Description
Happy New Year! Here is my Progressive Rock version of Toyland with me on Moog/B3/synth, Jim Edwards on guitar. I've asked drummer friend to add some Progressive Rock drumming, so an additional version may surface soon. There are some transitions I built in specifically for great drum fills. However, the polyrhythms (3s over 4s over 6/8, which were great fun to play in) will make drumming along a challenge!

This track started with Jim messaging me that we had been paired in the Collaboration Challenge. He had originally requested an acoustic jazz version. But after fooling around with stuff on my piano for a week, I thought I was unable to come up with anything new sounding. So I decided to use some of my old electric pianos and hit upon this cool patch that sounded like Christmas snow falling. After trying out several grooves, everything was coming out more progressive rock than jazz, so I went with it. I used a fretless bass, B3, and other e-piano belles to create the bed, then sent it off to Jim.

Jim sent back two electric guitar tracks using different effects. He didn't play the melody like I had imagined. But he did add a bunch of other carol fragments. So I used a Moog to play the Toyland melody and provide a harmony to some of his fragments. My favorite is the Auld Lang Syne at the end. The track ended up being a sort of medley.

Thanks, Jim, for providing the inspiration to build more into the track. It was great fun!

Happy Holidays, everyone!

Enjoying
this as I am typing, I enjoy the high pitched synth and the theme melody with it. The bass really adds emotions. Like the originality of this. Like how later on it kind of seems it the music becomes stationary and gathers in which adds a settlement of sounds. You seem to always add such much creativity to music. A great addition for the holidays, thanks for that !

Way to go as usual !

I Enjoyed Doing This!
I regret that I only had time to give Tobin 2 guitar tracks to choose from. If I'd have more free time, I could have sent 7 or 8.

However, I think he did an excellent job of adding f/x, choosing between and placing the two that he did get, it was way beyond my own expectations. Great job, Tobin! If I ever record an album and need a producer, your name is on the list.

Cheers,
Jim

Toyland 1020
Oh yeah! What a great (very fresh) arrangement of a classic! I love the atmosphere of the synth sounds. It takes talent to make a Mini Moog sound as expressive as an acoustic instrument. Great guitar sounds. They sit so well against the masterful keys.

This is neat, guys....
And I don't say 'neat' lightly...

The percolating synth bits give it a sort of clockwork/musicbox feel without to any degree making it stiff or mechanical.... I can imagine a sort of huge toymaking shop with all the musical toys joining into a collaboration that feels accidentally sonorous, falling towards something more intentional as it goes along...

Nice____
You should pitch this to Loob for the drum track. He is awesome and I'm sure he could produce what you need in the drumming area. This is nice and has some interesting chord changes. Nice pick of sounds.

Enjoyed - Thanks for sharing,
