided some extra ambience. thanks for checking it out.

I'm sorry! No young guitar player in a band is going to think twice about having a hot girlfriend! And what ever heartache it caused, it did lead to a cool song! Great collaboration!

great story, great tune
man i really like how honest these lyrics are, no playing around with the story to suite the rhyme, and yet each word fits perfectly into the music, i love to hear that. musically it's so slick that it's earthy, if that makes sense, probably not, same feeling I get from the postal service or old moby. really enjoyed it, thanks for the DL.

the rhythm is a little weird on this huh? Bryn is the mastermind behind the giant groove on this one. I just added my vocals and patented brand of lo-fi atmosphere. so glad you liked this one.

New meaning to the term soft synths
or made wooden synths is more like it. Great feel with lots of interesting detail. Your mixing skills have really grown of late. As for the ending - I'm good with it as it is. You may feel that you didn't have to say it - but it's what one thinks about after moving from one relationship to another. There's a combination of realization and frustration that rings true in those lines.

thanks man; was hoping to get you in on this, but I have a feeling you've probably got your hands full these days. that's for the nice comment on my mixing getting better. i think since I don't have as much time to record, I'm spending more time on mixes than I used to (a few hours versus a half hour).

I like when people put a back story so that I can get some context. it's me singing lead, but Bryn sings an awful lot of harmonies on this (although after manipulation they sound almost like synths). thanks for checking it out Cris.

Dude!!!
one more thing in common lol. Be thankful yours stayed out of your life. Mine showed up again a little over 2 years ago and turned my life upside down for a week or two and left me "standin by the road" I should have known... both times :(

Excellent song... wish I could D/L it but honestly it will remind me of how easily I can wear old habits. If I hadn't read the description I might have been alright. You always deliver brother, and Bryn was an excellent choice for this. You guys make a great team.
Peace

funny how that happens. it wasn't that quick and painless. she'd show up in the middle of the night, and of course I'd let her in. only to wake up the next day with her as my girlfriend again. i really felt like a chump (or a crackhead). don't feel bad, happens to the best of us.

glad you liked it though. when you get over her, I'll email you a copy.

Getting an 80's feel from this. Love the vocs, the plaintive quality does the lyric justice. Sounds chosen for the backer complement each other well, and the production shines.

Sometimes,
we realize we've chosen a path that isn't working for us. When we finally realize that, and reach our own level of pain me make a change. Whether that change is positive or negative we don't know as we make it. It takes time to find that out.
This change was obviously a good one for you, and the song you wrote about it shows that it was.

Great track Mike and Bryn. Very cool instrumentation, vocals and harmonies, and great lyrics. What's not to love about this song.

Hey Michael
this is sounding really great. it is amazing how elements of the same music can be used over and over in totally different ways dont ya think?
you did a great job with the mix here...i think the ending works really well, but of course that is only one of many potential endings for this

i love the poppy bop that is underpinned by the lyrical content...perfect combination i think

i also think we are getting closer with these tunes to achieving that warm jets/tiger mountain mixture of pop and experimentation

great stuff!

Following You Home
Sweet song Michael. I like your "grown up" way of reflecting upon it in a song. I like the really subtle sounds (again) that are so understated, yet super dynamic at the same time. You guys have a really nice silly putty songwriting style.

I'm glad you left the final vocals in there. I listened to it a few times imagining the song without, and it works best for me as it is. I think with songwriting, you should always trust your gut....

Thanks for the download.

oh it ended.
uhm, ever hear of a band called pulsars? they were cool and still get rotation from me when i want to hear the "future". this kinda has that. if ever there is a time when you want to spend some time tinkering i would bet that there are a million things to do, but it is complete, ending is abrupt, but that sounds like punctuation. well done

Creative
I like the synth treatment of this song. This is all very organic and supportive of the vocals. If you don't listen to closely you never notice that it's not the standard guitar treatment.

Eh, except for that bass. I don't care for that hollow sound: it seems to take up too much space in the mix.

It is a really cool song about what sounds to turn out to be a heart breaker. I think the melody of the vocals accompanied by the music really make this song stand out. I'm looking over at the low score on the Song Review which I usually don't partake in but this time since I think it's unfair I'm going to have to score high on it to try and bring it up.
