Description
Initially intended as my last song of 2010, this is now my first of 2011. I've taken some time over this song, the first music was laid down in October 201 intended for use as the basis of a Dynamite Van Pipe track. Due to other commitments it came back into the Caryatid fold and I worked on a vocal and lyric during the early part of December.
A number of people heard early mixes and gave invaluable feedback to the finished article. These included Bob Dorsey (5Extra Arms) and Kevin Jones (Bud) who spotted a timing flaw that dropped the listener out of the song. This took a while to fix but the song is all the better for it. Craig Thomas (tempie) gave superb advice about the backing vox in the pre-chorus and the main chorus, leading me to produce a much better performance. Eric Van Ausdal (Lennon714) liked the song but suggested adding some acoustic guitar to the verses and you know he was so right, the texture is immensely rounded out as a result.
Production wise it's all done in Logic Express 9. My Focusrite Liquid Mix 16 is now proving invaluable as a final mix tool. I have a basic preset which I have crested for my "sound" which emulates a classic 70's British desk in terms of EQ and compression. Although the emulation does allow you to free up the controls and achieve compression and EQ outside the limits of the original hardware, I've chosen to stay within what they would be capable of. I now have the ability to apply an overall EQ and compression to my final mixes which instantly brings them into a family sound, with just a little tweaking here and there for individual songs.
I'm hoping people will want to try this out for their own songs so I'd welcome anyone who might like me to remix their tracks (GB or LE files) using this kit.
Finally a happy new year to you all. I'm looking forward to a productive new year. I already have another finished song in the wings, music for 2 more and a demo destined for a collaboration. I've never been so busy in terms of music.
Enjoy this one and play it, as always, real loud.

Sound
Pretty new to this site and getting familiar with the musicians here. I liked the "sound" of this song and checked out a few others of yours. Apparently its no fluke.

Cool song.
Guitar might be a little loud in the mix. Might try turning up the drums and bass. Love the idea1

Wow! What a great think tank you had access to during the making of this track. Everyone of those guys produce amazing music (and each very original) as individuals. This is a very cool rock song with a equally cool pop melody. Great old school guitar sounds and production value. Your mastering approach was very successful.

Thinktank
Yeah the great thing about them is they have no shame in pointing out when it's all gone wrong! Seriously they are a great sounding board, especially as they create music across the spectrum. Glad you enjoyed the tune.

Wonderful
I think the mix is spot on. I don't think the guitar is too loud in the mix at all. I think the slightly drowned out vox is period perfect. The "oohs" sound great and come in at the most opportune time. I can imagine you doing this song on 120 minutes back in '93.

Guitars
I knew you'd have no issue with the guitars! I thought your suggestion of some acoustic really finished the song off in terms of texture. It is pretty much a 120 Minutes tune - man I loved that show - we had to watch pirated VHS copies cos it wasn't aired here.

120 minutes
this sounds to me like a culmination of what you've been trying to do the last year with your vocal melodies. that 'i can't imagine how you feel' is so sweet, and the 'get out/get out/get out' phrasing in the chorus is 100% pop goodness. meanwhile that break and the ensuing 'ooh ooohs' is spot on perfect man, just great late 80's college rock. a real pleasure dude.

Culmination
You're right, this is what I've been aiming at for some time and it pretty much ticks all the boxes for me. I've seen enough of your GB vocal files now to have "borrowed" a few techniques and structure - it's served me well here. This was meant to be a DVP song but my deadbeat singer didn't show ....

... as Eirc says there's always more on the old cassettes. I have dozens of unfinished tracks but a few are definitely coming to fruition. Glad you enjoyed it and have a great year dude.

Love the . . .
. . . "muddy" sound of the guitars. I really like that effect. This sounds very raw and organic, in a really good way! I'd say this borders on psychedelic, in a roundabout way. Cool! :)

Well
It's still classic Paddy indie rock. And great for it. Sounds great on my (admittedly pretty rubbish) speakers.

I really like
those dead-stop, synchopated bits, excellent and the catchy hook.. it's a pity the timing coming out of them is sometimes a bit shakey... I'd stop the song at 04:08 as well. Thanks for sharing.

I especially like the job you did with the vocal arrangement. Tracks have a live feel, which I think the drums really add to. The stops and starts are effective at holding interest. Some nice chord changes.

Cool
This is a well-written song, so I'm glad you took the time to make it as good as it could be (which is really good). You definitely have a unique sound going for you. Thanks for posting.

great sounding track!
really nice guitars and drums, poppy melodies and background vox are great, like the syncopated riff with the slight hint of a bluesy bit at the end...

I grew up in the 70's and 80's in the south of the UK in an Irish family. I had always loved music but was never given an opportunity to explore making it for myself. About 10 years ago I bought an acoustic guitar and began strumming in earnest. To d... [see more]
