Boy on Fire [Ravens cover; MJCC11]

Get Flash to see this player.

Description
Here's a very different take on Ravens' "Girl on Fire," without the girl. If you missed her version, please give that a listen to see how different it is.

Thanks to Dani for being cool with this, and just being cool. Haste and computer issues forced me to record this very lo-fi: all acoustic guitars and vocals into the internal mic, plus one lonely synth/strings loop. But hey, "I'm just a boy who loves music."

P.S.: This was done for the Cover Challenge.

Lyrics
VERSE 1
Last week, I was cooler than I am now; Then you happened don’t know how.
This week, I am hotter than I’ve been before, don’t think I can take much more
Our first kiss: a near miss Awkwardly, I turned away, didn’t know what I should say
Since then it’s been replaying over in my mind, (I’m) wishin’ I could just rewind

PRECHORUS 1
Never loved the boys I dated
Slow to warm I’m glad I waited
Now my thoughts aren’t so G-rated
I’m a little frustrated

CHORUS
Oooh, I’ve never been a girl on fire! Light me up light me up, yeah I’m ready to burn
Oooh, I’ve never been a girl on fire, but ever since I met you, I think I’m catchin’ on

VERSE 2
I’m so confused I'm all tangled up inside, can't wait till I come untied
Daydream/ Nightmare all my thoughts have turned to you, don’t think that you even care
I can’t sleep, I can’t eat! I can try but it’s no use, can’t seem to un-light this fuse
Tick tock! Time bomb! Infatuation overload, any second I’ll explode

PRECHORUS 2
You can see it in my eyes
My temperature is on the rise
I wish you’d just realize that
I’m so sick of fantasizing

CHORUS 2
Oooh... [etc.]

BRIDGE
Tonight is the night and it feels so right
All it takes is just a spark
and we’ll ignite

OUT CHORUS
Oooh... [etc. to end]
---

shalom dude. where are you? love the guitars. can't you post the lyrics? love the harmonies at 1.24 onwards. internal mic.....impressive. great song bob...lots of atmos and i can totally 'hear' you.
some of the delay went on a bit too much in places for me. cool riffs....and dreamy ahs and oohs.

Much-delayed... but back!
Thanks, Julian. The lyrics are long, so I just left ya to pick 'em up at the RAVENS song page (linked above.) As for the delay, well, I guess that's just an echo of my too-long absence here. (Oh, you mean the digital delays? Well, I'm just a boy...

Men & boys:
Kenta, your "man who like[s] to do music on my Computer" statement is a lot like Raven's "girl who likes music," which I duly ripped-off (along with the song)! Thank you.

Just a boy who loves music...
Smarty pants! Maybe in a perfect world where cupcakes & bears got along, I'd let that slide. However, since girls rule & boys drool, I won't!

Awesome rendition, it's an honor that you chose my song to cover. I like how you totally changed it into a trippy melancholy-ish feeling tune. Great stuff Mr. 6 Stringer, oh and post the lyrics!

Cool pic too, I'm diggin' your B6S bib, very neat!

Dani, Dani, Dani... thank you for the fun, the talent and your OK to have me cover you. Bears vs. cupcakes? I WILL someday make public a musical rendition of The Great Cupcake War to celebrate that crazy little mind-bomb of a concept.

Two addenda: To your ribbing: if boys drool, at least I've got my B6s bib on! And to your request to add the lyrics here: done. Thanks again, talented and wondrous iDiva.

Oxy-clean/dirty:
Downloaded? Honored, in light of your own CLEAN acoustic work. And to think I used my D-28 on this... isn't that just a waste of tone?! As for the unfaithful cover, it just occurred to me what a great oxymoron this is: "original cover." Thanks, Bob.

Shy, but working on it.
Thanks, Dave. I did a slew of mixes with vocals ranging from no reverb, flange/chorus or echo/delay to way too much. I kind of settled on these levels for the "trippy" mood, but there's a chance I'm still a little shy and hiding my voice. I'll keep your comments in mind as I go.

Interesting instrumentation and mix and a fine entry into the MJCC.

Faithful, in a way.
Thanks, big brother! I never really approached this thinking how I wanted it to feel, and it came out this way. The guitar really dictated the groove and vibe. The song itself has some really interesting chords and harmonic things going on, and believe it or not I remained almost completely faithful there.

Distortion adds back-half kick
Thanks Mr. A! Great bones on this tune, aren't there? I might have to ape the structure in an original sometime... or sing like Dani! To your comment about the added kick at 3:30 or so: I buried a distorted harmonic blast under the word "ignite" followed by some also-fuzzy leads through the end... glad you liked it. Thank you sincerely. (I'll have to get back to something electric and heavy for you soon.)

Thank you, your fi-ness!
Thanks, Mark, I always shoot for "different" in hopes people won't say "all that guy's stuff sounds the same." Glad you liked it.

Cover
Man, this bed of guitars is so sweet. The little scale runs here and there are a gem. Your vocals are so expressive man, and your voice tone is great.
I love the lo-fi audio and how you worked around those computer issues getting something wonderfully different.

Billy, I could swear I responded to your comment earlier, but anyway, thanks for stopping by. I appreciate the little endorphin kick your comments give me.

Fire
Wow, the very first thing I thought in the opening measures of this cover was, "Crash Test Dummies", and I LOVED the Crash Test Dummies back in the early 90s! (Still do). Boy, you are right . . . that is a very different take on Ravens' song . . . cool as heck. A totally different emotion--plaintive and lonely in that delicious way. Love the vocal layering at 3:15. Awesome.

Layering it on thick...
Thank you! About the vocal layering, my favorite little piece of it is at around 3:50 ... I laugh at it when I hear it, thinking that high 2nd voice is like my little bit of Radiohead aping.

Belated thanks. I've been bogged down with little details lately (like trying to pay the rent) but I'll be back to catch up with you soon.

A very interesting and enjoyable record, love the changes of mood in this and the vocal sound. Great sound on the guitar as well. Reminds me of Roy Harper here I think.

Long Live Roy Harper!
Funny you should mention Roy Harper, John... ever since I jettisoned my vinyl, I've looked and looked and failed to find Roy's album, "When an Old Cricketer Leaves the Crease." Thanks for the listen and praise.

Writing, playing, jamming, arranging, recording. Those are my priorities...recording's last, partly because I prefer a live drummer to collaborate with (preferably in real time) vs. drum loops or midi (which I won't use). I'm still a teenager, creat... [see more]
