Description
I wrote this song in response to having to end work and being pretty unsure about what retirement held for me. Everyone told me it would be great but I wasn't quite so sure... Luckily, I am having a ball! I hope you enjoy it. Peter.

Lyrics
The Barque Illusion – Peter Bowen (2010)

A mind’s eye voyage, a trip for dreamers
Azure seas and waving palms
Far beyond the grasp of schemers
Bogus prophets, fake Imans

The isle a mystic place of plenty
Gentle rain feeds mountain streams
The years fall back; again I’m twenty
Life is fine in all my dreams

The Barque Illusion lies at mooring
Rocking gently, leeward shore
The sky is clear, a new day’s dawning
Forget the past, what went before

A chalice filled with fine old red wine
To toast your friends and drink their health
They’re all aboard; they are your lifeline
Your days are rich beyond all wealth

Horizon stretching out forever
Balmy breezes cool the day
You laze and drift upon the river
All your cares just float away

The barque Illusion lies at mooring
Rocking gently, leeward shore
The sky is clear, a new day’s dawning
Forget the past, what went before

The barque Illusion lies at mooring
Rocking gently, leeward shore
The sky is clear, a new day’s dawning
Forget the past what went before

Retirement
Yes. Isn't THE BEST!!! Into my own 2nd year now. Don't know why I waited so long.

This song is just beautiful, Peter. The guitar work is spectacular and your percussion track just keeps cookin' at a steady pace keeping the whole thing together. I love the subtle strings, too. Such care you have taken with the performance and the orchestration of this number. To my ears, it is just stellar on so many levels. "Horizon stretching out forever." Indeed! What a beautiful way to start out the next part of your life. I hope there are many MANY more songs like this ahead of you. I am so glad I heard this.
Peace.

Supportive
Hi Paul, thanks for your positive endorsement of the song. I am fairly happy with the package and I feel that I am starting to get a bit of a handle on getting some reasonable quality sound out of GB. For me retirement is meaning a different kind of busy (which is great) and I seem to have more energy around things that are personally important. Thanks for your support.

Well done Peter
That penetrating guitar at the intro set the tone perfectly for the rest of the song. I like how you kept your phrasing within a gentle clip, which made the syllables of the words give this a nice rocking sensation (as mentioned in the lyrics--very fine touch there with the vocal delivery). This is a really fine song--I very much liked it and the mix is just right. Thanks again! Michael

mood
i like the mood - and the lyrics

i'd do something to make the chorus stand out in a different way from the verses... key shift? different instrumentation? something... maybe just a rearrangement of the stereo mix might do it

very cool: They’re all aboard; they are your lifeline

wonderful
thanks

Really outstanding
Your sound is very enjoyable and cool to hear. Very soft and smooth. Double tracking the vox works well. Guitars also sound good. Love the separation on the left/ right spekers.

Very nice work Peter.

Things are going OK
Hi Char, I was pretty unsure about how things might pan out when I stopped work (hereditary kidney disease - 3 days a week of dialysis :( but I have found time to write some music and spend time on MJ, so all is not lost. Take care, Peter.

Bogus Prophets fake Imans
Now with this one it's the lyrics that really grabbed me. Perfectly captures the moment and feelings about a major change in your life. D/l to further enjoy. Cheers Mark

Classic rookie mistake
Hi Mark. Yeah, I liked that line too. Thanks for the encouraging comments and the D/L. I quite like this song but I think I made the classic rookie mistake of posting songs too fast so it didn't really get a fair run before being replaced. Thanks for listening to my music. Regards, Peter.

Still learning...
Hi tele29, thanks for visiting my back catalogue. I was still pretty new to GB and recording when I did this song and the hiss annoys me a bit but I like the song. It was a song for a new beginning. Thanks. Regards, Peter.

The Barque
I love this song. It's very "real" - you obviously know something about things like boats and red wine, and are able to link these to life in general and your circumstances in particular. Love the gentle melody and the guitar intro, too. Great work!

Back catalogue :-)
Thanks for tracking back in time Philip. I am very happy with this song and the instrumentation but would be able to record it better these days. Too much hiss and the guitar lead guitar is pretty hot, EQ wise. I might get around to re-doing it one day. Peter.

I like it
Nice mood. Personally I wouldn't have done the doubled vocal throughout. Just my two cents. Nice groove and playing. Thanks for this.

Lack of confidence...
Hey jobu, thanks for checking out some of my earlier stuff. This was one of my first posted songs and I still wasn't confident about my vocals - hence the double track. Appreciate your comments. Regards, Peter
