Description
English (probably)via the Appalachian Mountains. Probably originally from the woman's
point of view, but I figure guys can be disappointed in love too. (lol)

Lyrics
(This version collected by Cecil Sharp from the Appalachian Mountains. There are many variants and it is also found in England).

The cuckoo is a pretty bird,
she sings as she flies.
She brings us glad tidings
and tells us no lies

She sucks all the sweet flowers
for to make her voice clear;
and she never hollos cuckoo
till summer is near.

It’s meeting is a pleasure
and parting is a grief;
and a false-hearted lover
is worse than a thief.

They’ll hug you, they’ll kiss you,
they’ll tell you more lies
than the green leaves on the willow
or stars in the skies.

The cuckoo is a pretty bird,
she sings as she flies.
She brings us glad tidings
and tells us no lies

Oh yes Mark
Guys can certainly be disappointed in love, but I've come to learn that some people need to be loved while others need to give love and you know what they say....... 'it is better to give than to receive' LOL. Oooh! I feel so much better now LOL. This is a lovely song. well played and performed (I envy you you're finger picking style)... sounds really traditional, regards M

Cuckoo
Hehe, my mom calls me a cuckoo bird! This was so very pretty. You sing with a lot of emotion, which is great.

Thanks Raven
Yes, well I suppose I've been called cuckoo occasionally (lol).
Yes, I think it's important that some feeling comes through recording, especially in singing.
Cheers
