drum driven thing

Description
this is based around a drum pattern in 5/4 time. the drum midi code is used to fire a bass synth to provide the rhythm track. i then added guitar chords and lead. the violin is a virtual instrument played on the guitar using a guitar to midi converter in real time.

i wish i could play the drums
i used to sing and play guitar in a local covers band. i'll never forget the feeling of the band pulling together behind me, driven by a good drummer. today i try to be experimental in my recorded work and usually start from a good drum track.

Drum driven
This is the kinda stuff I like. Driving bass underneath a drum pattern that keeps you a little off balance, peppered with some krazy guitar ... and violin. There's also interesting stuff off in the background just out of reach. It all mixes to make a stew of otherworldly goodness. Really slick.

driving bass
i first tried using the midi piano roll for the drum pattern to fire a bass synth to see what it would sound like. frankly i was astounded at how powerful it was.

there was a band in the '70's called string driven thing, whose featured lead instrument was an electric violin.

Whatever you did...
...I like it. the rhythm is complex and interesting, and the overlays are just right, not overbearing. It has kind of a Mahavishnu Orchestra feel. Thanks for posting.

The drums are very full and cool - sort of in your face cool. the whole song moves along at aa fairly quick pace, and you do some interesting stuff with the guitar and "violin". This made for an unique listening experience, although I do think you could develop the concept a bit more by adding some chordal variation. Nonetheless an enjoyable listening experience - thanks!

chordal variation
that's a helpful suggestion. i'd just need to edit and transpose the midi file for the bassline. would set myself more of a challenge in the soloing too.

great bass
This really drives along! Love the bubbling insistent bassline. How did you programme the drums? Must have taken forever!! Great, reminded me a bit of Steve Hillage in his Green phase.

drum programming
was done using a set of loops from groovemonkees.com in ezdrummer lite (both free!). ezdrummer adjusts the bpm and you just drag n drop the loops into position.

5/4
Last time i came across a song in 5/4 time was Jethro Tull's "Living in the Past'. Reached the Top 20 in the UK in the Seventies and apparently it was very amusing watching people trying to dance to it!

Enjoyed this one, too.

is also in 5/4, i believe. my wife and i were once in the piano bar of a very posh french hotel and we asked the pianist to play take 5. he said "i can play it if you can dance to it". france 1 england nil.

Well,
I can tap my foot to it but I don't think the dance would look too good. Wild. The violin is terrific. Thanks.

Driven
Very cool vibe you have going on here with lots of forward action and detail, and I love the 5/4 timing (you could use this as part of the musical cues in an upcoming Mission Impossible which has the same time signature as the original theme). Dloaded.

Let the drums do the driving
Tasty percussion. Really deep bass. Ghostly string pads. I like it. Very cool.
