Lyrics
Faded Butterfly

These timbers by design
Are built to withstand the force
Of natures surplus tides
How could we know of course
That the strain would prove too much
The trembling below
Would take 5000 lives or more
I found among the ruins
The body of a child
A face that I had known
A baby that once smiled
And In his hand a plastic toy
A faded butterfly
The memories that remain
Will never die
While on the other side
The tyrant casts them down
And smiles while others cry
It makes no sense to fly
Into the flames of war
When suffering is nigh
His effigy will crumble
To the ground
Out on the oceans wide
A star fell from the sky
It landed on the shores
And everyone walked by
They did not see the words
Written in the stone
'The leaders of our world compromised'
These timbers by design
Are built to withstand the force
Of natures surplus tides
How can we know of course
That the strain could prove too much
The shaking far below
Could take 5000 lives or more

Very sobering message here, Rich
I had to throw in a moment of silence after the ending. Very well written lyrics and your voice sounds really nice on this. The keys grabbed me and kept me. Loved it all. Terry

If they had more eulogies and psalms like this in church I probably would have gone more. Speaking truth to beauty. Your voice is so poignant and masterful on this Richard. Love the simplicity and singleness of purpose. Real restraint and real results. Really lovely.

Affirmative Funeral
The sustained chords are melancholy, but there is power in them, a potency which one has to find a meaning for in the poignant, tragic lyrics.

It reminds me of an accompaniment to a church hymn, almost, some of the most affirmative and positive songs there are.

Nice mix, and much enjoyed.

Oh so beautiful!
As someone wrote; "i don't know if i've ever heard you do a song quite like this"

I so agree, but this is also one of the points with paddleric music, it is always new, it is inventive, it is beautiful composition, it is great imagination, it brings me as a listener someotherwhere, to a beautiful place, a place to fill my batteries, a place to rest, and have peace. I love this.

Thank you Richard, this was so Rich!

Is this about both the earthquake/tsunami in Japan and the situation in Libya? Pretty melody, and well-sung. The single organ accompaniment makes it feel like church.

Holy moley, what a wonderful tune. The organ is stunning, the lyrics and the vocal make this a true experience. Not usually my thing this but to be taken out of my comfort zone and enjoy something this much is a true credit. Well done

Memorable...
Hi Rich. Sobering but memorable song! Your rich (no pun intended) vocals do great justice to the fine lyrics you have put together. The sparse instrumentation reinforces the seriousness of the message. Congratulations! Warm regards, Peter.

This is really wonderful.

I was going to say "Very anthemic!" But I discovered that "anthemic" is just a made up word. I guess what I'm trying to say is that this is very bold and robust.

Nicely done!

Hymn- like
and very moving in the truth of the excellent poetry as well as your performance..... the organ was a wonderful choice of instrument for this wonderfully thought out and insightful observation and description. A lovely tribute to those who suffered so undeservedly.... as was said..... a real Gem, regards M

truly excellent creation rich. i really liked the way the fourth and fifth lines of each were connected; it made each verse move forward and maintained interest all along.....even though the song was simple. that was really cool. I really liked your 'raw' vocal delivery - it totally went along with the style of the song and the words you were singing.
it's certainly true - you never know what the paddler is going to do next....but i'm glad he came out with a gem like this.

At first I thought what a sad song, but I realize this is more of a tribute to those fallen. Your music gives us the chance to reflect on what we have, as well as on what so many others have lost. Well done, Rich.

Wow, this is a great song. It makes one think while listening about anything that has been happening the last few days and weeks ... the whole world being shaken and somehow perturbed. I can feel the message of humility and letting go from the lyrics. Really a moving and thoughtful piece.

Take care

Great heart to this, Richard...
Reminds me of some of that declamatory folk like Ewan MacColl used to do...

Perfectly written lyrics, and a very moving vocal... The long, slow organ chords just work...
Ed Hannifin said 2295 days ago (April 10th, 2011)
I kept thinking that this reminded me...
...of something, and it finally came to me...John Cale.... You've got a very John Cale feel in this vocal, and that's part of what I love about it...

Poetic
The lyrics read more like a poem than a song they are so rich in powerful imagery and so succinct. The slow speed of the melody reinforces that power. Your vocal, sung low, adds to the sense of an important, almost religious, experience. Congratulations!
