Description
I've recently started a couple of new projects with Natalie. She is an excellent songwriter and has a very strong voice. I liked the song "The Ocean" quite a bit when I first heard it and immediately heard an edgier version in my head. Natalie sent me her vocal tracks and they fit really well. That was Friday. On Saturday I sent the mix to Scott, who added these great drum tracks.

This came together really quickly, but I like the results. Natalie has an awesome voice.

One other note to mention is that I'm recovering from the flu and my ears aren't quite right yet. Please excuse anything I may have missed in the mix.

Natalie Scibetta: Vocals
Peter Holbrook: Lyrics
Scott Fugate: Drums
Steve Stone: Percussion, Bass, Guitars, Keyboards

Close
I think Andrew had by about 1 minute... Better luck next time! Thanks for the comment. Now that I listen to it with clear ears I think it turned out pretty well. At the time I couldn't hear any highs. It sounded dull and I was afraid I had the bass a little too loud.

The Ocean
oh wow - yes this is WAY cool! Natalie's song and vox - just extraordinary! Steve, what a great job you did on the instrumentation, and OMG Scott's drums round this out superbly! I get a little feel of YES in your playing Steve, which in my book bumps it up yet another few notches! EXCELLENT work to all - THANKS for the D/L!

Very Nice
I love Natalie's voice. I am a fan. The added guitars, piano, and drums make a nice bit of music here! Great job Mr. Stone, Natalie and Scott.

I don't think
you missed much Steve! This sounds really good. Natalie has a brilliant voice, and I really like your arrangement. Maybe Natalie could be a tad louder, but that's more my preference than any real criticism. Love the little pizzicato runs between verse and chorus.
Pro sound - excellent performances all around.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

guitar tone
is very gentle giant. This is too cool. This has a very Destroyer feel to it, the ambient keys and the quirky vocals (female Dan Bejar?) but with a distinctly proggy flavor. Nice!

By the way
Lyrics for The Ocean were written by a dear friend of mine, Peter Holbrook. Can't take credit for them, although I'd like to, since they are brilliant!
PeterB7858 said 2460 days ago (November 22nd, 2010)
Nice juxtaposition
The fantastic female vocals are a great contrast to the lower guitars and keys. The song really knits comfortably together and was an enjoyable journey. Thanks.

I would recognize that
guitar sound anywhere. You have a very distinct sound to your guitar. Very interesting fusion of sounds here. Very cool how the guitar dances around the vocal here. The sparse synth in the background fills it out nicely too. Of course Natalie's voice shines here as it always does. It is perhaps a bit low in the mix at times but how can I help wanting to hear more of those beautiful pipes! The drums are right in the pocket and sound great as well! Very cool tune, Sarah McLaughlin meets Al DiMeola!

intriguing new take
I do like the new proggy undertow here, very cool soundbed and drumwork, but I think that the new angular waves tend to wash over Natalie's gentler vox for the most part, and her singing gets lost in the mix, not volume-wise, but style-wise. Perhaps if she sang this with more intensity for this particular mix, but then it may not match the message of the lyrics... not sure. Just my thoughts on this.

Awesome
How on earth did I miss this? I recently heard this song from Nat & loved it. This is very cool too, has more of an upbeat kind of feel, yet still has that smoothness. Terrific collab, I hope you're over your flu!

Good stuff
The opening of this track is very strong.

But then the backing tracks start to build up, and the vocals (somewhere around the 1:00 mark, or 2:06 where that pad comes in) could use a bit more intensity. Maybe just a bit more forward in the mix, maybe sung differently, maybe simply not build up the background that much? Dunno, but I feel a bit of a mismatch.

the ocean
yes....edgier pop tune. natalie has a great vocal style....unpretentious....none of that growling or allovertheplace warbling that passes for 'singing' nowadays. love the 'classical orchestra' additions. great mix. scott cool. can't hear the lyrics properly but they sound effortless so they're probably well strung together. shades of 'hit me with your rhythm stick' in the 'stops'. cool track steve.
