Description
This is a redone version of my song "Going Down," with lyrical changes and with some of the music rethought. I haven't been spending as much time on music as I'd like, but I'm working on a cycle of poetry that ties into the set of songs I've been writing, and I've got a fair amount of unrelated work as well. When I'm done with the songs and poetry sequence, I might consider making them available as a group -- I haven't decided either way yet. All that said, I hope you enjoy my re-interpretation, as it were. Cheers!

I dig the mood here
and your vocals!
I think there's a bit too much reverb on the guitar
Enjoyed!

I like the guitar part a lot! KC may be right about a bit less reverb. But then again it does give it that dark from the past eerie blues edge. I think the guitar is slightly out of tune but again, there are tons of classic blues recordings where accurate tuning didn't distract from the music. Nice harmonica playing. One of your best vocals yet!

I agree with KC. Too much reverb on the guitar. Nice bluesy vocals. Good job. Some slide guitar (in addition to the harmonica) would be tasty.

Hi Ben. Pretty intense stuff. You have generated a unique atmosphere here. The harmonica seems to jump right out of my headphones. Probably agree with others re the reverb on the guitar. Thanks for the post. Regards, Peter.

Very cool
I do believe this is my favorite of yours.

Killer playing. Cool vocals and lyrics.
The harmonica part fits very nicely.
You've also progressed in your mixing.
I'll bet if you backed off the reverbe on the guitar it would sound pretty spot on.

Very cool.

I look forward to hearing your next one.

Not crazy about the guitar sound,
but I can hear that it works towards a sound that you're after. Great vocal and harp tracks. This is reminiscent of an Australian player/singer, Jeff Lang who I'm going to see on the weekend http://www.jefflang.com.au/ Good post!

I like the picked descending phrase. Harmonica fills are cool, vocals sound pretty good. Some good images in the lyric.

Hey dude, I like the piece kind of a country thing going down, the harp is great, I'm not fond of the effect on the guitar I think you play well enough to just let the guitar speak for itself. Nice job

You are
a great songwriter. I enjoyed this one Ben. I think if you backed off the delay or reverb you have on the guitar just a touch it would bring it up in the mix. Matching the vocals to the Harmonica's delay or reverb would give it a more even feel. The dry vocal almost sounds like an afterthought because it is dry. Great song and equally great performance.
Peace

Great lyrics and delivery. has an off-kilter timing feeling that some of Chris Whitley's acoustic numbers have. Have to agree with the others on the amount of reverb on the guitar - it just creates too much of a disparity between the space the singer "lives in" and the instrumentation, like one is in one room and the other is 30 feet down the hall. Good post. Thanks!

fisrt post of yours i've heard and i like - little much reverbage on the guitarr - cool swampy vibe and the raw bluesy harmonica work really pull it along nicely - much enjoyed

Hey Ben
I've nothing new to say that the others haven't re the guitar echo ... a bit heavy for my tastes but kinda works, great harp playing, other than that I love this track. I'd say your best vocal to date. Ace stuff man. Always look forward to hearing your music.

Blues...
Just read your bio and great to see that you are moving in the right direction with your music. The interest is there and so is the talent. That's an awesome combination to start with. The guitar is too much reverbed. The harmonica adds a bluesy flavor to it. The voice has a great tone and has the right mood that goes with the music.

hello all
I've been really busy lately, and haven't had the time to reply to all of these excellent comments, but I HAVE taken them into account, and I am very grateful for them. I've just churned out another mix of this with the reverb toned down, though I needed to triple up the guitar tracks to achieve the effect I was looking for. Cheers!

Catching up
I think your voice tonally is as good or better than I have heard you. I agree with the comments about the reverb on the acoustic. Your free form vocal style (which I like) sounds like it is off tempo at times. i know what effect you were going for but sometimes the lyric must be sacrificed at the alter of meter. Good work!

I haven't been playing music for too long. I've dabbled with the guitar for years, but it was only late in 2009 when I started writing my own stuff, and I've loved it ever since. I had always been inventing riffs or short melodies on the guitar, but ... [see more]
