Description
Well I think I'm almost officially having a midlife crisis. Its either that or seasonally affected disorder.Feel like hollowing out a tree, getting inside it and sleeping for 10 billion years.Apologies to all those people out there who do lots of good stuff for people everyday and don't do the feeling miserable bit.I am in complete admiration of you,and continue to strive to be somebody useful in society.Anyway - heres a song I uploaded on macjams a few years ago re-done.I chose the picture because I've been watching everything that ever inspired me as a child, and this picture was one of them.I love the way he's holding his ass because he fell down from the moon too soon, and stole somebody's hedge.Thats the kind of story I'd prefer to read in the daily newspaper.I can live with that kind of story, cos it's quite amusing and not thoroughly depressing like most of the headlines.

It was quite scarey to me,to compare the two versions after I finished recording this,as I didnt listen to the original 4-rack version I did,6 years ago.I realised I put it down a key or two, probably cos I couldn't reach the notes now. Also I didnt add the slightly manic harpsichordist part.

It sounds a bit more mature now.How scarey.

Heres the original:-

www.macjams.com/song/28621 - Eternal Clouds first version

I can't really sing opera - and as I said in the original post,if you know anyone who can I'd love to hear it sung by a proper singer. Thanks so much for listening.Rich.Off to dig a deep hole, get in it and get someone to cover it in sand. And leaves.

Oh by the way,in case you want to know what the poem says and you may be getting to the stage of losing your eyesight like me,the poem goes:-

'The Man in the Moon was caught in a trap
For stealing the thorns from another man's gap
If he had gone by,and let the thorns lie,
He'd never have been Man in the Moon so high'

Lyrics
Eternal Clouds

Call the Watcher in the green
The piper in the trees
The seasons guardian angel
Love is greater than the sea
It changes you and me
Though we cannot live forever

Autumn fades the golden boughs
Spring lights the emerald flowers
We chase eternal clouds

Call the workers in the field
Your gentle heart to yield
A promise to the traveller
Silver flashes from the stream
A poorman only dreams
Of finding one sweet lover

Dancing shadow Harvest whisper
Queen of Sunlight fear the storm
We seldom catch the skylark song
We only seek one true beauty true

I think...
..had you sounded like Pavarotti, you would have ruined this. This is above excellent Richard--but I'm sure you must realize that (or do you? Maybe that's the secret to your success). Bravo! Also: A good cure for Seasonal Affective Disorder is to paint your bedroom walls with glow-in-the-dark paint (and if you believe that, I'm Mahatma Gandhi!)

Glow
glow paint
funnily enough I recently bought a glow-in-the dark sheet with a spray can that sprays light onto it for a quid/$1 from a charity shop (seriously).Tonight/this morning however,I took the vodka route.Thank you - I'll keep trying to be something or other. The singer i usually accompany on piano hasn't been able to make it up to the hotel last 2 weeks, because of flooding on the road,so Ive been attempting to entertain audiences with my own singing. Its took its toll - I do a good jerry lee louis, but I'd rather just stay at home to be honest.bloody show must go on though i spose. Thanks Mike.Rich

Wonderful Richard!
You sing better than me (or is it I?) so I don't know what you're whining about. The lyrics are elfin, or fey: fairy-rustic, maybe. The melody and harmonies are very pretty and the ivory-tinkling (almost harpsichord) is fabulous! Nice post. Thanks.

Excellent!
The minstrel returns.

This is just so well put together. I loved the changes in texture and the arrangement is top class as I expect from you.

Has a bucolic innocence. The lyrics alone paint a wonderful picture and the music lifts this to another level.

I hope the clouds start to lift soon.

Cheers

Dick

Oh I battle the same, just want to crawl in a cave and hibernate! It sucks, but this doesn't suck, this is outstanding and I absolutely love your voice and the way you sing it, perfectly imho, especially the harmonies! You're piano playing is incredible, the strings are spot on, the panning? of the piano, the rhythmic feel of this piece is beautiful, amazing lyrics, 3rd listen as I'm trying to find the words to say how much I love this song, the backer and mix are soooo gooood, but the musicality of this work is mind blowing, genius! By far one of the cooolest songs I've ever heard anywhere!

Phrase
After listening to this once I had a pleasant feeling of being taken along on the musical flow. So I took a closer listen to see what the structure is here, and it turns out you have a rather wonderful sense of phrasing.

The verse part opens with a phrase. Call that A. Then that phrases repeats. So we have a very traditional AA. And true enough to song form we get a B. But what's that, the B goes on too long and in fact ends the verse! So instead of a traditional AABA form we have an AAB with an unusual B. The B part also distinguishes itself because the chords change twice as fast as in the A part.

Psychologically, the fact that B is sort of "a phrase and a half" means that the listener does not come to a complete rest, but stays in the flow of the music.

The "Dancing Shadow" part does a similar trick with unusual phrase lengths.

In all, very nifty and much enjoyed.

wow!
thats quite an analysis of form and structure,Vic - i would never have noticed that,-even though i studied the structure thing at college moons ago.I guess I only ever applied to classical music.Oh yeah - i spose this is a bit classical. It is interesting the way a song can be built up.I never really got over the way 'one of these days' builds up to that hellish voice before launching into the full on riff.I always thought that was so clever - building something up over a stretch of time.I spose most muci does that in someway,or other well, unless its John Cages silent piece but even then I spose that its quite a tension builder.

