A Break in the Clouds

Description
This is more a mood piece than anything.

Here's the setting: I'm driving into work on a cold, rainy miserable Monday morning after a long, cold, miserable weekend a few weeks ago. Not in a bad mood, but the dreariness has got me down a bit. Then, as I top a hill, there's a small hole in the clouds that lets through one tremendously bright patch of sunlight shining right into my face. It lasted maybe 10 seconds and then it was gone, but it was enough to change my mood for the entire day.

The first thing I did when I got to work is write down how those few seconds made me feel. I fleshed it out and came up with the lyrics.

I had originally intended to do a tune completely different from what I came up with. This just sort of evolved organically one afternoon. At some point, I may go back any try and do it the way I originally intnded, but it will have to sit for a while before I can do that.

There's lots of thick, rich vocals and harmonies. They aren't perfect. My never-ending cold this year has wrought havoc on my voice, but I think it still works.

It's fairly short, just over two and a half minutes, and I had intended for it to be shorter, but it didn't turn out that way. Still, take a listen and I hope you enjoy.

Lyrics
A Break in the Couds
©2011 Joseph Gurner

Morning
And the rain falls
From clouds
Gathered overhead

Dreaming
Of a time long ago
When the world
Was filled with sun

I see
In the puddles on the sidewalk
The troubles of the world
Around me

Every drop that falls
From the swollen sky above
Like a tear
Falling to the sea

Then there’s a break in the clouds
And the sun shines down
On me

You're welcome
I definitely love knowing someone enjoys one of my tunes enough to want to take it home with them. As I worked on this, more and more I heard it as being possibly an introductory piece to a larger work. Now I just have to figure out what that might be. Definitely a thought.

Thanks for listening Karen. I always appreciate your support!

A Break in the Clouds
The vocal harmonies set to the synth drone recalls a lot of Yes songs. Daring and well done!

Definitely a little Yes sprinkled in. It really gets fun playing with lots of vocal layers.

Glad you dropped in and took a listen. Thanks!

The 10 second sun tan
Thanks, Eduard. This is definitely the kind of thing I enjoy, a piece that you can point to an exact moment in time and an event as an inspiration. Especially when it's a positive one.

Glad you enjoyed the tune. Thanks, a s always, for taking the time to listen.

Time is Relative
It's funny when you think about all the time you put into a two and a half minute song. Maybe two minutes of vocals, times sixteen, plus recording vocals over and over and over until you get them right, plus the other instruments, the mixing. But, the time really flies by while working and, when you get the result, it's always worth it.

Glad you enjoyed the tune. Thanks for stopping by.

Thank you, my friend
A former band mate of mine said he heard some Harrison in it as well. So that's half way to a Beatles reunion...

Glad you enjoyed it! The next one, how about I get you to throw in some vocals as well? :)

Droning on and on...
A couple of folks have mentioned the drone and I realized I have a number of tunes like that and I've never really realized it. Must be something about it I really like.

Appreciate you taking the time to give it a listen.

A Break in the Clouds
Joyful. Thought this might be a great track to start the CD :-) One of those palette cleansing tunes where you find yourself (the listener) in a completely different place from where you started. Reminded me a little of David Gilmour - in the vocal phrasing.

Heh!
It's funny you mentioned Gilmour. A little bit of the melody was actually lifted from a song I wrote back in the college days which, after I worked and worked on it, I realized it had morphed into Us and Them almost note for note with just a slightly different melody. Now I'm glad that at least a tiny portion of that tune lives on in this one.

And now that I think about that, I need to dig out those old lyrics and see if I can do something with them. They weren't half bad...

Thanks for stopping by and taking a listen. Glad you enjoyed it.

Story time
Glad you enjoyed the story behind it as well as the tune. It always amazes me where different songs come from for different people. It just shows that inspiration can be everywhere.

Thanks much!

Excellent stuff Joe!
I don't hear any imperfections in the vocals at all. I half expected that Yes might break in at the end into something like "Yours is no Disgrace".
This is definitely my favourite of yours so far - I do have a nit though - and I had to wait until the last second of the song to find it. I wish you'd let the bounce run a second or two longer to get the fade of the reverb on the vocals.
Apart from that tiny glitch, I am incredibly impressed.
Cheers from Oz,
Neil

Thanks Neil!
It's kind of weird to think when I started recording and posting here at MJ, I was very apprehensive about my vocals and tried to bury them way down in the mix. I would have never even imagined I would do something like this. And I owe you much thanks for all of your support and encouragement throughout the years, especially where my vocals are concerned.

And I totally agree agree with your nitpick. I'm not sure if it was the bounce or if I just cut everything off too early. I'll have to see.

Thanks much for listening and I'm glad you enjoyed the tune. And thanks for all your support over the years!

Heaven and hell
Hi Joseph. Are you sure the big fella didn't peak out through this gap in the clouds and just wave at you a little? Whatever you saw it sure brought out your symphonic side. Definite Yes vibe in parts (compliment). There is a hell (sic) of a lot packed into 2 and a half minutes. In awe. Regards, Peter

Shine On
I think if anyone were taking a peek at me, the light would have come from below, not above. :)

I've always loved a big, flowing wall of sound. Sometimes it comes out as six or seven guitar parts all meshed together. Sometimes it a dozen or so voices. But it definitely goes back to all my days of sitting back in the French horn section and adding what I could to the big, beautiful sound we were all working to make.

I really appreciate your comment, Peter, and I'm glad you took the time to stop by and listen.

Beatles Basics
The first band I was in in college, the other two members were huge Beatles fans and we did a lot of their stuff. The three of us singing all the harmonies did a lot to shape what I do today. And man, it was always fun doing it.

Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks for dropping in!

Because....the world is round....
....I can hear a neat blend of Beatles and Brian Wilson on this one, which is not a bad place to be coming from....
jgurner said 2414 days ago (February 10th, 2011)
Hmmm...
I thought the world was flat. Might have to rethink some things...

The Ooohs at the end were a very deliberate nod to a little Beach Boys sound, which is always nice.

'Preciate it Ed!

Sunny day
The photo, while not of the day in question, is actually quite appropriate for the tune. It was taken last winter on the first half decent day after a long stretch of miserable weather. It was the first day in many weeks we were able to go out to one of my favorite spots for a walk. The clouds began to break and the sun blazed out from behind them.

Glad you enjoyed the tune. I always appreciate you taking the time to listen and comment!
