Domino Effect

standing up to see the stars
touch the light with their eyes
some will believe some will deny
come out and feel the light
i caught you sulking in the night
set them up to knock them down
comes the rise and fall

domino effect is all around
it only takes one to fall
domino effect all fall down

pretty dreams five miles long
tumble away as daylight comes
where the sun climbs and climbs
the hours count the way down
minutes sweep the time away
time slides in we slide out
topple in dreams five miles long

domino effect is all around
it only takes one to fall
domino effect all fall down

set out walking to the moon
the last step none to soon
a shooting star knocked me down
lost my footing lost my ground
as the earth came into view
stood so high fell so low
had no other place to go

domino effect is all around
it only takes one to fall
domino effect all fall down

Very tasty guitars Vic! I was thinking about doing something similar soon. Luckily we don't sound much alike. You are pretty refined and I beat the heck outta whatever I play.

I really enjoyed this. I'll give it another listen when I get home so that I can hear it on my good monitors.

the guitar
is wonderfully recorded, and you've phrased the notes really nicely. The vocals sit on the guitar well. This is really excellent!

i just bought a presonus firestudio interface and it made a big difference over my presounus firebox, i wasn't expecting that. also the main acoustic track, the ibanez acoustic has a xlr output that really broadens the signal.

thanks for checking it out Bob

it's just 3 guitars plus the solo. 2 backing guitars only play bit parts. seemed to me to fill out wonderfully that i actually dumped a 12 string track.

that guitar
sounds amazing! Man I keep forgetting how much talent lurks here, I absolutely love this song, can't get over the quality of that acoustic guitar sound or the harmonies you're doing, great lyrics, love your voice, cool idea for the hook, love the break, sweet solo, altered tuning? Nice Vic! stellar post!!!!!!!! I was just listening to your tracks on our collab this morning, you are the man!

I was even a bit surprised how well the main acoustic came out sound wise.

no altered tuning just a capo on the third fret. why the capo? i have no idea, it did make the hybrid finger picking a little easier though

Lots have commented on the guitar. I like the idea of a dream being five miles long! Did the vocals follow the guitar melody or the other way around?!!

in the mood
vocals came last. that seems to be my recording process, it seemed to work best staying with the guitar melody on this one.

i appreciate the listen.

Domino Effect
Vocs/melody are sitting pretty against this well arranged backer. Tight playing, and beautiful tone on the acoustic. Nice hook, and the lyric develops it well. A firm and steady capo is essential for a song like this :)

yes a capo can make a difference. although i did have to transcribe the tune for the bass and lead part since they were not capoed.

thanks for the listen!

I like that 15/4 chorus. That gives it a unique feel. Guitars (all of them) sound great. Excellent production too. Lyrics are thoughtful and thought-provoking. Very well done, all around.

Vic, you're raising the bar on the vocals sir. Really killer background parts. I love the arrangement. At first I thought you were gonna start hammering away on the keys ala Fats Domino :-)
That would've been cool but I really dug this. One of those tracks that expands with every listen, and filled with heart all the way through.

Very interesting Vic
with other lyrics this could almost be a Christmas carol. As is it's another wonderful Vicartronic piece with some remarkable restraint - knowing what you can do plugged in and fired up. Excellent acoustic arrangement.

Ed Hannifin said 2511 days ago (December 5th, 2010)
I'm very pleased to hear...
...a Vic Holman piece with multiple acoustic guitars sitting on a nice, solid bass... Coupled with a vocal melody that really stretches out of the more usual Vic Holman territory, including multiple vocals on the choruses...

I like the chiming rhythm playing at the solo against the single note playing...And I like the alternation between strumming chords and arpeggiating them...

My only, only, only nit is that I would like to hear the acoustics sounding a little more mic'd and less pickup-ed... As the layers add up, I think it sounds a little less natural than it might...
Ed Hannifin said 2511 days ago (December 5th, 2010)
Forgot to mention...
That I also like the dramatic pauses...
Vic Holman said 2511 days ago (December 5th, 2010)
Thanks Ed.
i thought a nice stripped down sound would work best here. i actually had a 12 string for the backing parts, but it came across as too trebly so i ended up replacing it with 2 acoustics playing the same but still getting that type of sound.

at this time of season miking is not so doable with the furnace going. i had to wait it out quite a few times just to get the vox's done. although i should of added logics space designer and used a room reverb setting. that would of worked as well

i appreciate the listen & comments Ed

Thought
I'd commented but can't see myself in the list. Hate it when that happens as my second comment is never as good as my first. I definitely said the chorus is stunning. The guitar tone is fab. 2.15 is utterly dreamy and pleasing.
One of my faves of yours for sure.

Guitar layering
Hi Vic. I'm picking up some Beatlesque influences in this as well. The layered guitars sound great and the vocal harmonies are very well done. Really enjoyed the song. Thanks for the posting. Regards, Peter.

Clear as a bell!
One of your cleanest mixes Vic. The guitars are beautifully recorded. I must investigate the Presonus in our Shed studio more closely - maybe borrow it for the next song.
Love your thoughtful arrangement - mix is brilliant.
Another excellent song. What can I say?!

Rich...
Many other comments (above), but my two cents focuses on the richness of those three guitars against each other. You've somehow miced them to cover a really wide sound spectrum that is particularly pleasant to experience...The tune is a haunting one, too: well-controlled at every step of the way and always within character with itself (does that make sense?). So, not only is the performance a very pleasant one; the composition itself is one that is full of interest and controlled writing. Nice.
