Ding Dong

Description
Slightly explicit. I used the word "bitch" a few times. The censors will probably object.

This is my cover of another Wiz of Oz tune. I upload "Over the Rainbow" which was a jazz interpretation of the classic tune from Wizard of Oz. This is a progressive rock version of another tune from that same film. The only thing in common with the original is the lyrics, which I stayed true to.

Instrumentation:\-
- Hammond B3
- The ToneSToneS vocal quartet.
- 4 tracks of PRS guitar
- Bass
- Tubular Bells
- Glockenspiel
- Moog Synth
- Sampled Choir
- Drums

I've been on a kick lately to using unusual instruments. The Tubular Bells and Glock both qualify.

I've been thinking about using this for my iPhone as a ringtone.

I always liked the way a moog and guitar sound together, especially playing harmony lines.

The Wizard of Oz
This was the first movie that really stuck with me when I was growing up. That flying monkey scene gave me nightmares for years. I loved the movie and the music from it is so easily recognizable I always wanted to do a prog-rock opera of it. I'll post the third (and by far the strangest) from this series soon.

Thanks, Carrie.

Great
Wonderful sound use. Love the harmonies on the vocal parts. Harmony work is really good throughout on the instruments too. I like the runs.. very prog. Cheers!

Thanks, Andrew
I've done this kind of treatment (prog-rock-ified) to a number of classics. I like taking easily recognizable lyrics and writing songs around them that are completely different from the original. I'm glad you like it.

That guitar riff is a wicked bitch. I love the lighter section around 1:00. Wild drum track and the Kansas inspired riffs leading back to the rocking chorus are great. Nice vocals. Production and mix are top notch! Such an interesting and fun listen!

hi steve. yeah...you're evil and should be banned from the site. great mix, and great vocals. bells work perfectly...it does actually have hints of mike oldfield in other places. love the sixties groove departure at 1.50 and beyond....seriously clever construction. this song goes all kinds of places in all kinds of clever and interesting ways. i still can't reconcile the fact that this is a song about the wizard of oz though...have you been smoking something...and can you get me some?

Ding Dong, the ringtone
That is what inspired me to do this in the first place. I thought about having a ring tone with Ding Dong the Witch is Dead. The rest just grew out of the concept.

really amazing Steve
I love how you navigate this through all of these very musical movements in the best traditions of progressive... this is truely masterful... I'd love to be a fly on the wall to see how you work... and just how these ideas get fleshed out... as I'm sure you've noticed... I took a real acoustic turn somewhere along the way...

I have to ask... is the same moog that was in the room so many years ago.... it couldn't be... could it???

Steve,
There's a lot to this production. It mixes a lot of different styles of Rock almost in a kind of rock opera kind of way. Some ELP and Who influences and a lot of other things that could be overlooked if one does not really listen. Very good.

Prunk Rock!
It's pretty funny to see the title "Ding Dong" followed by the explicit tag... made me wonder waht kind fo Ding Dong you were singin' about. Steve, this rocks. Love the arrangement, especially that dirty-sweet guitar complementing your killer keys (which are like Larry Fast with a bad attitude). Lyrics: Very, very entertaining prog-funk. Prunk?

Complexity
Great prog rock tune. You definitely have the idiom nailed.

The mix is a bit thin. Maybe a bit too much cutting in the mid range? Or maybe it's just my monitors.

Never enough green skin
I dig the "where the goblins go" section that moves into that morphing instrumental break. this is one of the best scenes in one of the all time greatest films. I love that you had the courage to rework the whole thing. I can see the video. Maybe how it would've sounded if Yes wrote the music and it came out in 1978, starring a teen age Bette Midler?
