Thinking About You

Description
This was my first serious attempt at writing a song for our band but in the end I did not like my vocals and we cut it. I recorded it in GB at the time and wasn't all that happy with it either. Luckily I have learnt a trick or two in the last six months and I resurrected it and re-recorded the guitars and the vocals and mastered it better. I tried to maintain a "live" feel to the song so most of the guitar work is long single takes (with a few blemishes - as is always the case :-)). Anyway, I feel more comfortable around the song now. Hope you enjoy! Thanks.

Lyrics
Thinking about you – Peter Bowen (2008)

Trees flash by, I’m on the road This story’s waiting to be told
Heat haze is rising up ahead The evening sky is tinted red
My mind is wandering from the view
Because I’m thinking about you
Yes I’m thinking about you
You know I’m thinking about you

It’s been a while since we last met Have you got my letter yet?
We seemed to talk so easily You know I loved your company
The miles roll by, there’re now so few
And I’m thinking about you
Yes I’m thinking about you
You know I’m thinking about you

We met at dark down by the river The smell of spring was in the air
We’d seen the last of winter’s shiver I pray to God that you still care

Cause I’m thinking about you
Yes I’m thinking about you
Because I’m still thinking about you

I had to leave my job had hold, I suppose that story’s often told
But your smile I can’t forget, I have to find my life’s duet

And I’m thinking about you
Yes I’m thinking about you
And I’m thinking about you. (Repeat and fade)

Thinking About You
I can't believe you would ever cut something because you're not happy with your vocal. Your relaxed and effortless vocals are a strength. This tune has a particularly good vocal. It has a 70s singer/songwriter vibe that is very cool. I dig your lead guitar style. There's a bit of BB King in there in the way you sprinkle the track with short bluesy phrases.

Country rock?
Hi Andrew, Thanks for the support re the vocals. My vocal style is definitely much more acoustic singer/songwriter than power rock legend and, in truth, this is more of a generic country rock "road" song than a genuine rock song in my mind, There didn't seem to be a Country Rock section though. I appreciate your support of my music. Warm regards, Peter

The voice in my head...
Hi Karen, thanks for your supportive comments. I really appreciate them. I have been singing to family and friends (and in public) for a long time (generally just accompanied by my guitar) and people have always responded well but when I started recording it sounded so different to how it sounded in my head that it threw me a bit. Luckily I think I am finally coming to terms with my recorded voice and feel more comfortable about it. Take care. Peter.

Great voice!
A touch of Gerry Rafferty, in my opinion the greatest voice in popmusic :-)
Cool guitarwork as well

You should be well pleased -
This sounds great, there are no weaknesses anywhere, the song is strong, dynamic and well performed. I'm listening to it through my trusty Aurotones that don't see anything through rose coloured glasses and it still sounds superb. Oh and by the way the vocals are just right in both pitch and balance. Luverly.

Well pleased..
Hi woofer3. Thanks for the detailed comment. I am quite pleased with the way this has eventually turned out. I am finally getting my act together re the hardware and software required to record songs that stand up a bit better technically. Appreciate you dropping by and taking time to comment. Warm regards, Peter.

solid tune
Really like the style, kind of jackson browne meets the traveling wilburys. Really, really like the bridge which could almost be pure prairie league, very cool change. I like your laid back vocals, I like how straight up and natural they are. Nice guitar bits too. Enjoyed this. Only picky thing is I'd replace the tambo loop with some real tambourine...

Hi Craig, thanks for your positive response to this song. Jackson is an absolute hero of mine, so to even get mentioned in the same sentence as him is a real treat. You must be a very perceptive man :-)
Agree re the tambourine. Ebay, here I come... Take care, Peter.

Background guitars
Hi Mark, thanks for dropping by again and responding positively to this song. The background guitars are a response to me listening far more critically of late to music that I have lived with for many years. The whole mixing / mastering process is fascinating and recording my own stuff has made me listen with new ears to all kinds of music, especially re the placement of instruments in a mix. I appreciate your support. Regards, Peter.

Thinking About You
Solid structure, I like the way you transitioned from verse to chorus. Laid back vocal is perfect for this track. Guitar lines are interesting and well played. I didn't understand this line "I had to leave my job had hold"

Thanks
Hey Dave, thanks for finding the time to have a listen and comment on my music. I appreciate your support. "I had to leave, my job had hold" refers to him having to leave the girl he has just met because he had work in another town that he had committed to. Hope this makes sense. I appreciate you dropping by. Regards, Peter.

