Description
A simple retelling of the story of the Prodigal Son found in Luke 15. It seems there were two brothers and in their own way both had wandered afar. Inspired by a Tim Keller sermon. Posted originally in 2007 and now remixed and resubmitted. A big thank you to Scott (especially) and Richard for lending their talents on this song.

"And a cry goes out for mercy."

Vocals: Jack and Richard Schletty
Guitar, fretless bass, piano: Scott Carmichael
Harmonica: Jack

Lyrics
The younger of the sons-he was leaving,
Told his wealthy Dad, Give me all that’s mine.
So he gathered all his riches and he journeyed,
To a land to see what he would find.
To a land to see what he would find

There he wasted all his bounty,
Living only for the pleasures of each day,
With his money spent and now a pauper,
Sold his soul for some crumbs and a bed of hay.
Sold his soul for some crumbs and a bed of hay.

Chorus 1:
And a cry went out for mercy
And a cry went out for love
And a wounded heart was emptied
And the Father reaches out from above.

He then arose, traveled back to his homeland,
Seeing Dad, repented with a cry.
Father I have sinned against you and heaven,
And am not worthy to be called your son.
And am not worthy to be called your son.

His Father called the servants and commanded,
Bring the finest robe, let the feast abound.
This my son was dead, but now is living,
He was lost but now is found.
He was lost but now is found.

[Chorus 1]

The eldest son would not greet him.
Complained to Dad, I have stayed and labored here.
All these years I dared not to wander.
You owe me Dad, this just is not fair.
You owe me Dad, this just is not fair.

My son, yield not to pride and anger.
All I have has always been yours.
Your brother once was dead, now is living.
He was lost but now is found
He was lost but now is found.

Ending Verse:

Some days I am that wanton younger man.
Other times the prideful son, that is me.
Either way of myself I am not worthy
Save by the Love that reaches down to me.
Save by the Love that reaches down to me.

Chorus 2:

And a cry goes out for mercy
And a cry goes out for love
And a wounded heart is emptied
And the Father reaches out from above.

Hey maggieK..
Nice to have you visit this song. Scott graciously supplied a beautiful music bed for this song (took my guitar demo and transformed it!). I'm hoping this mix is better than the original. I think it is. The song deserved a better mix. Thanks so much.

A story to be told,
a lesson for all to learn. The Father rejoices when the wandering son returns. Praise God.

Wonderful interpretation Jack, and with a little help from your friends, an excellent musical version.

To all, a Merry Christmas and a thank you for this gift. It is received with Grace.

The Two Prodigals
Thanks to you, I bought tim Keller's book, the Prodigal God. This song lets us see how the elder son was just as messed up as the younger, well, even more so, butI I digress...Besides the lyrics,I really like the instrumentation and vocals, too.:-)

Kellers' book is a good one. And yeah... that elder brother. Someone for everyone to identify with in this story. Grace... mercy.

Thanks and blessing,
Jack

A tale well told
Great instrumentation provides a compelling sound bed for the strong vocals and story. Love the fretless bass. A tale well told. Well done to all. Regards, Peter.

sounds good with Richards backing voc's (has he gone awol from here?)

Scott' fretless really adds a nice dimension over a traditional fretted bass.

Timely!
To my ears there are two approaches wrestling for supremacy: a strummy troubadour's tale and a mildly proggy groove (must be that incomparable fretless sound). Troubadour wins, and that's fitting, given the subject matter. There's a lot of 'unresolved' life in this song. Fine production, (nice, clean, bright mix, Jack), great topic!
Merry Christmas to you all!

Jack
this story hits close to home, I was a prodigal son, and when I went to my family for help, my siblings did the exact same thing, and my Dad, when I was 28 and rock bottom, took me in and gave myself and my daughter shelter, while I went back to school for 8 years! Thank you for sharing this, and well done gentlemen, great vocals and Scott sounds awesome! Love your harmonica playing!

Pretty dramatic images.
I like the sparse musical arrangement to accompany the lyrics. The harp tooting was a cool treat:)

Refreshing
I really like this piece. Reminds of an Irish band (in the 80's) called "Moving Hearts", sans saxophone.
A very cool band with traditional elements except for the bass and the sax which were very jazzy. A Refreshing sound.

Great musical story telling
"Saved by the love that reaches down for me". Amen, brother. I'm hearing some JC Superstar type rock opera. I'll be submitting a song soon based on Psalm 46 - difficult to capture musically just as I am sure "Tale of Two Sons" was. Pop style can't capture the story - but I think powerful in the opera style you use. Great job! Oh, and thanks for your gracious welcome to Mac Jams.
