Description
Years ago Ed Hannifin and I worked in the same music store, Ed used to pick out cd's of people he liked and make a sign alerting costumers that a great new cd was out. I first heard this song on one of those cds... I can't remember who it was but a nice collection of guitar instrumentals. I later found out that it was originally recorded for the library of congress by Willie Brown (there seem to have been a few people that called themselves Willie Brown, I don't think that this is the guy mentioned by Robert Johnson in "Crossroads")I kept the same basic tune but improvised the middle and threw in a few different chords. The original had words but I ain't no blues singer! If anybody wants to try singing over it feel free. There was never a copyright issued on the original song so I think it's ok to post.

so well
played. You've given it a very jazzy feel, and you phrase your chords so nicely, feels like a moonlit highway. This is top notch.

Years ago...
...Mark Stunkel and I worked in the same music store. While I was out front playing CD's and LP's and typing up orders and trying to sell guitars, Mark would be in the front teaching room doing about sixteen back to back lessons every day... And when someone cancelled or didn't show, I'd drag him up front to demonstrate guitars and amps for customers, 'cause if Mark played 'Livin' Lovin' Maid/Heartbreaker' or 'Sweet Child O' Mine', I usually sold that guitar or that amp...

But SOMETIMES on a snowy Saturday there was no one in the shop and I could just sit at the desk drinking hot cider, listening to Mark play this sort of thing... I mean, he's not superhuman or anything... He does, in fact, have to use nearly every finger he owns to play this stuff...

What you have to do, Mark, is have the Ibanez converted to stereo, so the bass lines are in one channel and the treble in the other. Then when people hear your stuff they can be convinced that you overdubbed to get it done... and they can, of course, be stunned and amazed when they see you do it all at once when they catch you live...

Still waiting for you to buy that Mac with GarageBand, though... Enough of this actually having to be able to PLAY this stuff.... I want to see what you can do with TRICKS....

Ibstrat said 2400 days ago (October 31st, 2010)

Folkways
I like this sort of laidback blues with a good solid rhythm.

Your sound is probanbly a bit more hi-fi than the Lib of Congress recording, but that's progress for you.

Not sure...
... how I missed this, but it probably had something to do with being in the middle of another crazy semester. Oh what a joy to teach music theory to people who have no interest in it.

Anyway, this is great! Very tasty, and stylish; you are the Chet Atkins of the guitar world.

Yeah, that was supposed to be funny... Pretty sure Chet Atkns was the Chet Atkins of the guitar world, but you sure play a lot like him.

I love the blues, and you play this so well.

Interesting to hear the back story about you and Ed. That helps explain the rivalry you guys have going on here at MacJams. One of these years, I'm a gonna pack my guitar and my family into the vehicle and come visit you guys. It would only take about 40 hours of driving and riding on ferries, listening to the kids argue the whole time ("That's NOT a punch-buggy!" "IS TOO!!!" "IS NOT" etc.)

Come to think of it, teaching theory to people who aren't interested in how music works doesn't seem so bad...

Too
bad we live so far apart- we should really get together, have a few beers and complain about our students. Teaching music theory to uninterested students is probably about as fun as teaching guitar to people who never practice! By the way I consider you to be the Aaron Copland of the composition world. I'm sure that you could build an incredible piece of music from just about any melody or progression- even the dreaded G D Em C !

Such a pleasant experience every time I hear one of your tunes. This one is no exception. You have such skill on your instrument and play with such security. This is quite wonderful, you know. And though I am about a month and a half late getting here, I nevertheless appreciate the opportunity to hear your superior playing.

Yeah!
I love hearing blues played like this. Love the bit where you have the walking bassline happening and the melody on top :0 I used to be able to do this style but haven't been able to in years due to arthritis in my right hand, now I have to use a pick (haven't found an upside to getting older yet, but haven't given up hope!). But this is as good as it gets, much better than I could ever do. Very much enjoyed :) ~Dave
