Description
A couple of months ago I was looking through Public Domain songs to find a possible duet with michaeljklein and noticed this song on the list. I asked him about singing on it- he basically said after Ray Charles did it what's the point, which makes total sense. Kind of like asking a guitarist to do a cover of "Purple Haze". There are some great guitar versions also but not as well known so here is mine. Just don't compare it to Ray Charles!

Purple Georgian Haze on the Water
Well, I'm disappointed; I was looking forward to hearing Purple Haze, or (more ideally), Smoke on the Troubled Waters, but instead, you give me Georgia, and not The Devil Went Down to it, either, just plain Georgia.

That said, I got over my disappointment pretty darn quick when I actually heard what you do with the tune... As you always do, you play with exquisite taste and skill, so much so that if Joe Pass were still around I'm pretty sure he'd want to sell all his instruments, as there would be no point competing with you.

I particularly like the beautiful intro, and they way you go into double time on the second time through the form. I could listen to your stuff all day.

Just curious: Do you use a click track? Your time is remarkably locked in!

Thanks Clark
I've heard Joe pass play this- I'm not close to that, maybe a few more decades.I'm not using a click track, just my foot. Check out Ben Verdery- he does a nice version of Purple Haze on classical guitar.

Some very nice playing Mark,
but of course this is one of my favorite songs. It's hard to do this song wrong, but there's no danger of that the way you played it. I like the change ups in rhythm you used.

Very nice !

Iconic song
Hi Mark. Fine interpretation of an iconic song. Smooth playing and nice change ups. Really enjoyed. My only passing comment would be that I would have liked there to be a touch less reverb and and bit more fatness in the sound. I am guessing you were looking for a tone in your mind, so who am I to know better. Thanks for the posting. Take care, Peter.

I like the way...
...you use your extra digits to form the add-17 chords there...

And your subtle use of the mixopodgordian scale in its doreminian mode is sublime....

A lesser player would've had a hard time making the quotes from 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' in the outro fit the bolero movement from which they briefly emerge, but I think you manage it well...

But I still think this is all for nought until you make a video...

Awfully good, Mark. You might want to consider getting ride of that pesky taste of yours. It might be getting in your way....
Moviz said 2377 days ago (February 12th, 2011)

I like the way you break it up around 2:20 or so. And then towards the end with the double thumbing. Nice shifts.

One of my favorite tunes...so nicely arranged and played. Thanks.

Classy
Played with your characteristic style and class. Very mellow, very enjoyable rendition of this wonderful classic. There can never be enough interpretations of this great song, and yours is particularly unique. How you manage all those chords is beyond my understanding. But you do it with grace and precision. The guitar in your hands is like melting butter: just soft enough to spread, but with form and integrity. Bravo.
