2trx2011 - Down By The River

Description
I had originally recorded a new song for the 2-track Challenge and was planning on guitar/vocal on one track and harmonies on the other, but recording the guitar was fiddly and I ended up needing one track for the guitar and one for the lead vocals. I am quite happy with the song as is but it will be far better with some harmonies and a bit of fleshing out so... I decided to record an instrumental piece that I composed that I often play around with. Track one is a finger-picked rhythm track and track 2 is acoustic lead over the top. Anyway, as always, see what you think. Warm regards, Peter.

Entrancing
This was so beautifully refreshing and that little motif in a different key really struck me--it reminds me a little bit of the theme song from "The Wrong Man", an Alfred Hitchcock film scored by Bernard Herrmann--it is so penetrating and such an unexpected contrast in this piece. This is ready to roll! Thanks for doing such fine work Peter--it's a joy to listen to your music. Take good care now and have a very good week! Michael

The guitar is the star...
Hi Stan. Thanks for your kind words. Not so much practice as just noodling around :-) The facts that the notes are clear is due to the guitar. It is a guitar I hand-made from scratch at a luthier school here in Melbourne, Australia. It uses Australian tone woods and is light and very resonant. Great fun to play. Welcome to MJ. I will drop by your posts shortly. Regards, Peter.

Superb
As someone who can sit for hours just "noodling" on his guitar I can well imagine how a tune like this gradually builds up as little phrases get joined together into one big whole. A really lovely piece that I can imagine you play quite often just for the pleasure of playing. Cheers Mark

Vigorous stream
Hi Peter,

The river sounds youthful, and bubbling over shallows, tumbling at times over rocks, like a mountain valley?

Wonderful how you make the two guitars compliment each other so brilliantly. Can't remember a single moment when they were opposed.

Great stuff. Thanks.

Rhythm and solo
Very nice piece overall.

In a couple of places (notably 0:30) the lead seems to be hitting the same notes as the rhythm. And in general, the lead and rhythm play (too) often the same 3+3+2 rhythm. Sorry, pet peeve of mine: if there's much duplication I think " we have two parts if they play the same". I like independence between parts.

Otherwise nothing but praise for your guitar playing.

A really nice "setting" number...
I think you capture the laid-back atmosphere of your photo and idea very well. I really like the main tune that you start with and then reprise about 1/2 through in its entirely. Your touch is very smooth and the finger vibrato is just classy all the way. While I like the higher register meandering about a minute in, the middle register sounds the fullest and most secure in my ears... This was such an enjoyable little mood piece that you played with great style.

A trained musician!
Hi Paul, Thanks so much for finding time to have a listen to this instrumental. I appreciate your detailed comments. You obviously listen with a trained musician's ear. I am more of your doodle and see what works kind of guy :-) I hadn't really thought of a name for the piece until I had to post it and the concept of a river flowing (occasionally over rocks) came to me in the end. I am happy with that imagery. Glad you enjoyed it. Warm regards, Peter.

hi peter...love the riff...definitely my kind of sound. you're really getting the hang of the production side. the piece itself is really reminiscent of theme music to seventies tv progs...and i mean that as a compliment...because i am a big nostalgia fan. this is a great track. deep bows.

Just a 70's boy
Hi Julian. Thanks for your kind comments. Yep, the 70's, that's me to a tee :-) I think I am getting the hang of recording the guitar I made and best capturing its tonal qualities. It is a buzz to play a piece you wrote on a guitar you made from scratch. Take care, Peter.

Avatar...
Hi Stephen. Thanks for dropping by. Yes, my avatar is of the hand-made guitar. You were talking about the yet to be completed finish in your video. Chris Wynn only uses Danish Oil - nothing else. I brings out the grain of the woods so beautifully and leaves the guitar very resonant. Very easy to apply as well. Glad you enjoyed your course. I did as well. It was a career highlight. Take care, Peter.

Peter
You are not the first one to recommend an oil finish. I will have to consider it for a few reasons. 1) I have used it on furniture and so I am familiar with its application. 2) At least three professional Luthiers use it (Chris Wynn, Robbie O'Brian, Jonathan Kinkead). 3) Two MJers recommend it (You and Elevator Funk). 4) The ease of use for an amateur with limited skill and resources.

Its so great to know there are others at MJ who are into this.
My regards,
Stephen

Thanks for the heads up
Thanks again, David. I didn't know about Norman Blake but I chased him up on Youtube. He has a wonderfully understated flat pick style. I like it. I have quite a few Dave Bromberg and Dan Crary records/CDs that I listen to on rotation. I don't use a pick. I can't keep hold of the thing. I just started finger style and all my work, including all my electric lead work, is done with my fingers. My latest song has some nice acoustic work on it (IMHO) :-) Kind regards, Peter.