Thanks for inspiring thoughts,Vic - Richard

Oooh....all I can say is your voice is so very soothing.
Enjoyed your set-up story for this beautiful piece.

It's a nice reminder to us all, to reflect on our life, and to find new purpose to keep our lives as interesting, as when we had the eyes of children.

Thanks Richard

keep up the good work of posting animated pictures of Karen - you must have quite a library by now! I know she appreciates it.Yes - well I guess its a point that is open to debate,I do admit to being quite a retrospect, but I think sometimes you have to retrospect in order to move forward, but I think too much can drag you back.

In some ways I was thinking of that nursery rhyme,'Lavendars Blue' with these lyrics - some to make corn and some to make hay etc.

It probably does look more toward nursery rhyme land than rural farming days, although Harvest time is still probably celebrated by a variety of cultures,I expect.

Thank you for commenting - Off to yours for some Tea and Scones

Richard, this is beautiful...
...again...

I love your singing on this, and the multi-layered production manages to stay together and flowing all through... No multitrack creep going on here...

The lyric sounds like it could've been pulled from Frazier's Golden Bough, or some collection of pastoral poetry, and it comes across as real and lyrical, not 'faux'-anything....

Anyway, I love it and it's heading to the iPod...right...now...

looked up the french to find the meaning.I guess sometimes its nice to be ironic rather than fake if u know what I mean - i think frank zappa for instance could be very genuinely ironic,or just storytelling without being false.Interesting word. The Golden Bough - I have seen that on many a shelf over the years, and scanned the odd page, one of my favourites is AE Houseman, and robert louis stevenson in particular songs of travel.the music vaughn williams put to em on piano is magical.Thank you Ed - Rich

While I can hear that sounding really good and fitting, your voice here makes this piece extra significant and touching, maybe it is because of what you are going through psychologically, but there is a realness here that really grabs you, kinda jumpstarted my own midlife crisis, thx man

Such a peaceful composition.
This has the feeling of a true ballad, a song chanted by a minstrel. I can't think of a more precise way to write and perform a song like this: you kept it so simple melodically while pushing the accompaniment to perform some magical tricks (love the piano!)as a backdrop to your inquisitive lyrics. Very beautiful number that I am glad I heard this morning.

Rich - I'm glad Andrew pointed a signpost to this tune - it's really very good. I've listened a couple of times, trying to put my finger on what is familiar, and it hits me how Moody Blues-ish this is. This tune is so well written and so well put together, and your vocals sound wonderful. Nice job, Rich. This is a perfect listen for a Sunday, or any day - very much enjoyed - thanks!

Rich and colourful...
I always know that when I hit the play key I will hear a very Rich and lyrically colourful arrangment! I can empathize on needing to hollow out a tree and take a long winter's nap....I do believe it is seasonal. Ah..tiz the season. fantastic
bespeaks a melancholy bohemia. no? I don't know if you've heard of Stornoway -- they're a new British indie pop group and their single "Zorbing" is right up this song's alley. Both are fantastic pieces of work. I really like the way the strings and the piano play off one another. Yet another stunning tune. My one critique is that the lyrics, though well written, are occasionally too fixated on airy images -- it makes it a little bit harder for the listener to latch onto your words.

Great work!

Thanks man
i havent heard of stornoway - I will try and catch up.haha i like your critiscism on the airy lyrics.well is say like, but what i guess i mean is that is my biggest critisiscm too myself.please excuse various misspellings of the word criticism in this post.oh hang on that last one was right,I think.Yes you are right - I re-used these lyrics, cos I WROTE em wen i was 16 and now i'm 37 - i look back and love my all out refusal to accept reality.I used to get bullied at school cos my head was in the horizon and not in the classroom,so you are quite correct - i was completely away with the fairies, the reason cos i don't change the lyrics,is cos i am no longer AS MUCH away with the fairies.that magical place is quite hard to find these days! I love your songs, man they remind me of the desert.hoping to come up with something to one of your tunes. Thanks very much for getting in touch! Rich

re: head in the clouds
I'm the exact same way. It took a rude awakening from a few poets I really respected for me to realize that I needed to rethink. The key is to ground those airy images, the Sublime, etc in something more immediately visceral. You can do it with sound (the relationships between syllables), or with image. I love that my songs remind you of the desert. I've never lived in the desert. If you ever do come up with something for any of my stuff, gimme a shout, I'd love to see what you come up with!

Cheers

funny
It's funny. I tried to listen to this a few days ago, and I just couldn't do it. I just wasn't in the space to absorb it. That is one thing I know abou tyour stuff Richard is that it is always amazing, but I have to be in the right place to HEAR it. Tonight, I came back and now I can. Funny how that works isn't it? So glad I did. This thing is magical, expansive, pastoral, romantic and dynamic, shall I go on? The vocals are just formal and just informal enough to not become saccharine. Hard to do. The piano is lovely as always. Top drawer my friend.
