Smackdown 3 w/awigze & scofugate

Description
In April 2009, I posted the piano solo Classical Smackdown. Later that year I orchestrated it, resulting in Symphonic Smackdown. That is still the most fun I’ve had with an orchestration to date (which is saying quite a bit!). Back then, Andy was fast becoming a phenom at MJ for his sax playing prowess and mega multi-genre collab work. Meanwhile Scott had just joined MJ and was making his own large mark as a super-skilled and extremely versatile drummer. Since then I’ve become great friends with both of these guys and have been regularly awestruck at the incredible music they each make.

Enter my long-held fantasy of getting a REAL drummer to go to town on “Smackdown” and a REAL sax wiz to let loose in the boogie parts of the song. I floated the idea with Scott a few months ago, and sent him an AIF of the song, minus midi drum kits (although ultimately I added some orchestral percussion and timpani back in). I also cleared out a space between the two boogie sections and asked if he would try a drum solo there...."You know, like Gene Krupa in 'Sing, Sing, Sing'"!! (Talk about throwing down the gauntlet!) Shortly thereafter, his schedule got very busy and I really thought for a variety of reasons the project just wasn’t going to happen.

Then a couple of weeks ago I unexpectedly got this note from him that said “check the dropbox”! I pulled his file into the song and nearly fainted. I immediately contacted Andy to see if he’d be interested in throwing in with my now rapidly manifesting fantasy. And just a few days later, he sent me back a fabulous sax track! Suddenly I had everything I needed to put it all together. I did some extensive rewriting of various midi instruments to make it all work with these new tracks, and succumbed as usual to OCTD (obsessive compulsive tweak disorder) which of course means I was having WAY too much fun.

After sending my WIP’s back and forth to Andy and Scott a few times and taking in their mixing feedback, I finally got a version everybody could sign off on – WHEW! What a total blast to work with these stellar guys! THANK YOU Scott and Andy for the fun ride! I hope you enjoy Smackdown 3!

Scott - Ludwig Classic Maple drum kit; komplete6 snare
Andy - Cannonball tenor sax
Karen - everything else

**** song photo circa 1966, after a fall saturday spent raking leaves back in CT. when the work was done, my sibs and i got to leap into the gigantic leaf pile. that's my brother, about age 11. or at least, it's his arm. i thought the "3" was especially appropriate!

Ok
My mission here is complete. I can now die a happy musician. I can now say I collaborated with The Tone. Boogie on sister. Not sure if the word, grunt is the proper musical term. We should poll the audience.

Oh Good Lord
This is freakin' AMAZING! Now, I don't normally use words like amazing, but holy macaroni this is just stellar! Karen, you couldn't have chosen two better musicians to accompany you. You know how much of a fan I am of yours, good lord lady you are terrific!

The 2:00 minute mark when Andy breaks into his solo, oh man that was so awesome! Andy, you are just killer on that sax, unreal man!

Then at the 2:30 mark when Scott Cannoli busts out his drum solo, whew blew me away! Scott, you are truly brilliant. Do I have to start calling you Mr. Grunty? hehe...

Standing ovation here, seriously this is one fantastical piece. Cannolis on me! Karen, your "oh yeah" was so cute!

Just awesome
Karen, this is amazing. Can't beat a bit of boogie and this is certainly up there with the best, if not on top of the heap. I've had the good fortune to work with Scott before and he is a real pleasure as well as a fantastic talent, but that drum solo .. well... damn! The sax playing is equally sublime and has those little light and dark shades somehow even when going at full tilt! The keys... well, they're ok I suppose. Nah, just kidding, cracking boogie that gets you moving and drives the whole thing. I don;t know how you play so fast yet so well. Loved it. More please, more!

To heck with KSA, bring it ALL ON!
About a minute into this, after reading the description, I was anticipating what might be coming, and started actually WANTING to hear the whole Kitchen Sink thrown in here... does this mean all those KSA meetings were a waste?

Absolutely phenomenal re-do of this classic (hey, you have "classics" now!)... great work re-scoring to leave spots for Scott and Andy, and boy do they elbow their way in and make themselves known... great drum and sax work... which give your music unstoppable smirky bounciness! There was one spot in there that thought it might have been a little too busy, but the rest of my mind was having so much fun listening it wrestled that thought to the ground, and now I don't remember where it was.
ttfn,
Drakonis

There is a reason...
...why you get 1,000+ hits on this song in every single iteration: It is simply a stellar number in every single way. The new additions just take it up one more notch (or two, ahem)...and I didn't even realize there WERE more notches. This is just so spectacular, Karen (and company). Every version of this brings a smile to my face, and this one nearly has me dancing around the room (you don't EVER want to see that). Congratulations.

Smack 'em down
Maybe next you could do Boogie Smackdown. Your classical side should get a chance to win one. Then the tie-breaker, the drama building. Well, the collaboration gelled very nicely. Love the sax and drums additions, and the vocal effects hahaha. You must have had lessons. Sounds like you know what you're doing. Nice combination of virtuosity and fun. Hard to come by.

Boogie blast..
Hi Karen. Being only a relatively recent MJ member I haven't had a chance to listen to the previous iterations of this piece but if this version is anything to go by, I must do some back listening. The relaxed opening lulls you into a false sense of security but gives way to a full on boogie blast. Scott and Andy do a great job and your instrumentation is fantastic. Congratulations to all. Warm regards, Peter.

I am simply amazed
at the breadth of this composition. The playing is flawless, the mix and production so dynamic and the arrangement and composing is just a breathless whirl. Congratulations. I love the photo too - born in '66!

just breathtaking
beautiful playing, so elegant and controlled. Love the transition to a more contemporary style.

That was great! I feel really bad about taking so long to finally hear this (things are still pretty crazy with my schedule) Andy and Scott really did a fantastic job adding to this, too!

I finally catch up....
The trouble with versions of things from really good musicians is, you say, "This is really good" on the first one, and then you say, "Well, the first one was good, and this new one has some cool new bits" and then eventually you have to say something like, "This sounds way cool, even though there wasn't anything missing that I would have ever spotted in the earlier versions..."

There IS a lovely bit of riotous neo-New Orleans when that sax kicks in, though, and the blend of sax and drums into the tracks is really nice....

Oh, this is a delight!!
Wow, melodically complex, utterly logical, inspirational, I felt a palpable sense of pride listening; not only from the regal material, but from your obvious affection for the composition, and your collaborators. A truly wonderful piece!! You should see the smile tattooed on my face!

Holy crap
I like to read all the comments before writing mine but reading them all would be like reading the Lord of the Rings trilogy! Much deserved for such stellar performances.
I liked it all, but here are the highlights: the switch to boogie mode, those runs through the piano, the drum solo, the grunts during the drum solo, the contagious fun, and your voice!!!

This is really a unique piece

First off, this could slide right into the Grease soundtrack and be right at home. Really versatile and multifaceted piece here. Beautifully fused with each of you bringing something unique to the equation. Love the tom solo part scott does, love the oldies inspired sax parts from Andy too. Really cool piece here. I think it is your best piece to date Karen, very impressive. DL no brainer here.

Fantastic.
If I'd paid more attention during my survey of American music class I'd be able to say clever things about mid 20th century composers that this reminds me of but I spent most of the time arguing with the teacher about Funkadelic.
Anyway, I like it.
