Description
This is a recording made on opening night of my Tuesday Evening Concert Series at Acton Jazz Cafe. This jam is Inner City Blues by Marvin Gaye. It is my regular band mates, The Bishop Brothers on bass and drums, augmented by the AJC All-Stars, Laird Nelson on keyboards, and Joe Raia on tenor sax. We had Laird and Joe join us for the first night. These guys are great great players that hang at the Cafe, participate in Jams and such.

I had hoped to make a full 8 track recording of the show, but because of time constraints and a bad mic cable, I only got 3 tracks, 2 ambient room mics, and a mic on my amp.....

This is the music as it was picked up thru the 2 stereo AKG Perception 200’s I have, placed stage left and right. I was able to mix in some of the close mic of my amp, but that was it. There was no soundman, no amps were mic’d, so this is what we got...

Fran Bishop, Drums
Bryan Bishop, Bass
Fran Dagostino, Guitar, Production
Laird Nelson, Hammond B3
Joe Raia, Tenor Sax, Alto Sax

Recorded Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at the Acton Jazz Cafe.

Very nice Fran!
the "Fran Dagostino 3 mic technique" will go down in MJ annals as one of the more successful live recording techniques for sure. The sax is beautifully recorded - and Joe can play a bit too ;) Amazing sound and playing from Laird - again, beautifully recorded. The rest of the FD Band sounding amazing also - your guitar is a treat as always.
This is really an amazing recording Fran!
If I could get to a show I would - in the meantime, how about a CD of some of this stuff?
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

It's the music, not the recording that counts.
This cooks! The recording captured all the players with ambience, and that's all you need. A live club recording isn't spozed to sound like a studio track. Thanks for sharing a great jam. Gotta listen again.

This turned out all right!
For such a simple recording setup, you ended up with a lot of space and air, a big ol' natural stereo spread and very live feel...

Love the B3 and sax....

There's a great vibe to this, Fran... Pretty hot for opening of the Tuesday night series, and pre-blizzard, to boot....

cool jam
I prescribe more of this for your continued mental health and happiness. Ask Joe what kind of mouthpiece and reed he is using. Nice interaction betwixt the players... just wanted to use the word betwixt.

well
betwixt you and me....Joe has a very cool setup...a small wireless mic through a small unit which adds a touch of delay, compression and reverb....it plugs directly into the PA system. He has a beautiful tone, and sounds beautiful live.

More please!
I always enjoy your uploads, Ziti; you are a true pro. It's a real treat to hear the other fine players you jam with too... it sounds like everyone is a very fine musician, and the solos are great. I particularly like the way Joe feeds off your solo, providing subtle commentary, and in fact I kind of wished that would have continued for a lot longer!

Great stuff, Z, and thanks for sharing it with us!

Killer, Zeets. Great jam. You played at your normal high level, your boys were solid, and the guests were fantastic.

Spectacular B3 solo, really nicely done.

Fran
are you hauling over a laptop, audio interface and stuff to get all of this? I have wondered about those little 8 track recorders I see over at guitar center and whether they might work great to capture something like this then later import the tracks into GB or Logic for a little EQ and stuff.

Hey there
My usual set up is my Macbook, an AlesisI/O26 interface and a submixer for the drums. I mic up the whole kit, and submix it to 2 tracks with a Behringer mixer. Then I put either a direct line or mic from the bass, and I mic my amp. That leaves 4 tracks open. I usually have a track JUST for the bass drum, and a track for the snare drum...leaving 2 tracks to deal with how to capture the vocals...that's where the AKGs come in...one on each side of the stage, enough to get what is coming out of the PA system....I have had pretty good luck this way. BUT this night, i only had the 2 room mics, and my guitar amp mic....if the bass amp mic had functioned, i could have mixed the bass to not have so much room reverb, and I think these recordings would be better. But I am so thankful to have captured this night!!

Fantastic live sound Fran. Great playing by all concerned. I am amazed at how well you got this to sound despite your mic cable issues. You guys really cook. Fancy having two Fran's in a band as well :-) My congratulations to all concerned. Take care, Peter.

Kick ass, great calls & responses.
Fran! I'm glad I paid the cover. (The price was right.) The guys gave you a great groove. LOVE LAird's B3 -- and its not a midi one! Your playing always resonates, hits my sweet spot. A great collaborative effort, everyone leaves room for everyone else. Kick ass and smooth at the same time.