Yeah
Peter, you are major league writer and performer! Maybe your pictured suggested the imagery but I rather imagined a person missing a loved on he met on summer vacation at some resort (this is where that wonderful contrapuntal arrangement in the verses reinforces that image). Easily one of the best I've heard here in recent memory--everything is just so right about this song. I'd be very happy to pay to hear something this good anywhere else, believe me! Thank you Peter! Google images...
Hey Michael, thanks for your continued encouragement and support of my music. I am glad that you like it. High praise indeed. In regards to the image, I did a Google image search on "Thinking About You" looking for a guy standing staring wistfully into the distance but couldn't find one so I just grabbed this anonymous pretty girl instead. I'll see what I can come up with. Take care, Peter.

Aussie comment
The strongest point of this song is your vocals. They sit really well in the mix. I thought you met a duck by the river, but it was in the dark. It's funny how our minds play tricks. Nice chorus sound in the verses. Did you master track this yourself?

Hi, thanks for having a listen to a fellow countryman from the land girt by sea. And thanks for the positive response to my vocals. Yes, I just mixed it in Garageband. Reasonably happy with the result. Regards, Peter.

space
Hey Peter, Great remix. The vocals are very clean and the chord progression is beautiful. To get a 'live' sound, I think that the overall space setting of the reverb is a bit close-in. Meaning the rhythm and lead guitars in particular could benefit from a little deeper reverb setting. They seem a little dry to sit comfortably in a live auditory space. Just a thought. Nice tune!

Reverb
Hey RR thanks for the listen and constructive feedback. Reverb in GB is something I am still getting a handle on. The standard track slider reverb doesn't sound that great and the Track Reverb and AU Matrix Reverb seem to have quite noticeable effects. I need to do some more reading to understand how to tweak the parameters a bit better. Appreciate you dropping by. Regards, Peter

Cover band :-)
Hi Mark , thanks for taking the time to have a listen and provide some positive feedback to this song. It is a generic sort of road song with a late 70's feel and does sound best live. I play in a 60-80's cover band :-). Regards, Peter.

Knopfleresque?
Sounds like a really great sound. i don't hear a bad note anywhere, and i felt as if i was in a bar somewhere it was so immediate and live. A bit Knopfleresque, to my ear, only with better vocals!

You sound like you have been playing together for years, sounds so effortless and perfectly in time.

Cheers for the post. Enjoyed it.

Easy stride
on that vocal track-- that and the guits are the highlights here for me. There's an open quality to the sound that matches the (definitely) 70's vibe. The drums need some TLC and I'd break up that tambourine a little, but since I'm not a drummer that's minor stuff! ;-)
All in all, a refreshing tune done with style. Much enjoyed, thank you.

Living in the 70's...
Hi SJ, thanks for the positive feedback and suggestions. The drums were just slightly doctored loops (I'm not a drummer either) but I am slowly starting to understand how to run them around a bit better. I agree re the tambourine (a loop again). I will re-look at this. Take care, Peter.

Good song. Normally I'm not a fan of chorus on guitar, but it fit this song well, it kind of gave it an 'America' vibe during the parts where you broke it all down and had just guitar and vox.

Shuffle...
Okay, shuffle it on the road... nice loose feel. You could play a little melody... Those 7th chords are cliche, but I won't complain, maybe a driving bassline... the outro solo started catch fire...

Hear here
It's hard to redo a song and not have it come out sounding differently - and, hopefully, sounding better, as we continue to improve our playing and production skills : )

To my general listening ear, everything I hear is working nicely here.

I like your song structures and your lyrical constructions; there seems to be a strong sense of conception underlying your stories and their presentations.

The only feedback I have on this piece is I think the guitar gets short shift: because it opened, I kept waiting for it to come back in as a solo, but when that finally (almost) happens, it is forced to share the space with the chorus. I'd like to hear it by itself for a couple of licks before the vocal comes back in to to finish off the song together. But that's just a thought.

Detailed feedback
Hi Warren. Thanks for having a listen to this song and providing some detailed feedback. I appreciate your thoughtful comments. I suppose I was thinking that the guitars are running little riffs throughout the whole song, hence no main solo, but I can see what you mean. Warm regards, Peter.
