Song for Children

Get Flash to see this player.

A 'cycle of life' song' written after reading Richard Adams' book Watership Down - a book in which the main characters are rabbits, which explains the fields and flowers references. It's not really a children's song, despite the title.

The artwork is a photo taken on the road from Wonthaggi to Loch in Victoria, Australia - saw the double rainbow, stopped the car and snapped the photo.

Song for Children

Gather round children I’ll sing you a song
Of birds and the leaves and the land
It tells of the flowers and songs that they sing
And how they can lend you a hand
And all of the leaves are a lesson you’re learning
And what you are seeing is what I’ve been sowing they’ve grown.

Children your laughter will give you your daydreams
Facing what ever you find
Playing your games that you played in the meadow
Asking the trees if they mind
Seeing the living that runs all around you
Hurting no-one cause they never hurt you - you have grown

Children your faces will live in tomorrow
You’ll step outside of today
You’ll question the answers and answer the questions
Of those who have all had their say
You’ll see the sunshine come into the meadow
And over the fields you will lead us and take us away.

Then when you’re tired as I’m feeling now
And children are playing your games
You’ll see a friend who will tell you he knows you
He’s watched you and helped you to change
And now he will show you there’s hope and he’ll lead you
Out of your body and over the meadow
To children and laughter and songs we can sing now we’re free.

Hey there Philip! I'm Andrew I'm a 1st grade teacher in Florida. Welcome to MacJams. I got into GarageBand a few years ago. I've found it to be life changing, both in my role as an educator and musician.

Great post! I love the delicate guitar playing. It matches your wonderful vocals perfectly. Very nice production and mix!

Thanks for the comments - much appreciated. I think I could become addicted to Garageband - certainly beats the old four track tape recorder that now sits unused!

Excellent first MJ post!
Hi Philip. Welcome to MJ :-) Excellent first up post! Your relaxed vocals, the delicate guitar work and the lyric imagery call to mind Gordon Lightfoot. The mix/master is also good quality. Congratulations. Regards, Peter.

Thanks for the comment. As a matter of fact, I've been listening to a bit of Steve Forbert (and Jesse Winchester) recently - maybe his tone has rubbed off on me!

Much appreciated - and I haven't been compared to Kenny Rogers that I know of, but am very pleased that you think I might be in his league! I better ring Dolly Parton and see if she wants to do another collaboration track like "Islands in the Stream" :-)

I appreciate the positive comments, Feter. I guess on this site you'd expect people to feel something for the lyrics, and I'm glad I was able to get that across in the singing.
